TOPSoccer

The P/OB Annual TOPSoccer Tournament and Barbecue was delayed one day due to the rain on Saturday, but it did not dampen the spirits of the players. The enthusiasm was sky-high as NHP combined with Rockville Centre for an awesome intermediate juggernaut. The team's overall play is greatly improved, as demonstrated in today's event. The offense was rocking with excellent dribbling and shooting from Stefani Egre and Matt Saraiva. Alex Warner and Carlos Hernandez were the stars at midfield with great tackles and outstanding passes. Sebastian Garcia has grown immensely in goal with super saves and quick outlets passes to generate a potent attack. Andrew Abberton played a smart game at sweeper with uncanny anticipation of the opposing forwards. After stripping the ball from them, he deftly dribbled down the sideline and sent countless passes to his forwards which created many scoring chances. However, the highlight of the game, and perhaps the season, was a goal off a corner kick which had everyone stunned with it's perfect execution. Carlos Hernandez took the corner kick from the right side and sent a beautiful pass to the center of the field. Even though he was covered by 2 defenders, Matt Saraiva was able to send a one-time blast past the frozen goalie. It was as good a play as you will see in the upcoming World Cup. Way to go Carlos and Matt! Our newest player, Marley Whittaker, got her first taste of soccer as she played on a combined junior team. After the games, the teams were ready for refreshments, which consisted of hot-off-the-grill hot dogs and hamburgers. All players received impressive trophies and a soccer ball was donated to each player. Well, it's only two more weeks to the match of the season and the players are at their peak. It looks like the parents don't have much of a chance to end their drought of 29 straight losses. Hopefully they have been conducting secret practices and creating some trick plays because their conditioning and skill level won't be much of a match for the athletes.

Wildcats festival summary-U-6

The Bratz, the Jets, the Powerpuff girls and the Tiger Sharks got together to play one final time for the season. As I looked out on all the girls I realized that I have known many of these girls since micro soccer and it has been great to watch them play, see their love of the sport grow and make lasting friendships. The girls have developed into great soccer players! Thank you to all my fellow coaches, the parents, and all the girls who make our division great. Thanks for a great season, Coach Terence.

Festival Write-Up girls U6

The girls finished up the Spring 2006 season is fashion with several action-packed games of end to end soccer. The Tiger-Sharks, Power-Puff-Girls, Bratz and Jets squared off against each other. Each team played 3 games of round robin Festival play, with each contest remaining competitive to the end. The play was characterized by great defensive clearing kicks, hard shots on goal and some super saves by the goalies. Fantastic way to end the season girls!! We'd like to thank you all for a great Girls U6 Spring season. We are really seeing a great deal of development out of the girls this season: Sharp laces kicks, defenders clearing the ball wide, goalies coming out to stop an attacker on a breakaway, and nifty cut-back moves. As parents we can all be very proud of how far all of these girls have come since Micro-Soccer. As Division Director, I'd like to thank the coaches - Terence Aquino, Eddie Mooney and Ingrid C for making this a very successful season start to finish. We'd also like to thank the parents for taking the time to bring the girls to and from practice, to the games, and working on their skills on the side. Lastly we'd like to thank all the players - whose smiles, thank-yous and coming of age as players make this all worth while! We are hoping everyone will be back for the Fall season. Just a reminder that everyone can register their daughters online now at http://newhydeparkwildcats.org/

Princesses 3 vs Terriers 1 - The Princesses and Terriers enjoyed a tremendous playoff game this past weekend. The players on both teams gave an outstanding effort in this overtime semifinal thriller. The Princesses got the first goal of the game in the 1st half thanks to the aggressive play of Kaitlyn and Victoria. Victoria controlled the ball and passed to Sara who scored from close range to open the scoring. McKenzie and Tara played offensive and defense creating a good balance for the Princesses. Eva played a super game carrying the ball into the offensive zone while also hustling back to help out in the defensive zone. Ashley played a strong game helping the Princesses control the ball. Jessica played a very smart game, choosing the right time to carry the ball up field and pressure the Terriers. Brittany and Laura were great anchoring the Princesses defense allowing the Terriers few scoring opportunities. The goaltender, Amanda, had the save of the day. She alertly came out of the net to stop a hard charging Terrier in the finals moments of regulation to face overtime. After scoreless first overtime period Sara broke the 1-1 tie with a bullet into the goals. Ashley's shot off the goaltender closed out the scoring in the final minute of the second overtime to secure the Princesses victory. Congratulations to the Terriers on an outstanding team effort. Great win for the Princesses who will play the talented Thunder Cats in next week's Championship game. Way to go Princesses!

U10 Lady Leopards - The Lady Leopards faced the undefeated Massapequa Fire with some fire of their own. The wet conditions couldn't extinguish the energy as these two teams met. A solid defense kept Massapequa scoreless until well into the half. Hannah Zeitlin was a defensive dynamo keeping the ball away from the net. She and fellow defenders Eve Rigas, and Caroline Weinberg were sweeping up. Later on, defender Madison Cascio got the ball out of a tough spot and prevented a Massapequa goal. Massapequa managed only one goal in the first half thanks to the work of the defense, and the nice saves of goal keeper Rebecca Lewis. New Hyde Park's offense, meanwhile, was on the move, and constantly finding the holes in Massapequa's defense in order to get the ball up towards the net. Kaitlin Shea showed great persistence as she scored a goal by out maneuvering the goalie close to the net. Danielle Michaels headed a ball thrown in by Massapequa to regain control for New Hyde Park. Alana Cohen showed great speed as she ran up the line. Sofie Klapow, Celeste Lyons and Taylor Ross also kept the ball moving with some nice passes. In the second half, Celeste took over goal tending duties. Massapequa managed their second goal with a kick over her head, but Celeste kept them scoreless after that with her agile diving. Rebecca went to defense, where she drew the line that no Massapequa player could find a way to cross. Nicole DeSouza arrived for the second half, and showed her usual determination on offense. Despite their great effort, New Hyde Park was limited to the one goal because of the skill and strategy of the Massapequa team. Still, it was an impressive outing for the Lady Leopards. The girls were out in full force on a soggy, rainy day. New Hyde Park Pantherettes. The girls once again met a very formidable opponent in the North Shore Lighting and lost. North Shore are undefeated, with a large goals for to goals against differential, and this was evident in their play. Julia and Maria split goaltending duties and were solid, but well placed shots by North Shore were just out of their reach. They were key in turning saves into plays that quickly transitioned into offensive drives upfield. The lone goal for the Pantherettes was provided by Jenna who dribbled the ball up the field and finally getting off a well placed kick that landed in the corner of the net. Good offensive plays were provided by Jeanmarie, who sailed a shot just wide and Julia, who drove up field with Katy, but the ball got way at the last second and North Shore's goalie was able to scoop it up. On defense, Maria, Brittany, Lisa and Ellen played their wall like presence to stem any North Shore attack, with Ellen providing some fancy footwork to keep the ball away from the talented North Shore offense. Brianna displayed tough play with some key take aways, sometimes against two or three players. Splitting time between offense and defense was Antonella, Jennifer and Destinee, who provided good ball movement on both sides of the field. They were able to get excellent penetration into North Shore's zone on multiple occasions. Despite the Pantherettes tough defense, good ball control and passing, it was the aggressiveness and speed of North Shore that kept the game out of reach of the Panterettes.

GU-11 Travel

Saturday June 3rd, the Lady Jaguars traveled to Farmingdale to pounce on the top rated Storm. The Jags defeated their division rivals by the score of 4-1. Game Captain Ashley Tuffy was brilliant in goal, stopping 10 of 11 shots taken by the high powered Storm offense. The Jags defensive corp of Jillian Stacom, Julianne Randazzo, Emma McGrath, Enza Decrescenzo and Meaghan Ginty were rock solid and held the Farmingdale team scoreless in the 1st half. Coach McGrath stressed the importance of the game in his pre-game talk with the girls, and the Lady Jaguars responded in splendid fashion. At about the 14 minute mark of the first half Jillian Graziano (assist) crossed a ball that deflected off of the back of Victoria Caccamo (assist) and found its way onto the foot of Gabriella Tomasini who gathered the ball and blasted it past the keeper to put the Jags up 1-0. (The Jags who only had 6 shots on goal for the entire game made them count connecting for 4 goals.) With 8 minutes left in the half the Ladies were back on the scoreboard when Jill Graziano (assist) crossed the ball to Emma Innella (assist) who deflected the ball to Left Wing Ailish Malone who buried the ball in the left corner of the net for the goal. The half ended with the score 2-0. Coach McGrath told the girls that it was important to score the next goal before the Storm could get back into the game. Again the Jags responded to their Coach. Seven minutes into the 2nd half Alison Ricchiuti put the jags up 3-0. Jillian Graziano, who was the offensive star of the game, recorded her 3rd assist of the contest as she crossed the ball to Victoria Caccamo (assist). Victoria lifted the ball to Ali (Gator) Ricchiuti, who banged the ball into the net for the goal. The Farmingdale team did not give up as they scored one of their own to close the gap to 3-1. The defense rose to the occasion squashing any of the Storms attempts to score. Erica Sousa controlled the game from her Center Midfield position the entire game, helping both on offense as well as defensively, and was a big factor in the victory. Between Erica and Meaghan Ginty they probably headed the ball 10 times during the game. The 4th and final goal came with about 4 minutes left in the contest. Alison Ricchiuti (assist) passed the ball to Emma Innella who placed the ball over the Farmingdale goal keeper and into the top, right side, of the net for the goal. The Lady Jags have a big week with a make up game against the Garden City Dare Devils on Wednesday at I Park, their final regular season game against the Albertson Elite Fury on Saturday and the Waldbaums Cup Final on Sunday vs. the HBC Power. Thanks to all of the Parents and friends that came out to Farmingdale to root the girls on.

NHP Lady Stormcats 1 - Plainview Old Bethpage 0 - Just a fantastic game against POB under somewhat adverse weather conditions(somewhat??) For those family members who stood and watched this game, they saw another 60 minutes of action packed soccer. Our girls continue to perform top notch and did so through the rainstorm and the lakes that formed on the turf. Our girls play both sides of the ball and it is such a pleasure to watch their grit and hustle and determined play throughout a match. On a set play from an indirect penalty, several yards outside POB's 18 meter box, we called for the "tap-tap". Jen Morga gingerly tapped the ball to a rock steady Alicia Brewer who nailed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the ole onion bag for the deciding goal of the match. It was great to see the celebration, although i was a bit fogged up from the weather!! The game contiued on with many opportunities, but between the puddles, the mud and a POB keeper who made many saves, we just couldnt net another one...BUT...one was enough! Thanks to the total team effort and a relentless defensive effort by our girls. Recording the clean-sheet,sharing keeper duties were Alexandra Pappacena and Dureya Syed. Super work by our attacking players: Amanda Cavallaro, Tabinda Syed, Samantha Athenas,Patricia McMullan, Jen Morga and Roshni Amin. Stalwart play by our defensive block: Gina Marrano, Alicia Brewer, Dureya Syed and Kelly Kerrane who supported the outstanding play of Dana Davis and Melanie Sferrazza in the back-field. One week left girls, as we finish up at I-Park next Saturday. Well done girls!

Royal Cats Vs Seaford Magic - The Royal Cats and the Seaford Magic had a 3:20 pm game at I-Park. Both teams showed up eager to play ignoring the fact that we were in the middle of a thunder storm. As the coaches and the ref analyzed the field situation, you could hear the players from both teams in the background chanting " We want to Play... We Want to Play!" The pressure was on whether to let them play or not but everyone came to their senses realizing someone could get hurt. I would like to thank the team anyway for their enthusiasom starting with Caroline Rodgers, Angelina Gambino, Amanda Lalik, Amanda Martinez, Paige Rigas, Christiana Kastalek, Priscilla Edwards, Nicole Bateman, Kirsten Brandenburg. Also Gianna Delgiorno, Alexa Giangrande and our goalie Jennifer Hanes,"the great" even though they were no able to attend. This game was rescheduled for this Thursday so stay tuned for the outcome. Thanks

Stray Cats 4 - Hewlett-Lawrence 2

Outstanding effort by all the Stray Cat players in a convincing 4-2 victory over a strong Hewlett-Lawrence team. Just like in prior games the Stray Cats had to play come-from-behind soccer again. Hewlett got to the net first, taking a 1-0 lead early in the first half. The Cats tied it up when Billy Stevens blasted a 20-footer in from the right side. Hewlett took a 2-1 lead early in the second half on a disputed penalty kick. Then the Cats scored on a Gerard Farrell penalty kick to knot the game at two. The tie lasted about a minute until Tyler Carrick bounced one in off the keeper deflection for a NHP 3-2 lead. Chris Ferlazzo scored the Cats final insurance goal off a nice pass from Bryan O'Neill to put the game away. Defenders/Midfielders Cian Fitzgerald, Chris Sacino, Stephan Eranovic, and Ryan Korzevinsky were simply amazing all game, shutting down the Hewlett attack time after time. Goalie Steven Cacchioli made four super saves for the win. Great game Stray Cats!!
