Al Fredericks, After 54 Years, Smoke Free at Last
After 54 years of smoking four packs of cigarettes a day, Al Fredericks, of New Hyde Park, decided to quit smoking June 1, 2003. However, he couldn't do it alone, so he joined the free North Shore University Hospital's Center for Tobacco Control smoking-cessation classes. Due to his joining the program, his wife did as well and she stopped smoking.
New Hyde Park Wildcats Soccer Roundup
Well, the jinx continues. After a miraculous comeback to tie the game at 11, the parents fell to the players in a shootout, 3-1. A combined players team got off to a quick start with several goals right away. They held a comfortable lead throughout, only to see a last minute score by coach Ray find its way through a crowd for the tying goal. Liam Carroll finished with 3 goals to lead a barrage of scorers. Liam O'Brien and Carlos Garcia chipped in with 2, while our newest player, Ife Oni, Matt Saraiva, Billy Russo and Andrew Abberton added one apiece. Debbie Chin and Sebastian Garcia were terrific at midfield with great tackles. Andrew Solar was the star on defense helping to stonewall the opposition and breakup many attacks. Andrew Abberton kept the players in the game by making many saves on shots that looked like sure tallies. Other scorers for the parents/coaches team were Rich Chin (2), Pete Russo (2), Keith Solar (2), Brian Carroll, Bill O'Brien, Jim Lawler and coach Rich. The shootout started off well for the players as the won the coin toss and elected to go last. The parents began weakly and missed their first attempt. Things just went downhill from there. Liam Carroll got the players on the board first and Billy Russo added another. One goal by Keith Solar was all the parents could muster and when Matt Saraiva blasted a hard shot past 2 goalies, the celebration began. Valiant try by goalie Pete who kept the match close. Maybe if he wasn't injured, the parents may have fared better. We'll never know. Wait until next year! A huge thank you to all the young coaches. This was, by far, the biggest and best group of buddies we've ever had. Kerri, Krys, Ray, Jr., Maiken, Matt, Brianna, Jessica, Jonathan, Amy, Gemma, Victoria, Amy, Sara, Danny, Dayna, Nick, Andrew, Michelle, Katelyn, Jenny, Erica, Melissa and Peter have may it a joy to see such an enthusiastic and dedicated band of coaches. To my adult coaches, Ray, Mary Jo, Rich, Pete and Jim - thanks for your help. To Brian Evers, my able sidekick, thanks for being there. And to Rich Hess - get well soon. We missed you.
A Thank You from North Hempstead Town Supervisor Kaiman
