After the public hearing was completed the New Hyde Park Village Board opened its regular meeting.
Mayor Daniel Petruccio introduced to the public New Hyde Park/Garden City Park Superintendent Dr. Regina Cohn. She came to the microphone and greeted the village board and all of the residents in attendance and thanked the mayor for an opportunity to attend a village board meeting.
The mayor then opened up the meeting to any resident who wanted to speak. A resident of North 6th Street came to the microphone to complain about a house under construction. He said that debris was littered all over the yard, there was flying debris as shingles were stripped from the house and it was hard to talk to the workers because they did not speak English. He said he had already filed a complaint with the village but the mayor assured him that someone would be on the site the next day to inspect the property.
However, the resident continued with complaints of rats around his property and of birds and wildlife entering the property through open windows. The mayor once again assured him that the building department would get in touch with the owner.
The mayor closed that portion of the meeting and opened it to trustee reports.
Reporting on Parks and Recreation, Trustee Coppola said that a questionnaire would be sent out to the residents regarding the formation of an adult softball, basketball or volleyball team.
He also said that the renovated William Gill Theatre, atop village hall was available for various activities including, perhaps, movie nights for adults and teenagers.
In reporting on the police, Trustee Coppola said that the police are urging all residents to be good neighbors, especially with the rash of break-ins and if they see something suspicious at a neighbor's house to please call 911.
He also mentioned that the next meeting of the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will be a dinner meeting held Nov. 17 at the New Hyde Park Inn.
He also said that the fire department wants to remind all residents with the change of time there should be a change of batteries in both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, plus residents should have burners and chimneys cleaned to avoid puff-backs due to a build-up of soot.
Trustee Montreuil announced that at the next Zoning Board meeting there would be five cases.
It was also mentioned that both the American Legion and the VFW would hold their Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on the lawn of village hall on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
Trustee Barbieri announced that the first phase of the Jericho Turnpike Renovation project has been completed. The DOT will be announcing that a meeting will be held for public input on the reconstruction of the Jericho Turnpike. Trustee Barbieri said that the village is trying to have them put in medians similar to Hillside Avenue that would include bulb-outs in an effort to try to control traffic on Jericho Turnpike. As soon as that meeting is announced he urged all residents to please attend.
Mayor Petruccio said that there has been a suggestion, since the fair this year was so successful, to move the Annual New Hyde Park Street Fair from September to Oct. 7 of next year. However, before a decision can be made, dates of other events must be checked such as Homecoming, etc. The discussion on this topic is ongoing.
At the end of his remarks the mayor made a motion to end the meeting but some residents went on talking about various topics such as the making of the street on the corner of Dunkin' Donuts a two-way street, just for the day of the fair, since Jericho Turnpike is closed and that would alleviate traffic through the back streets of New Hyde Park. Another resident suggested that the street fair be moved to Sunday. These suggestions will be taken under consideration.
The meeting ended with added discussion about the passed laws and the Jericho Turnpike DOT project.
The next village board meeting will be held Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. at village hall, corner of New Hyde Park Road and Jericho Turnpike.
