The Mustangs went all out in the come from behind 8 inning thriller. Down 4 - 0 after a shaky 1st the Mustangs settled down playing brilliant defense behind fantastic pitching by Alex Katz, who went 6 innings with 9 K's. He was followed on the mound by Danny Luchino who also worked his pitching magic to keep the Wildcats within range. With the score 4 - 3 Wildcats, Danny Luchino led off the 6th with a booming triple to right field. Danny scored on a ground out by Matt Hirshon tying the score at 4. Twice with the bases loaded the Mustangs were able to escape by killing the Wildcats' rallies. However the Wildcats loaded the bases again in the 8th on 2 walks and a single setting the stage for a thrilling ending. With 1 out and the bases juiced the Wildcat batter launch a fly ball to right field where Brian Renta was waiting for the ball. Brian grabbed the fly ball for the 2nd out and fired a strike to catcher Aaron Brenner who could not handle the big hop allowing the winning run to score. The loss was a hard one to handle but the boys played a fine game capturing 2nd place in the Tournament. The coaches and parents are extremely proud of the Mustangs ball players and their accomplishments this summer. Merillon Thunder Continue Their Winning Ways
The Merillon 11-Year-Old All-Stars ("Thunder") record is now a combined 12-5 in four separate tournaments. After winning District 28 in the Williamsport tournament, the 11 year-olds continued their summer season by winning first place in the HBQVB tournament, and have now qualified for the playoffs in The Glen Cove Tournament.
Standout efforts have been delivered by each member of the 11 Year Old All-Stars, with a different player coming up with a key pitching performance, clutch hit or spectacular play each and every game. The pitching staff consists of Michael Tangredi, Steven Ambrosio, Andrew Chuang, Joseph Citriniti, Nicholas Clifford, Steven Curran, Christian Dluginski, Peter Loduca, Brendan Lum and Louis Simeone. Timely hits and clutch defense have been provided up and down the roster by Jared Root, Andrew Chuang, William Rezin, Louis Simeone, Nicholas Clifford, Peter Loduca, Brendan Lum, Christian Dluginski, Michael Tangredi, Steven Ambrosio, Steven Curran and Joseph Citriniti. The Thunder hope to cap off a truly successful Summer Tournament season by making it to the Finals in the Glen Cove Tournament, and winning its third first place crown of the summer.
