  • News: Dr. Hayes Introduced as Herricks Assistant Superintendent of Personnel

    The Herricks School Board, at its last meeting, introduced to the public the new Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Curriculum Dr. Deirdre Hayes. Her official term of office, with the board's approval, began Aug. 1 so that she could have the opportunity to work for several weeks side by side with retiring Dr. Ronald Barnes, who has been in charge of personnel and curriculum in the district for the last 20 years.     Patricia Rudd, the Vice-President of the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School District and a trustee of the Sewanhaka Central High School District for two years, has been elected as Vice President of the Sewanhaka Board of Education. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Merillon Little League Update

    The Mustangs went all out in the come from behind 8 inning thriller. Down 4 - 0 after a shaky 1st the Mustangs settled down playing brilliant defense behind fantastic pitching by Alex Katz, who went 6 innings with 9 K's. He was followed on the mound by Danny Luchino who also worked his pitching magic to keep the Wildcats within range. With the score 4 - 3 Wildcats, Danny Luchino led off the 6th with a booming triple to right field. Danny scored on a ground out by Matt Hirshon tying the score at 4. Twice with the bases loaded the Mustangs were able to escape by killing the Wildcats' rallies. However the Wildcats loaded the bases again in the 8th on 2 walks and a single setting the stage for a thrilling ending. With 1 out and the bases juiced the Wildcat batter launch a fly ball to right field where Brian Renta was waiting for the ball. Brian grabbed the fly ball for the 2nd out and fired a strike to catcher Aaron Brenner who could not handle the big hop allowing the winning run to score. The loss was a hard one to handle but the boys played a fine game capturing 2nd place in the Tournament. The coaches and parents are extremely proud of the Mustangs ball players and their accomplishments this summer. The Mustangs are, Aaron Brenner, Joey Carbone, Matthew Hirshon, Alex Katz, Danny Luchino, Stephen Popovich, Andrew Pugliese, Brian Renta, Michael Ring, Nicholas Simeoli, Patrick Theodoropoulos and Ben Todaro.     The North Hempstead Cup Tournament Committee congratulates Melanie Pavlides from the New Hyde Park Lady Cougars (GU12) as the 2005 NHC Logo Contest winner. The New Hyde Park Lady Cougars will have a free entry to the 2005 North Hempstead Cup Tournament. Pavlides' design will be the new logo for the 2005 Cup. FULL STORY
