This past week I had occasion to visit the Hillside Library three days in a row, just before noontime. For whatever reason, there were a good number of our community's older residents there also.
When parking along Hillside Avenue on Wednesday, two days after Monday's snow, the sidewalk still had not been fully cleared of snow. I noticed a few people pull up to park and then park again further east in front of the school where the snow had at least been cleared. When I inquired inside the library, I was told that it was the school district's responsibility to clear the sidewalk. Upon arriving home, I called the district and reported this condition.
Thursday, March 3, I again arrived at the library to find the same conditions. Again on my arrival home I called and reported this again. I was assured that this would be taken care of.
On Friday it still was not clear of snow, ice and slush. Before entering the library, I went directly to the superintendent's office and reported this condition. I was again assured that it would be taken care of.
That evening, my daughter attended a program in the children's room. I could not believe that this condition still had not been addressed.
Not only is this unsafe for the residents who use the library or children going to the school but it is also a violation of the North Hempstead code. One would think our own school district would be more concerned with the safety of the residents.
I guess all the waiting and delay finally paid off. On my library visit of Sunday, March 5, the snow had apparently melted enough to allow people to safely walk on this sidewalk.
