After a summer of only holding one meeting a month, the New Hyde Park Village board has resumed its two meetings a month schedule. The meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be held on Oct. 19 at village hall, corner of New Hyde Park Road and Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park.
There was a request from the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School district to use the village hall to hold debates for the Odyssey Program entitled "The Constitution Works." The dates for the debates are March 1 and March 3 and the request was approved by the board.
A resident who is not happy with the weed situation at the railroad site or the garbage along the railroad asked if it would be possible to have someone work on a Saturday morning from about 8 a.m. to noon to clean up the area. The suggestion will be discussed by the board and the department of public works.
At the outset of the meeting there was a discussion about a sign to be erected at 247 Jericho Turnpike. The sign will be replacing a sign of the same dimension but the board did not have the application available. Therefore, Trustee Lawrence Montreuil will discuss the matter with Building Superintendent Sam Horowitz and will get back to the owner.
Mayor Daniel Petruccio reported for trustee Richard Coppola. He said New Hyde Park Little League held its annual breakfast where it was reported that this year has been an outstanding season for the league. He also praised the league for opening up its facilities to accommodate two other little league teams that would otherwise have been forced to disband due to lack of coaches. The teams are from Bellerose and Stewart Manor.
Trustee Lofaro said he met with the engineers, representatives from Keyspan, LIPA and Water Authority at a pre-construction meeting regarding the road work project and he said the meeting went well and the mayor has signed the agreements so that the project can move forward.
He said he also met with the representatives of the Long Island Rail Road to discuss the main corridor and when available further information will be discussed with the residents.
Lofaro praised the Department of Public Works for all the work they did in helping at the street fair to make it so successful. The minute it was over they banned together and when they finished you would never know there was a fair held in the area.
Mayor Petruccio also reported for trustee Donald Barbieri on the events at the library.
On Oct. 21 and 28 there will be Toddler Time reading event for children ages 18 to 36 months.
The Cultural Commission has planned a Halloween Party on Oct. 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for the children of village residents.
The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at village hall on Dec. 4. Prior to the tree lighting there will be a program for the children of village residents to start at 3:30 p.m. followed by the tree lighting.
The mayor reported that the day after the street fair the beautification committee members were out planting mums, left over from the street fair, in front of village hall.
Trustee Montreuil reported at the last meeting of the zoning board four cases were heard; one adjourned, one case was amended and there were two new cases. The next meeting of the zoning board will be on Nov. 10. Applications must be submitted before Oct. 22 and they are on a first come first served basis.
Montreuil also reported that 54 building permits were issued during the month of September.
Mayor Petruccio thanked New Hyde Park Village Clerk Patrick Farrell and the staff for all the hard work that went into making the 9th Annual New Hyde Park Street Fair such a huge success. He also thanked the beautification committee for their hard work as well. The mayor commented that in spite of the fact the fair was held on a rain date the turnout was great.
He also asked that if any residents have suggestions regarding next year's street fair to please get in touch with him because the village's aim is to make the fair bigger and better every year.
The mayor commented that at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning he noticed construction was going on in the neighborhood. He stopped at the residence to inform the construction crew that the village code does not allow construction on a Sunday. He reminded all residents that if they should encounter similar incidents to please call him as he feels this an emergency and he will respond.
The mayor mentioned the proposed New Hyde Park Village Master Plan. He said there would be committees and sub-committees set up for this project. Anyone interested in joining can give his or her name to village clerk Patrick Farrell. The purpose of the master plan is to survey the existing conditions with an aim to project community growth over the next two years.
The mayor gave further praise to clerk Farrell for his hard work in researching a new outdoor sign for the village. The old one was destroyed by a windstorm. The new one will be a modern computerized sign.
Resident Marie Carney mentioned that there would be a book discussion held at the village library on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. The book under discussion is Amateur Marriage. Anyone interested in joining the discussion should call Nylah at the library to get a copy of the book.
It was also mentioned by a resident that the landscapers are not to work in the village on Sundays. If any resident knows of landscapers that are engaged in this code violation they are urged to call the village emergency number.
Resident Artie Johnson thanked the members of the village board for having the light replaced to light up the flag on the front lawn of village hall.
Mr. Novak complained about the nightcrew at the taxi stand along the railroad. Mayor Petruccio suggested that he should call the 3rd Precinct with those complaints.
Deputy Mayor Lofaro called for a motion to adjourn and the meeting.
