With the average gas price still at or above $2 per gallon, Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell today called for summertime tax breaks, including suspension of the 4.25 percent state sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel through Labor Day.

"Summer is generally a time of heightened travel, but with gas prices so high, it makes vacationing difficult," said O'Connell. "This legislation would help travelers and would keep the tourism industry thriving while reducing the burden on the trucking industry."

Under a proposal introduced by Assembly Republicans, the state would suspend the 4.25 percent state sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel through the end of Labor Day weekend. Local governments would also have the option to suspend their portion of the sales tax, adding to the savings for motorists. Consumers of gas and diesel fuel in New York would save an estimated $143 million in fuel taxes during the suspension period.

"This legislation is essential to all activities popular during summer months. Skyrocketing gas prices are putting an unbearable economic burden on all New Yorkers. It is extremely important that we work together to get this legislation passed," O'Connell added.
