Continuing our splendid weather, the season finale of the parents vs. players game was a perfect "10"! However, ideal temperatures and clear skies could not change one of sports worst records of continuous loses as the parents lost again - that's 13 years, 26 seasons, in a row! Only the Red Sox and the Cubs are keeping them out of the record books. Looks like the rumor of a trainer for the parents was just that - a rumor. They got beat twice, 13-3 and 7-5, as they were obviously unprepared in either conditioning or skills. The junior game was one of the most lopsided contests ever. Showing that their performance all season was no fluke, the onslaught came early and often. Nick Pusateri had a "hat trick", while Ryan McCurry, Samantha Powell, Joshua Niewierowski, Paul Niewierowski and Rob Valli had two apiece. Rob also was outstanding with his throw in's which culminated in many of the team's goals. Mr. McC. and Samantha's brother were all that kept this match from becoming a shutout. The seniors also spread around the scoring with Jamie Schneider tallying 2 goals and brother Alex, Eugene Simmons, Stefani Egre, Matt Saraiva adding one each. The other score came from a 'team' goal as the parents were desperately trying to fend off another attack they accidentally tipped the ball into their own net. That's the way it went all day. The parents were able to score a few late in the second half led by Jim Lawler's 2 goals, and one each by Mrs. G., Mr. E. and Mrs. A. Eugene Simmons played his last game with us as his family will be moving to NJ and we wish them all the best. NHP's loss will be NJ's gain. (Thanks for that gracious letter in the local papers.) We also presented our annual Jon Ullrich Spirit Award. Jon was one of our young players who passed away several years ago. His family has generously donated money each year for one of the teenage coaches who exemplifies spirit, leadership and participation in our program. This year's winner (voted by a panel of adult coaches and parents), in a very close vote, is Terri Abberton. Terri is able to work with any of our athletes. Six years old or 16 years old, Terri has the ability to adapt to whoever she is helping. Friendly, funny and full of enthusiasm, she blends her attributes well. She took on the challenging task of planning and running some of our practices, no easy task for a teenager. Terri received a $500 check. Since we started this program 13 years ago, we have had over 60 teenage coaches, many of whom are still with us. We have garnished 3 LIJSL TOPSoccer awards, presented to young coaches from all the programs on Long Island. We have been part of community service commitments for schools, religious organizations and athletic clubs all over the region. This season's crop of coaches was the best we've ever had. Special thanks to our adult coaches, Mary Jo Bursig, Rich Bursig and Jim Lawler. And last, but certainly not least, thanks to Brian Evers, my assistant, who continues to inspire and be the foundation to our program and remains a 'kid' at heart. For the fall season we have some new things planned, so come on down and see what makes this such a wonderful experience for so many people. Rich Bletsch
