Those members of the Herricks School Board who voted to resubmit the same budget that was rejected in May displayed an arrogant contempt for the community they were elected to serve. The budget passed on a revote that was propelled by a highly organized campaign of the "education" establishment. The yearly increase of school taxes imposes an awesome burden on the district's senior population, who, for the most part, live on fixed incomes from Social Security and pension payments. These citizens are rewarded in their "golden years" by having as much as one dollar of every three received exacted for taxes, while the bloated salaries of school administrators and some teachers rise to obnoxious levels. By what convoluted logic can payment of a salary to the superintendent of a small district of a salary almost equal to that of the Chancellor of the City of New York, or payment of more than $100,000 to a kindergarten teacher be justified? Such atrocities must be redressed by cutting, not increasing, the salaries of school administrators and of some teachers, by consolidating the administrative staffs of several school districts, and by diverting funds from exorbitant salary levels to the benefit of the children for extra curricular activities, special education and equipment. School budgets in Nassau County must be reduced, not increased. Forcing older citizens out of school districts can only have a deleterious effect on the districts and the county. The spiral of increasing taxes and spending to satisfy the incessant salary demands of greedy "educators" must be ended by taking a sane assessment of things and reigning in the school lobby.
