Inspector Lorraine A. Hannon, a 20-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, has been tapped to be the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Precinct, one of the largest precincts in Nassau that includes, among others, the areas of New Hyde Park, Williston Park, East Williston , Mineola and Westbury. She is the first woman to be appointed to the Commanding Officer position in the 3rd Precinct.
Hannon, a graduate of Adelphi University, has previous experience as a patrol officer and patrol supervisor in the 1st and 4th Precincts, Detective Supervisor in the Juvenile Aid Bureau, Commanding Officer of the Recruitment Section and most recently Commanding Officer of the Personnel and Accounting Bureau, responsible for the budgeting and personnel needs of the Nassau County Police Department.
She says her main goal, as she embarks on her new role, is to build on the existing relationship between the precinct patrol officers and supervisor and the community. Further, she plans to increase the responsiveness to quality of life concerns in the residential and business community.
In a recent community meeting, held in Westbury, Inspector Hannon was most responsive to all of the residents and took her own notes regarding any complaints. In the case of one woman from New Cassel, who said she has been complaining about the speed limit on Prospect Avenue for well over a year, Inspector Hannon said, "That is just too long a time to have the same complaint. I will personally look into this situation and we will do everything we can to try to correct the problem."
Throughout the evening, when there were other complaints she was very responsive to the situation and she definitely has a very "hands on" approach to her new position.
Inspector Hannon is also a member of the Nassau County Association of Women Police, Nassau County Municipal Police Chiefs Association and is also Project Literacy volunteer.
