Note From President - Dominic Marrano

This year, there were three Bob Fiston Memorial Awards given out. The winners included Theresa Longenecker (Sacred Heart Academy), Corinne Tisei (Herricks High School), and Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park Memorial High School). Bob Fiston was the past president of the New Hyde Park Wildcats Soccer Club and passed away suddenly in August of 1997.

His daughter, Beth, played on the 1976 Bobcat team. She has since gone on to attend West Point and graduated in 1998. Beth is currently serving our country in Iraq and will return in October of 2003. We wish her well and all of our support from the Wildcat families.

Top Soccer

TOP SoccerLuck was on our side as the rains held off long enough to allow us to play our semi-annual end-of-the-season players vs. parents

once again, in a burning heap 5-1. The players' skill and endurance clearly overshadowed the only thing the older team had going for them - experience. Nifty passing and a swarming attack, accounted for much of the scoring. Nicholas Marangoudakis, Andrew Abberton and Debbie Chin seemed to score at will as they each tallied one goal. Matthew Saraiva added two more goals to round out the scoring. Chris Correale was terrific at midfield as he intercepted many errant passes and started the offensive charge. Balancing out the center of the field were Nick Pusateri and Joseph Ellul, who were just as successful at tackling and frustrated the parents by reversing the flow of the game time and again. Billy Russo was the standout on defense as he just about single-handedly kept the goalie from having to make any saves. The few weak shots that got through were easily stopped by Gina Ellul. The one bright spot for the parents, was the one miraculously goal by Mr. Marangoudakis. While their efforts were commendable, their execution left much to be desired. Maybe they will learn something from this embarrassment and be better prepared for the next encounter. A few halfhearted practices, run by inexperienced adults, will not suffice against a team of skilled and determined athletes. Congratulations to a well-deserved winning team. Thanks again to all the coaches, new and old, who lend a hand each week to make this all happen. Our veteran coaches brought their usual experience while the new additions added enthusiasm and spirit that will go a long way in perpetuating this program. Rich Bletsch - Director TOP Soccer

Jon Ulrich Spirit Award

Jon Ullrich Spirit Award What is the "Jon Ullrich Spirit Award"? Jon was a young man who participated in our program for a number of seasons. Sadly, he passed away in April 1997. But Jon always came with a positive attitude. His smile was infectious. Jon's family asked us to honor one young coach each year in Jon's memory, emphasizing his spirit, hence the name of the award. The qualifying categories used in assessing the candidates are: age, time with the program and attendance. Then the committee, consisting of adult volunteers and parents, apply the criteria of effort, spirit and leader-ship to make their final selection. This year we had a most difficult time as there was no one clear-cut winner. The committee decided to make three awards to a trio of graduating high school seniors. These young ladies have been with the program for the better part of 4 years. Coming down on Saturday mornings to guide the players, they have grown tremendously over that time.
