Last Saturday the New Hyde Park Wildcats hosted it's sixth annual LIJSL TOPSoccer Tournament at the Denton Avenue fields. While the day was overcast, we had one of our biggest turnouts. Teams from Sachem, Huntington, Smithtown, Garden City, Levittown, Rockville Centre, Oceanside and North Shore joined New Hyde Park to enjoy the sport played by thousands of other youngsters all across Long Island. The main reason our tournament is so successful is our volunteers. Sean McGonigle had a new challenge this year as we added one more field to our usual six, as the number of participants keeps growing. Sean and his band of markers (Kevin Walline, Curt Walline, Brian Evers, Bill Roulis and Joe Russotto), handled it seamlessly. Tony Perrone, Dave Gilroy, Joe Russotto and their staff got the nets to the fields nd set up well before the start of the first game at 9 a.m. (They also had to juggle the pick up of the nets and prepare for the afternoon intramural games as Manor Oaks was under water.) Tony arranged for volunteer referees to officiate all seven fields. They kept the games running smoothly and on time. While no scores are reported, or standings kept, all players were winners. A commemorative patch and medallion, which Debbie Gilroy makes sure is distinctive each tournament, is continues to be well-received by the players. The hot dogs were superbly prepared and timely delivered by Tony Minerva, Brenda Bletsch and Rich Bursig. Thanks to Tony for arranging for us to use the Garden City Park Fire House to cook the hot dogs. The Abberton's, the Solar's, the Bongiorno's, the Dowdell's, Mary Ann Minerva, Debbie Gilroy and a host of young helpers pitched in to serve the hundreds of drinks, hot dogs, snacks and candy to a much-appreciated, hungry band of soccer players.
Thanks to Kathy, not only for the food she supplied, but for the big coolers used to keep the drinks cold and water at each field. Kevin Walline took care of the parking to make sure everyone found a spot for their vehicle. The Lombardo family pitched in to keep an eye on the bathrooms and Michelle Lombardo manned one of the most-sought after activities of face painting. And much to the delight of the youngsters, "Sponge-Bob" made a guest appearance. A big thanks to Marcy Bauer for her help with coffee for the coaches and all the supplies she donated. Jim Lawler was a huge help on the field in organizing the teams within their respective divisions. Rich Hess was a jack-of-all-trades taking charge of many of the behind-the-scene chores which makes this tournament such a success. Thanks to Sportstography for taking the team photos which will be handed out at the TOPSoccer dinner in December. Thanks to our always dependable staff of coaches (Ray, Ray, Jr., Jenny, Mary Jo, Maiken, Matt, Jonathan, Mary, Frank, Jonathan, Nicole, Greg and Dan) for working with our players week-in and week-out. Thanks to Vincent Scott and his NHP Memorial's Key Club for their assistance. Thanks to the core of our program, our players and their families, who make it all possible: Andrew, Elizabeth, Karen, Melissa, Joey, Debbie, Cristina, Dylan, Stefani, Allison, Matthew, Adam, Robert, Zachary, Michael, Billy, Matthew, Eugene, Andrew, Julius, Robert and Kevin. And last, but certainly not least, a big thanks to Brian Evers who has been with me since "day one", for 12 years, and was instrumental in getting this tournament established 6 years ago.

Islip Tournament
It was a wet and rainy weekend for the Columbus Day Tournament. With most games being canceled on Saturday due to the rain, we are all powered up for Sundays matches.
Game 1
We had a great offensive rush from Christopher Pun, Michael Zornberg and Cody Campson. With the lines being changed every few minutes, we sent in the terminators Brian Wood, Matthew Cherson. Our defense was held down by John Brautigam and Daniel Flori with outstanding goal keeping from Brian Ambadjes.
Game 2
The kids were all pooped from game 1 but they put on their gameface and were ready for game 2. The Baymen were coming at us strong. With the forward line pretty much the same as game 1, Matthew, Cody, Christopher, Michael and Brian W kept the ball moving upfield. Defense was held down by John and Brian A and our keeper Daniel was like a Timex, he took a licking, but kept on ticking and coming back for more! Great Job Kids and thanx to the Parents for your support. Its nice to see the kids have fun no matter what the score. Coaches Jack Ambad & Steve Zornberg
Travel Division
Sabercats 1 Elmont 0
A tough offensive game for the Sabercats. The ball went to the sides of the goal, over the goal, it hit the top posts and the side posts. Next time, forwards. Playing against the wind, midfielder Jessica took a corner and Maiken was able to connect and put one in the net. Alicia did another fantastic job defending the net, coming off her line numerous times, she was even knocked down. Terrific goaltending. Nice midfield passes from Ann Marie and Kristen. Defensive line was strong with Alison, Hillary, Christina B and Jaime. Keep taking those shots, Nicole, Danielle, RoseAnn and Courtney.
East Islip 5 Jungle Cats 0
The East Islip Speed defeated the Jungle Cats 5 - 0. The Jungle Cats were unable to field a full team and played the entire game with ten players. While the Speed held the territorial advantage in the first half, they were only able to produce one quality chance. New Hyde Peark could not muster much offense, and were down at the half 1 - 0. For the first ten minutes of the second half the Cats looked like they were on the verge of tying the score. After East Islip snuck in the second goal, the effect of being short handed took hold. The goalies, Sarah and Lauren couldn't be faulted on the goals. The field players (Christine, Daniela, Alison, Christina, Shannon, Rhonda, Annemarie, and Melissa) all played solidly until fatigue and numbers set in. Melissa showed speed and hustle despite coming off an ankle injury. Daniela also gave a great effort while playing with a visibly painful ankle. Don't be discouraged - once we get to field a full team we'll do well.
Dragons (NHP #1-U11)
Dragons came up big in the first half. Kyle Anderson had some nice assists helping David Johnson score the first goal and Tomas Kariotis scoring a pair of goals. David Arkin scored on a nice pass from Devin Abraham. Devin also later scored on a curving free kick. Kevin Pun, Dillon Popovich, Rich Thornton, Oren Kidanian played a solid defense while David Birkdale, Kevin Ryerson, and Andrew Ptacek fought hard at midfield. Chris Maas helped at offense and goalie. Beautiful passing in this game!

Outstanding defense to preserve the shutout by Sanchita, Mary Kate, Lauren and Mary. Continuous offensive pressure was applied by Jennifer. Keep up the great effort girls

LUCKY LUCY (0) VS SUPER CHARGERS (1)
LUCKY LUCY- Super game by both teams. Great defense by Odellia. Christina and Brianna Kresback, great midfield by Casey, Maria and Julia. Great offense by Alexa, Jessica and Enza. Super goalie by Emilee and Brianna Higgins. The team played their best game today. They tried their best to keep the other team from scoring. Great game!!!
SUPER CHARGERS- In the battle between two undefeatedteams the Super Chargers came out on top 1-0 in a very exciting and well played game. Hats off to Lucky Lucy for a excellent effort. Coaches Peter & John had them playing on all cylinders. The Super Chargers remained unbeaten thanks to the combined shut out by goalies Taylor and Dana. Dana Came up big in the closing moments of the game with a crucial save. The super Chargers continue to work well together. Nice passing and movement up field by Kamilah, Kim, Katie, Ashley, Taylor and game co-captain Emma. Good midfield control by Dana & Jillian (playing both offense & defense). Outstanding defensive game by game Co-Captain Kerry "The Rock," Amanda, and Kim. The lone goal was scored by Katie on a penalty kick. The assist goes to Emma who was pulled down in the goal box while attempting to shoot. We hope Savanna feels better as she missed the game due to illness.
PANTHERETTES (1) VS SOCCER PUPPIES (0)
PANTHERETTES- The Pantherettes played great as they applied constant offensive pressure on the strong Soccer Puppies defense. All players had their chances, but only one goal was scored by Victoria. good goaltending from Julianne and Joanna. Jennifer had a couple of injuries, but was determined to stay in the game. Congratulations to both teams for a well played game.
SOCCER PUPPIES- A very closely contested game by the Soccer Puppies against a fine team. Special mention must go today to the two goalkeepers Kristen and Ailish. Definitely save of the season was witnessed by all in attendance, from Kristen in the second half. Kelly, Emily and Amanda excelled in each of their positions. Emma, Ashley and Lady as usual were strong in both defense and midfield. Alexa just gets better each week with her long throw-ins Allison played like a tiger always threatening with her dribbling skill. Finally a reminder to Ally to be sure and lace those boots tight.
LADY DIAMONDS (2) VS GIANTS (0)
LADY DIAMONDS- The Diamonds achieved their first win over the Giants and what a game it was. The defense by Gabriela, Jaclyn and Gina was picture perfect. Putting the ball up to the middle. Katherine, Angelica, Alicia and Lisa never stopped on the attack. The entire game was played on the Giants half of the Field. Great goal by Jaclyn and Angelica. Great Game Girls
GIANTS- In a tough defensive struggle the Giants came up just short. Two bad breaks lead to both of the Diamonds goals. Great goaltending by Samantha V. and Samantha M. kept the Giants in the game. Strong all around efforts by Lucia, Emilie, Alexa and Laura. Go get 'em next week girls.

Soccer Power
On this gorgeous Sunday afternoon in New Hyde Park the Soccer Power girls were sensational! Today the girls demonstrated great team work by playing with such enthusiasm, sportsmanship and superb skills. The offense led by Dena Cavallaro, Ashley Hoffen, Alana Cohen, Ellen Carnero, Jessica Vadala and Alexandra Pallisco showed off their great moves and speed. Geena Fornataro, Jennifer Louie, Sabrina Kalman were incredible on defense by protecting their net. Goaltending which was shared by Alexandra Pallisco and Sabrina Kalman was dynamite. Great playing by everyone and keep up the great work Soccer Power!
Soccer Rockets
The Rockets had their best game yet. The girls are really improving by the minute and it really showed today against the Crocodiles. Excellent goalie play by Claire, Megan (the tiger) and Jesmin was a thrill to watch. Regina was a master at many positions and had many opportunities. Samantha played outstanding defense and showed great speed on offense. Kaitlyn was in on every play whether it was defending the net or on a breakaway to the goal. Claire showed great patience and she led the offense with great moves. Jesmin and Maggie were really on the ball today as well. Marta and Rebecca couldn't make it today and we really missed them. Way to go Soccer Rockets!!!
Barbie Crew
The Barbie Crew played a great game last Sunday. Grace Macedo and Rosalia Vaglica hustled after the ball as goalkeepers. Christine Buyon, Rebecca Lewis and Brittany Rogers led many charges with skillful dribbling. Amanda Mirabile, Lena Guzzo and Celeste Lyons played a tight defensive game. Congratulations to all players on both teams for a fine display of skill, sportsmanship and enthusiasm.
Rainbow Cats
Jenna Ferrante, Meghan Lotti and Elizabeth Giannattasio were superstars as goalkeepers. Excellent defense by Patricia Ferrante, Kathy Kariotis and Gina Cacchioli. Fast running on offense by Maggie Murname and Kristina Theodores. Fantastic team effort by all the Rainbow Cats. We missed Tali Claudio.

Spongebobs vs. Scooby Doos
Another terrific game by all the Spongebobs against a tough Scooby Doo team. The Spongebob offense was led by Chris Ferlazzo, Reed Schweitzer and "Bulldozer" Michael Fink. The offense passed well and had many opportunities. The "Wall of Defense" was led by Andrew Curcio and Chris Sacino. They were unbeliveable in stopping the Scooby Doo offense. Goalies Domenic Acquista and Michael Davang were, as usual, fabulous in stopping the Scooby Doo offense again and again. Great game, Spongebobs!
Roadrunners
Awesome offense by Michael DiMaria, Ty Carrick, Anthony DeMarco and Justin Basque. Great defense led by the wall of Sachit Singal and Jayson Molina. Fabulous goal keeping by Michael DiMaria and Eric Kern. A great game was played by both sides on a beautiful day. Keep it up boys!
Jimmy Neutrons
It was a cool brisk day at Parkville for the 1st game between the Jimmy Neutrons and Road Runners. Starting off a little short handed the Jimmy Neutrons were gung ho. A few minutes into the 1st half our sixth player had arrived. Our offensive push in the first half was led by Matt "Two Tall Jones" Cherson and Matteo Distefano. Midfield was flawless from Cody Campson and defense was held down by John Brautigam and Mark Fuller. Michael Zornberg was in goal and ate everything up and them some allowing nothing by him. In the 2nd half we made a minor adjustment or two. Matthew "Too Tall Jones" played the keeper position and Michael and Mark went to the forward slots as well as Matteo and Cody holding ground in the midfield. I want to thank Jay Campson and Robert Cherson for their help today as the injured coach could view the game from the sideliens. Great job Jimmy Neutrons and Road Runners.
Dexters
After a week off the Dexters offense and defense came back as strong as ever. The offense led by Cian, Kenny, Justin, Matt and Billy with their passing and teamwork made for an exciting game. Our defense was great to the very end which was led by Stan, Michael and Matt. Our goalies were also great. Good job Billy.
Scooby Doos
Congratulations to all the Scooby Doos on a great game with the Spongebobs. A great job of goaltending by James Kennedy and Sebastian Kuryluk. A lot of hustle on offense by Michael Randazza, Sebastian Gomez and Matthew Sartoris. Strong defensive effort by Yovan Kumar, Pete Keenan and Andrew Blumenson.

A SOCCER-FILLED COLUMBUS DAY
FOR THE U-8 BOYS
The Strikers took second place in the rain shortened Columbus Day tournament. After posting two 8 - 0 victories over West Islip and East Islip, first place came down to a penalty kick shootout with Deer Park. A very determined NHP team came up one kick short in a 3 - 2 shootout. Goals were scored by Danny Lorandini and Kevin T. Superb goalkeeping by John Tomasini.
In game one against East Islip terrific goals were scored by Danny, Joe Carbone, John Tomasini., and Kevin T., along with a tremendous quadruple by Steve Reikert. Not to be outdone in game two against West Islip goals were scored by Danny and Kevin (two each), Steve R., Nick Perrone, Mark Roantree and Luke Grgas. Super defense and passing kept our goaltending trio of John Tomasini, John Leva and Luke without much work for the day. After such hard work it was unfortunate that first place had to be decided by a shootout. A wonderful day was had by all and the U-8 boys showed the best of the NHP Wildcat spirit. Special thanks to parents for braving the elements and to Coach Eric for his hard work and patience. The Columbus Day U-8 soccer tournament team got off to an outstanding start in the first match. The game was played excellent by all the boys. We were up 2-0 in the first half as Troy Driscoll blasted two goals set up by passes by Newton Tsang, Chris Earnest, Austin Ward, and John Triptree. Our defense was unstoppable with Patrick Theodoropoulos, Ricky Schlueck and Joe Randazzo working together the clear to ball out of the box. Chris Kariotis shut out the opposing team as goalie, with many great plays. In the second half, we caught some unlucky breaks and ended with a tie. Unfortunately we came up short in the second game as we were over matched by the opposing team, but everyone put in effort and did their best. We missed you Paul Reo. Great sportsmanship by everyone, and a terrific weekend of soccer. Many thanks to the coaches and parents who helped out.
