After September 11, 2001 Daniel Schnitzer, a senior at Herricks High School, spent time crocheting a quilt in red, white and blue. In fact, he even taught some of his friends how to crochet and they made a few squares to add to the project.

After it was completed he decided to sell chances and the proceeds should go to a worthy cause, because above and beyond anything he wanted to "make a difference."

He then decided that he would donate the proceeds of his raffle to the Langone brothers, Peter and Thomas, who both perished in the World Trade Center tragedy. They were both from Roslyn and both members of the Roslyn Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 Fire Department.

Schnitzer spent several weeks selling raffles and was able to raise more than $500 in chances. Last week he was invited to attend a Roslyn Rescue Fire Department meeting and he presented them with a check to be given to the Langone Brothers Education Fund. He held the drawing at the fire meeting and the winner of the beautiful afghan was none other than his own grandmother, who taught him how to crochet.
