TOP Soccer Program
By Richard Bletsch, Director
April 20, 2002
On a gorgeous day for soccer, Center Street saw a magnificent turnout with games being played simultaneously on both fields.
The junior game had an abundance of offense with 10 goals, evenly split between the two teams! The red team had single goals by Christian Buccellato, Joseph Ellul and Brian Murtha. Robert Valli added two tallies to account for their 5 goals. The yellow team, not to be outdone, responded with five of their own. The attack was spear-headed by the two Andrews, Solar and Raihl, each with two goals. Rounding out the scoring was Joseph Horan, our newest player, to knot the match at five.
The senior match was quite spirited and see-sawed back and forth until the final goal in the last two minutes. The blue team, wearing their new pinnies, got a huge boost from Stefani Egre with two goals. However, the red team had a more diverse group of scorers and just out-numbered their opponents by a 3-2 final score. Eugene Simmons, Joe Andreani and Melissa Bauer teamed up for the offensive barrage.

Magic Cats 1 Massapequa 2
On a rainy afternoon, the magic cats went out to Massapequa and gave it their all. Shannon Kearney, Ali Fernandez, Katelyn Chiasera and Shannon Flynn on the assault as our front line strikers kept their defense and keepers very busy throughout the game. Solid at midfield were Ali Siciliano, Laura Carr and Ali Nielsen who scored our goal in the second half of the game. Our keepers, Megan Favale and Amy Maxwell played flawlessly taking many shots away from the Massapequa strikers. Our defenders, Nicole Contrada, Dolores Yovino and Kelly Smolenski worked hard. Congratulations girls, even though we lost. We know that this was a tough game and you all did well. Good Job ... Go Magic!
Speedycats 5 Wantagh Waves 0
The Speedycats played another solid game both offensively and defensively. The first goal was scored by Marylu Donovan on a cross from Alicia DeMarco. There was a beautiful shot by Lauren Marra to give us a 2-0 lead. The next goal was a cross from Marylu Donovan which Alicia DeMarco headed into the net. Diane McCormack made a great run and scored our 4th goal. The final goal came from Jessica Galante off a corner kick from Marie LaMaida. The defense of Alicia Ezat who had many outstanding kicks, Denise Ingram who is always rock solid, Kim Grammas and Samantha Selvaggio was a key to the shut out. The mid-fielders Cassie Green and Nicole Thomas had some great runs. Once again Janelle Reif and Joanne Montoni had another shut out performance. Great Job Speedycats!!!
Pumas 1 Hicksville 2
The Pumas faced the very tough, division leading Hicksville Warriors at Soccer Park. What a game. Hicksville came in a bit over confident, and the Pumas matched them stride for stride. Unfortunately, a late goal spoiled the great effort by the boys. The defense was solid again, led by Joe Tempone, Giovanni Palazzo, Matt Warren and Matt Coker. Strong mid field play by Sal Costa, Seth Levine, Dan LoRe, and Bobby Hugli kept the pressure on. Chris Ganz, Carmine Gironda and Chris Kassoff led the attack, with Kassoff getting the lone tally for the Pumas. Ganz and Stephan Rigaud kept it close with great saves in net. This was another great all around team effort. Well done boys. Keep up the good work. The bounces will start to fall your way.

Little Neck Thunderbirds 1
Jungle Cats 1
Everyone played a great game in this exciting tie. Jesssica was super in goal for the Cats, turning aside numerous Little Neck attempts. The Cats started the scoring on a goal that showed two great plays. Andrea followed up on her own corner kick, centered the ball, and Christina S. put it away after muscling her way through several defenders. The Cats yielded a similar goal in the first half, an unstoppable followup to a corner kick. The Jungle Cat defense, consisting of Andrea, Nicole, Daniela, and Christine T., came up with a lot of good plays, cleared the zone and turned the ball the other way. The mid-field play was solid, with Danielle, Mellissa, Lauren, Shannon and Rhonda displaying a lot of fight for the loose balls and setting up the forwards. The hustling front line(Christina S.,Kris M., Annemarie and Grace) put a lot of pressure on goal, especially in the second half. Shots on goal were taken by Christina S.(2), Shannon, Annemarie (2), and Grace (post).
Snow Leopards - 1
Valley Stream Lady Bugs - 1
In another close match up, the Snow Leopards and Ladybugs battled to a 1-1 tie. The Snow Leopards goal was nailed by Kim M. in front of a crowded net. Tracie, Alison T., Gina A., Amanda, Ellen, Erin and Jenna had shots as well from all over the field; they just wouldn't find the back of the net.
Jessica, Allison Z., Jamie and Gina M. played very aggressive up front stripping the ball away to start the offense. Katie and Kim S. anchored the defense while Claire played outstanding in goal stopping at least a dozen shots.

Super Chargers 1 vs.
Shooting Stars 2
Two fast goals by the Shooting Stars in the opening minutes of the game made it look like it was going to be a blowout...However the hard work and determination of the Super Chargers made it an exciting game. The Chargers came out to play in the 2nd half. Led by solid defense from Kara Innella, Elizabeth Brautigam, Ramya Anbalagan, Rebecca Krieger & Mary Lorper. Anything that did make it past the defense was pounced on by goal tender Brittany Trumpy whose play was outstanding. The offense came to life with some pressure around the net. Chargers goal scored by Kelsey Brown with a nice pass from Jessica Behr. Other assists on the goal went to Pam Smith & Gaby Conte who started the play. Another solid performance from Michelle Serje at mid field. Nice effort by Jackie O'Connell & Roseanna Morrone (1st game as a mid fielder). With the playoffs beginning next week this game showed the girls what they can do if they put their minds to it. Thanks to Tom Trumpy for your assistance.
Little Rascals - 1 Astro Stars - 0
Little Rascals Comments
A very well played and competitive game. Another excellent all around effort was turned in by Renee Barlev, who not only provided the winning goal as the clock was running down, but also stopped a penalty shot as goalie. Continuous offensive pressure was applied by Jaime Reich, Danielle Verdecchia, Carla Campagna and Meghan Beatty, but the opposition defense wouldn't break. Strong play in midfield by Jaclyn Robichaud, Nicole Fisher and Andrea Cioffi helped keep the Asto Stars on their heels. The defense, led by Diana Losi, Mallory Varrone and Kristin Bocarossa was solid as always.
