The soccer write-ups are a big hit for the soccer players as well as the family members. I would only ask that your articles be submitted to me by 9 pm on Sunday nights. The articles have to be proofread and sometimes edited. I also would like to remind you that there should not be any mention of scoring in the Cabbage Patch or Continental Divisions. This was decided by the Division Directors as well as the League Director.

Special Soccer

April 13

We got off to our usual start with some warm-ups led by Robbie Valli and Lauren Hyman, assisted by Coach Nicole. This got the kinks out, especially for the coaches.

This week we combined all our players into one large game and, once again, the results were close as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie. However, some of the individual successes were pleasantly surprising.

The red team had two terrific goals. One was by Andrew Abberton and the other was by Michael Antonoff, who was able to hold his own against many of the senior players. Robbie Valli, another of our junior players, had a great assist on one of the goals.

Stefani Egre answered for the yellow team with a blast for one goal. Melissa Bauer tallied the other as she is turning into a scoring machine.

Karen Babyak was a standout on defense with some great tackles. Joey Bongiorno came to play and made a difference at midfield, stopping many attacks and setting up some good scoring opportunities for his team. Kevin Ziet demonstrated super skills at both ends of the field.

Outstanding game by Pam Smith and game captain Michelle Serje. Nice pressure by Kelsey Brown, Michelle Serje and Brittany Trumpy. Mountain Lions 4

Merrick Avalanche 1

The Mountain Lions put in their best effort of the young season with a dominating performance. The key to this victory was the defense (Andrew Bott, Robby Martines, Eddie Daly, Paul Roantree & Makis Konstantatos) continuously pounding the ball towards Merrick's net, giving the offense the opportunity to score. Once they received the ball, the forwards quickly attacked. Danny Naso exploded with 4 goals with the help of pass-work and communication from Michael Riccardi and Matt Siracusa. Danny Santarsieri is a magician with the ball. Eric Wendt and Miguel Teixeira put in their best performances of the season at mid-field. Patrick Nicoll played an outstanding two-way game and was an important factor in the win. Johnny Coster continues to boom those punts past mid-field.

Sabercats 1 - Kings Point 0

A well contested game between the Sabercats and Kings Point. Both teams played well ending with a 0-0 tie at the half. Kings Point and the Sabercats had near misses at the goals, but finally a well placed pass from Courtney to Lauren and the Kings Point goalie attacking, Lauren lofted the ball over the goalie and into the net. Jessica, Hillary, Christina, Cristina, Danielle and Jaime worked together as a team on defense. Stefanie made two key defensive plays with Alicia having another shutout. Stay focus, Sabercats, for our big game next week!

Pumas 3 - Middle Country 2

The Pumas hosted their long time division rival Middle Country Lightning.

Facing the wind in the first half, the Pumas found themselves struggling a bit, and down 0-2 at the half. The boys came out flying in the second half. Joe Tempone kept the defense in line with strong support from Giovanni Palazzo, and Bobby Hugli. Matt Warren played a great two way game. Sal Costa and Michael Howard controlled the mid field which set up the Pumas as they stormed back and scored three in the second half to win the game. Christian Mejia Seth Levine and Joe Spota got the goals. Great effort and great comeback. Well done boys-- keep pluggin'. A warm welcome back to Chris Kassoff and our newest Puma, Matt Coker, both making big efforts and solid contributions on the field already.

Lady Jaguars 1 - Hewlett 0

Olivia Rotondi's second half goal capped off our 3rd straight win in Division 1 league play. Lauren Stacom, Lucia Giordano, Stefanie Weitzel and Lauren Baumann shut down Hewlett offense at midfield. Laura Paplexis extended her scoreless streak to 240 minutes. Jennifer Spota and Angela Russo made many one touch passes.

Lady Panthers 3 - Plainedge 2

The ladies took a 2-0 lead at the half in this POW weekend game courtesy of a fine effort by Olivia Peros to net the first goal and a heads up pass from Annmarie McHale to Tanya Shimon who put in the second. Plainedge really put the pressure on in the second half but Brianna Coker saved the day with her aggressive goaltending including a magnificent save on a penalty kick. With about 5 minutes remaining, the ladies peppered the net with a flurry of shots, the best of which coming off a smart pass from Emily Domb to Stacey Wood who hit the post. Finally, Kelcey Zacarese snuck one in past a screened goalie to ice the game. Nice job, ladies, and let's work hard for next week's game against Albertson.

Snow Leopards 1

West Hempstead Wildfire 1

On the day when the players took over, the Snow Leopards proved that they could do it by coming back for a 1-1 tie with rivals West Hempstead.

Gina M., Allison T. and Gina A. provided the firepower upfront for most of the game. Jess, Amanda and Erin fought for everything on the wings. Jamie, Tracie and Kim M. shut down the middle of the field while Kate, Jenna, Marielena and Kim S. closed off the back.

Claire played another great game in goal.

The lone Snow Leopard goal was scored by Amanda on a shot that the Wildfire couldn't clear and put in their own net...

Great game girls, keep up the good work.

Girls U11

TopCats 3 - RVC Rockets 1

Spectacular offensive performance by Deanna Cannella (1 goal 2 assists) propelled the TopCats into an explosive 2nd half. Meghan McCullough's booming kick from 30 yards deflected off the RVC goalie to a waiting Deanna Cannella who passed it over to a waiting Joanna Dombal burying it into the right-hand corner of the goal. Melissa Pastoressa continued her goal-a-game pace on a beautiful feed from Deanna Cannella. Deanna finished off the scoring placing the ball effectively between the left post & the goal. Midfield was controlled with strong play from Caroline Smolenski & Juliana Stalzer. Sweeper, Jennifer Fox continuously cleared the box & Michele Vias came up with saves to nail the win.

Jungle Cats - Girls Under 15

FP Bravehearts 3 - Jungle Cats 0

Goalies Sarah and Lauren came up with a lot of big saves in limiting the score to 3 - 0. The Jungle Cats showed a bit of offensive pressure in the first half with shots from Christina, Lauren and Danielle. The best attempt of the game came off a great move and pass from Christina to Danielle, who blasted a point-blank shot at the Bravehearted goalie. Unfortunately the Bravehearted goalie denied her with a great save. The Jungle Cats were bottled up in their own end for most of the second half. Late in the second half they put some pressure on Floral Park, culminating in a shot by Grace. The Jungle Cats were very happy to see Christine return to the line-up after knee problems.

Speedycats 3 - Auburndale Liberty 0

The Speedycats were impressive today as they posted their third shutout win. The Cats midfielders of Jessica Galante, Lauren Marra, Nicole Thomas, Samantha Selvaggio and Diane McCormack were able to control the action for most of the game frustrating the Liberties. In the first half Marie LaMaida was able to find the back of the net with a shot just outside the 18 meter box. In the second half the Speedycats kept the pressure on with Marie passing it to Alicia DeMarco, at wing, who sent a beauty of a cross to Marylu Donovan for the second goal. Lauren put the game out of reach by blasting a shot past the out stretched hands of the Liberty goalie for the games final goal. Kim Gramas, Alicia Ezat and Cassie Green played solid defense denying any offensive opportunities for Auburndale. The combined efforts of Janelle Reif and Joanne Montoni were outstanding in goal. Way to go Girls!!
