The New Hyde Park Memorial Girls Basketball Varsity team continued its winning streak in pushing it to 12-0.

On Jan. 18 they took over sole possession of first place by beating the undefeated Carey High School in Franklin Square with a score of 49-40.

After being down by seven in the first half the New Hyde Park girls closed the gap on Melissa Flaherty 's two three point field goals with three seconds left to play in the half. The score at that time was 22-19.

After the half the NHP girls came out with a vengeance by both pressing and trapping. Defense helped them take control of a tough battle.

Lisa Karcic scored 23 points offensively and defensively by eight steals and 14 rebounds. Anne Verdino controlled the backboard grabbing 16 rebounds, blocking six shots and scoring nine points. Claire Cossaccio played a key role in the press causing many turnovers mainly because of her disciplined and aggressive style of play. Nicole Hippolis made a key steal late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for New Hyde Park. Keri Hippolis and Bahti Patel were great coming off the bench for the Lady Gladiators.

The girls were informed on Friday by the NYSSOGS/NYSSWA that they were number two in the State in the Class B Division, second to Lourdes of Poughkeeepsie.

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team won its 13th consecutive game with no defeats last Monday when they beat Division High School by a score of 57-38. Lisa Karcic led all scorers with 25 points, 10 rebounds. Anne Verdino once again had 18 rebounds and 16 points; Nicole Lippolis had 9 points and 2 steals; Claire Casaccio had 2 points, Maruascia Bolden had 2 points, 3 rebounds and Melissa Flaherty was great at the point with 3 points and 9 assists. Coach Annette McKeogh call her the defensive stopper. Thanks to all friends and families that came out to cheer the girls on its winning streak.
