Sewanhaka Central High School Board President Martin Cernese announced at the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board meeting that Dr. George Goldstein would be staying on for another year as superintendent of Sewanhaka Central.

It was announced that due to the failure in a seven month search to find anyone that could adequately take over the district, Dr. Goldstein has agreed to stay on for another year which will take him into the 2002-2003 year. The terms of his year agreement will be worked out by both board president Cernese and Vice President Archie Cheng.

The following is the statement made by Superintendent Dr. George Goldstein:

"You are aware of the fact that the board of education has conducted a search for the past few months looking for my successor. The search failed to locate qualified candidates who were willing to put in at least seven to ten years of service as the chief educational officer for what is now the largest school district in Nassau County. In light of this, I have made a decision for the 2002-2003 school year. I have agreed, with the full support of the Sewanhaka Central School Board of Education, to continue for at least an additional year as superintendent. Therefore, I will not be retiring as I had planned. This is based solely upon my professional concern for the future of this district and not for any personal reasons. My devotion and dedication to this district and to this job is certainly well known. I have spent a great portion of my life here and I am deeply concerned about the future of the Sewanhaka district, as you are. I could not leave now without knowing that everything we accomplished will stay in place for at least another decade."
