Oct. 27
New Hyde Park's Special Soccer team traveled to Plainview/Old Bethpage for their fall tournament. On a typical fall-like day, the skies were clear but the wind whistled and the temperatures were crisp. That didn't deter our enthusiasm or determination on the soccer field. While our results were not quite as expected, the effort was there. Our intermediate team got some much-needed offense from Andrew Abberton and Adam Jackson with hard-fought goals.. Andrew and Adam also used their speed and determination to slow down the oppositions offense time and again. Missy Bauer was effective with some terrific shots and steady dribbling. Joe Andreani was a standout in goal. With shots coming fast and furious, Joe was up to the task stopping most blasts and making some acrobatic saves with athletic dives. Karen Babyak and Dylan Dowdell has several key interceptions at midfield. Robert Mancini and Nicholas Marangoudakis had nice passes to jump-start many transitions. Kevin Ziet played very well all over the field with great quickness to enable him to stop many attacks on goal. Billy Russo, Andrew Solar and Joey Bongiorno made a big difference with great defensive tackles. Debbie Chin added some spark with her aggressive play.
After matches against Levittown and Garden City the team was not done as a challenge was issued to the parents for a practice game leading up to the grudge match at the end of the season. Foolishly, the parents were suckered into the match. While they weren't totally embarrassed, they did show a huge discrepancy between themselves and the more experienced players. There's still time for the parents to get some much-needed work in during the next few weeks, but we highly doubt it will make much difference since they haven't won yet!
Next week we return the cozy confines of Center Street on Nov. 3.

Boys U-7 Take First Place at East Islip Fall Classic
NHP opened up the tournament strong with a 6 to 1 victory over East Islip. Goals by Nick Perrone (2), Nick Simeoli, Dan Lorandini, Joey Carbone and Kevin Towey. In game 2, mighty Massapequa was no match for this team. A 7 to 1 victory was the result. Goals were scored by Danny (3), Troy Driscoll, Steven Riekert, Kevin and Joey. On Sunday morning much tougher teams were in store but our boys were up to the task beating a strong Deer Park team by the score of 4 to 2. Goals in this game scored by Danny, Nick P., Kevin and Joey. Our final game was equally as tough, but our boys withstood the pressure put on by the Village of the Branch and came away with a 4 to 2 victory for the tournament title. Goals in this game by Kevin, Steven, Joey and Patrick Theodoropoulos. Strong effort was put in by Dominick Kaczor, whose midfield pressure led to many scoring opportunities.
I cannot say enough about the goal keeping done by all players, who selflessly volunteered to take on this tough task. Tremendous praise must also go to Kevin and Danny, whose defensive skills save our hides on many occasions. Also thank you to the parents who withstood the rain, wind, cold and everything else mother nature could come up with and gave great emotional support to the team. Special thanks must go to Eric and Caryl Lorandini for all of their efforts in organizing this team. I must say that it was an honor to coach these boys. The Wildcat spirit and teamwork were in full force. Thank you, Coach Tony Perrone.

Boys U-7 take Second Place
A fantastic tournament weekend of games by the New Hyde Park Blue Division. The whole team came ready to play on a very rainy Saturday. We took both games 4-1 and 1-0. Great goals by Mark Roantree and Luke Georges in the first game. Luke's only score in the second was enough to move ahead. The sweeper position shared by John Tomasini, Paul Reo and Peter Gadze shutdown the opponent's offense. The pressure offense by Joseph Vadala, Ricky Schlueck, Erik Samain and Mark Gimelstein forced several assists for the goals scored. Sunday was a cool day to start. We came out strong the first game and won 5-2. A complete team effort in this game created scoring opportunities for Chris Kariotis, john Tomasini, Peter Gadze, Luke Georges and Ricky Schlueck. Joseph Vadala, Erik Samain and Mark Gimelstein pushed the offense to the limit. We lost a heartbreaker 3-2 with 10 minutes left in the last game. Goals were scored by Mark Roantree and John Tomasini. The goalie positions were played magnificently by John Tomasini and Peter Gadze throughout the tournament. The sweeper position played mostly by Paul Reo was exceptional. Big Chris Kariotis took most of the goal kicks, corners and throw in's to move the offense forward. Great weekend for this team! Thank you Leo Gimelstein and Melissa Vadala for some very needed help on the sideline. Coach Socrates Kariotis.
Speedycats 0 - Oceanside Blaze 2
The Speedycats came out a little flat today. When the defense clicked the offense sputtered. When the offense was in since the defense broke down. Kim Grammas was again impressive at fullback, out of nowhere she came behind the goalie and cleared the ball out of the goal mouth to keep the score to only one goal at the half. Joanne Montoni made save after saves to keep the score close. The midfielders played Oceanside tough today led by Colleen Holahan, Allison Ferrara, Samantha Selvaggio, Diane McCormack, Jessica Galante and Lauren Marra. The defense worked hard and did not give up against the Blaze attack and were led by Marie LaMaida, Alicia Ezat and Kim. The offensive charge was led by Alicia DeMarco, Nicole Thomas, Marylu Donovan and Janelle Reif.
Lady Panthers
Another busy weekend for the ladies saw them drop the league game Saturday to Floral Park but rebound nicely Sunday to advance in the State Cup with a win over Patchogue.
Tanya Shimon put the ladies up Saturday with an early goal and Kelcey Zacarese fired a bullet off a feed from Emily Domb to give them a 2-1 lead. Jackie Masci and Jessica Egre were sharp on defense and Annmarie McHale used her speed to blow by the defense and set up chances, but some unlucky breaks and a questionable goal with two minutes remaining left the ladies on the short end of a 3- score.
On Sunday the ladies moved the gall well around the big field at Tully Park. Kathy Gualotuna distributed nicely out to the wings, Jenna Feibus played smartly at stopper, Dominique DeFelice was magnificent at sweeper and Brianna Coker had her usual steady game in the net. Olivia Peros fought hard in front and put in the first goal and Stacey Wood blasted in a rebound for the second, both coming off hard work and nice crosses from Kelcey on the right side. Nice job, ladies, and keep up the good work.
Season Game
Magic Cats 0 -
East Meadow Blade Runners 2
The score of this game does not reflect the playing ability that the Magic Cats showed on the field. Our defensive line headed by Megan Favale in goal, along with Ali Nilsen in the middle, Dolores Yovino and Ali Siciliano kept the ball from penetrating our net for most of the game. Our midfielders, Kelly Smolenski and Lora Carr, kept the ball up to our striking line headed by Katelyn Chiasera, Shannon Kearney, Shannon Flynn, Nicole Fertitta, and Ali Fernandez. Nicole Contrada, who normally is a wall in defense played up on the assault line contributing to the all out effort of our forward line. The forwards relentlessly popped the ball on the net, but somehow could not get it into the E. Meadow basket. However, the E. Meadow team was able to sneak two by us in the second half. Oh well...keep up the good work girls...Go Magic!
State Cup
Magic Cats 3 - W. Islip Titans 0
The Magic Cats put their skills to work against the Titans right from the whistle. There was no stopping the Magic today! All around good playing starting with Ali Siciliano moving the ball up to Shannon Kearney who put an excellent pass over to Katelyn Chiasera who popped one in. Ali Nilsen kept up the great pressure just missing one after another. Kelly Smolenski not only kept the midfield locked up, but played some awesome goal for us in the second half. Let's also mention Megan Favale played a great first half in goal, as well as some awesome defense, showing both fine skills and ball control. Nicole Contrada and Dolores Yovino were a tag team defensive wall stopping any and every assault attempted by the Titans. Nicole Fertitta along with Katelyn Chiasera and the two Shannons, Kearney and Flynn, played the forward line with finesse and great skill. A special mention to Lora Carr and Ali Fernandez who were awesome in both midfield and the forward line, never backing down, and always in the Titans way. Our two other goals came from beautiful passes and team work that was finished by Katelyn Chiasera and Kelly Smolenski who put the ball in the back of the net. Great job, good team work. Go Magic!
Panthers 6 - South Huntington Renegades 5
The Panthers corralled the feisty Renegades in a hard fought offensive battle in Huntington. With the wind at their backs, the Panther's opened the game as Ryan broke through the defense and was taken down in the box. Tyler in excellent from scored the first goal of the game off the penalty kick. Moments later Damien had a strong shot on goal that was deflected and Stephen Philips followed up and tapped in the second goal. The Renegades were not to be outdone, they came back with one goal off a corner kick and right before halftime, the Panthers returned the favor as Tyler scored off a well placed Danny Catapano corner. The tension mounted as the Renegades opened with two quick goals in the second half. Bobby, Frank Arland and Carmelo pressed the defense forward supporting a breakaway by Damien as he lifted the ball over the goalie for our fourth goal. But the Renegades persisted narrowing the lead to one. Chris Mercadante cleared a long ball from the defense, Damien's shot was blocked, but Ryan blasted home a goal. Parents cheered their kids on from both sides of the field as the Renegades came back yet again. Stephen Philips secured our win as he beat two defenders and scored the Panthers sixth goal. This was a nail biter, but the Panther's showed their stuff down the stretch.
State Cup Game on Sunday 10/28
Panthers 5 - Istria 0
The Panther's move on to the fourth round of the State Cup with a win against Istria S.C. in Astoria, Queens. In tough, street soccer conditions, the Panther's opened scoring early as Ryan beat the goalie on the near side with a well-placed left foot kick. Minutes later, Tyler sent a blistering right foot shot over the goalie for number two. The Panther defense of Bobby, Chris and keeper Frank Civitano stifled most of Istria's drives before they got going. In the second half, Tyler got his second goal as Chris Abikaram and Stephen Palazzolo dominated the right wing and placed a strong pass across the middle to Tyler who finished strong. Danny broke out of the defense driving up the right side and making a great cross to Damien who flicked the ball over the keeper for our fourth goal. Stephen Philips and Frank Arland summed it up when Stephen passed to Frank who shot and beat the Istria Keeper giving the Panthers their fifth goal and gaining them entry to the fourth round of the State Cup to take place in April. Great work Panthers!
Snow Leopards 1 -
Lynbrook-East Rockaway 1
On a cold and windy day the Snow Leopards were caught sleeping as the Strikers scored early in the first half. But battling back with the wind in their face, Gina M. scored on a scramble in front of the net to even the score.
The second half was all Snow Leopards as they spent 25 out of 30 minutes in Lnbrook's offensive zone. If it wasn't for some outstanding defense, the Snow Leopards would have put many more in the net. Alison T., Allison Z., Gina A., Jessica, Kim M., Jamie, Amanda, Marielena and Tracie all took shots that were blocked or saved. Katie, Ellen and Jenna held the defense together while Erin, playing her first game in goal, made some great saves.
Great game girls. Keep up the good work.
Lions 2 - Hicksville Hornets 3
The Lions really played hard today but same up short. After keeping the ball in the Hornets end most of the half, Tommy broke through with the first goal of the game on a great pass from Brandon. The defense of AJ, Charlie and Max was strong keeping the Hornets scoreless in the first half. The Hornets came out strong in the second half and tied the score at 1. The Lions came right back and took the lead with a goal from Brandon on a beautiful feed from Stephen C. Once again the Hornets tied it. The Lions seemed to tire toward the end considering they were missing two players. The Hornets took the lead for good but not without some offensive pressure by Drew, Robert and Andrew. Nice job in goal Steve L. Get better Thomas and Alex we missed you. Play tough next week Lions.
Cougars 3 - Island Trees 1
Another outstanding effort by all the Cougars in a 3-1 victory over a tough Island Trees team. The cougars scored early on a 30 foot blast from the corner by Joe Myones. Robbie Ferlazzo scored the team's second goal on a dazzling play through the Island Trees defense. The Cougars sealed the win when "Mr. Direct Kick," John Weitzel, connected on a 40 foot rocket into the upper right corner of the net. Forwards/midfielders Josh Blank, Tommy Graziano, Andy Kalt, Mateuse Sulkowski and Jason Westfal moved the ball well all game. Patrick Holahan made some nice plays on offense. The tenacious wall of defense was led by Conor Kerrane, Jon Paul DiMarco, John Ganz and Robert Butler. Nima Shahi was fabulous in goal. Coach Ganz has his Cougars inspired today. Great game guys!
