NHP #2 2 - Oceanside 2
New Hyde Park was short players Saturday but that only meant they played all the harder. Even after suffering an injury in the first half, Michael came back to score twice in the second half of the game. He scored once on a penalty kick and second from Frank's centering pass.
Abdel did a great job taking over the goalie spot. Kevin and Andreas kept up our defense. The team played well despite adversity.
NHP #2 3 - Oceanside #3 0
New Hyde Park continued its winning streak. They opened up the game with a goal by Eric. Michael caught Oceanside unaware and scored the second goal. They clinched the victory with the third goal by RJ after he weaved through the defense.
Another great job by our defense and midfield as New Hyde Park held Oceanside to only a few shots on goal which were brilliantly defended by Jonathan. Again great teamwork proved to be the winning strategy.
Lady Lions Get Their First Win
Last Saturday vs. CSH Falcons the girls showed their ability to keep in the game and continue to fight. This being their first win of Division One play was a tremendous win for all. The forwards keep the pressure on the Falcons, while the midfield supported them time and time again. The defense showed their true colors and controlled the game with the assistance of our keeper Sarah Mikhail. The goals were scored by Nicole Daly, Alyssa Faller and Danielle Swicki. The defense kept denying the Falcons over and over. They were led by Ariana DiCicco, Alyssa Fishman, Lisa Beatty, Brittany Schenke, Danielle Sawicki and Alyssa Faller. The mids kept the forwards well fed, they were: Meagan Kennedy, Nicole Daly, Dana Obidienzo, Keriann Simon and Juliann Abel. The forwards were Christina Cinelli, Elana Jaroff and Laura Chiasera. Good job girls!
Lady Lions vs. EM Dynamite
This is truly the toughest team to beat in D1. The girls just didn't have what it takes to combat this Dynamite team. Although the girls fought hard, we just came up a little bit short. Keep up the hard work and remain positive, the wins will come!
Lady Panthers State Cup
After a demoralizing loss Saturday to Triple Crown winners Massapequa, the Lady Panthers bounced back Sunday to defeat Division 1 and cross town rival Albertson in an exciting State Cup match decided by penalty kicks. This win was especially sweet after a disappointing loss to the same team (plus a few high impact guest players) at the North Hempstead tournament just a week before. After 60 scoreless minutes, Albertson snuck one by at the four-minute mark of the second overtime. But the ladies came right back two minutes later when Stacey Wood bounced one over the goalie and Olivia Peros roared in to finish it and send it to kicks. In the shootout, Dominique DeFelice and Kathy Gualotuna converted their shots high and hard, but the Albertson goalie made two diving saves to keep the game tied. Brianna Coker was magnificent as she stopped three quality shots by Albertson, leaving it up to Alison Grammas, who showed nerves of steel as she calmly deposited one cleanly into the back of the net to decide it. Good job, ladies, and keep up the good work. But next time try to avoid a shootout. Your parents have enough gray hairs already.
Jungle Cats 0 - Little Neck Thunderbirds 0
The Jungle Cats played a hard fought scoreless draw with Little Neck. After a slow start in the first five minutes, the Jungle Cats were the dominant team the rest of the way, but were unable to put one in the net. The goaltending of Lauren and Sarah was solid. The backline defense of Daniela, Andrea and Jessica was resilient throughout the contest, allowing very few good chances. Danielle and the speedy Nicole had outstanding games on both the defensive and offensive ends. The Jungle Cats best opportunity in the first half came on a beautiful shot off the foot of Shannon. Their best chance of the second half came from a superb run and shot by Danielle. The Jungle Cats mustered several other opportunities including shots by Annemarie, Shannon, Lauren and Nicole. It was a rough game in which numerous fouls and a yellow card was called against Little Neck. The Jungle Cats played a high intensity game and did not back down from the aggressive tactics of the opponent. All of the players put forth a good effort.
Pumas 5 - Deer Park 5
This was a Friday nite special. The Pumas took their act on the road and traveled to Deer Park for a rare Friday night game. After missing on their first three opportunities, which were "slam dunks," the boys began to wonder if the moon was full and their game was going to be "unlucky." They battled from behind from the beginning. Deer Park scored the first three goals. But the boys fought back. Michael Howard opened the scoring with a beauty, cutting it to 1-3 at the half. As the second half began, Deer Park made it 1-4, making the task tougher,. But the tandem of "Joe & Joe" started cutting into the lead. Joe Spota made it 2-4 with a great goal and Joe Tempone scored off a direct kick blast. Down 3-4, Deer Park scored again off a questionable penalty kick. Back came the Pumas, again. Christian Mejia made it 4-5 and Frankie Tloczkowski got the equalizer with two minutes remaining. Well done boys!
Pumas 2 - Smithtown 2
The Pumas took on the undefeated Smithtown Lightning. The team was short handed, injured and banged up. But they came to play, turning in one of their best efforts of the season. Matt Warren filled in on defense and played one of his best games. He also assisted Carmine Gironda on a brilliant first goal for the Pumas. Chris Ganz passed with precision and played tough the entire game. Bobby Hugli played on one leg, and contributed mightily. Seth Levine and Gio Palazzo both went the distance turning in solid games. Joe Tempone, battered and bruised, kept the defense together and never gave up, never came out. Frankie Tloczkowski was a sparkplug, applying pressure all game. Sal Costa nailed the equalizer with just six minutes remaining. What a goal! Daniel Lore had his finest day as a Puma and keeper Stephan Rigaud kept the game within reach with many great saves. Well done again boys.
Speedycats 1 - Albertson Ambush 3
Except for some late second half scoring by the Ambush the Speedycats out played this team. The forwards of Marie LaMaida, Alicia DeMarco and Marylu Donovan had golden opportunities but could not capitalize. The defense of Alicia Ezat, Denise Ingram and Kim Grammas gets better and better. Midfielders Ali Ferrara, Lauren Marra, Diane McCormack, Samantha Selvaggio, Jessica Galente, Joann Montoni and Nicole Thomas made some great passes to the front line. Good goaltending from Janelle Reif and Joanne.
POB 2 - Lions 0
On a sunny Saturday afternoon the Lions faced a tough team in the POB Lightning. Though playing in the Lightning's end most of the afternoon the Lions just couldn't find the net. The defense was strong once again but POB prevailed in handing the Lions their first defeat of the season. Go get them next week.
Lindenhurst 3 - Lions 1
The Lions faced a strong team from Lindenhurst in their second round cup game. Lindenhurst scored early in the game and the Lions were playing catch up all game. The offensive pressure by Alex, Drew, Robert, Thomas, Andrew, Brandon and Thomas was strong but the breaks just didn't go the Lions way. A late goal by Drew off a nice pass from Robert made the game interesting but it was not enough. The defense of Charlie, Max and AJ was strong once again. Nice goalkeeping by Steve L. Keep your heads up Lions.
Cougars 0 - Plainedge 1
In a State Cup game, the Division 6 Cougars played a fantastic game in a tough loss to Division 2 Plainedge. Robert Butler was brilliant in goal, stopping the onslaught of Plainedge shots. The Cougars wall of defense - John Weitzel, Jon-Paul DiMarco, Conor Kerrane, Nima Shahi, along with midfielders John Ganz, Joe Myones, and Josh Blank were absolutely outstanding in shutting down the Plainedge offense. Forwards Robbie Ferlazzo, Tommy Graziano, Andy Kalt, and Mateuse Sulkowski kept the pressure on. Great game, Cougars!
Soccer Cats Win Second Place
At North Hempstead
Cup Tournament
Congratulations Soccer Cats! You played some great-looking soccer at the tournament! Our results were:
Hewlett/Lawrence, 4, NHP 1
Rockville Centre 1, NHP 1
Franklin Square 0, NHP 3
Levittown 0, NHP 3
Speedy midfielder Alexis Davis scored our lone goal against a fine Hewlett/Lawrence team. A tight match against skillful RVC ended in a tie when Jennifer Taglich alertly put a nice one in the net. She also had a long goal that gave us the victory over a determined Levittown team. Forwards Laura Laucella, Ashley Minda, and Nicole Eskenasi scored goals against Franklin Square by capitalizing on accurate passes from their teammates and taking well-placed shots on the net. Stalwart defenders Hannah Edwards and Mary Insinga thwarted attacks all weekend and moved the ball tirelessly up to the midfielders. Midfielders/forwards Clare Adams, Natalie Kelapire, Melissa Nohilly and Jaclyn Tripptree stopped drives with great technique and created plenty of scoring opportunities. And the goalkeeping tandem of Danielle Restivo and Christen Reikert stopped shots on goal and gave us strong punts that generated some nice offensive plays upfield. Thanks to all the Soccer Cats parents for your support! Thank you, Delores Jose, tournament Field Marshal at the Mineola Complex!
Cougars 4 - South Merrick United 0
The Cougars came out roaring in the first of a five game weekend. Tommy opened the scoring, soon followed by a blast from way out by John Paul. Robert was solid in goal, stopping everything that came his way. The defense was led by Big John, Nima, Conner and John. Andy, Josh, Matt, Robbie and Joseph put constant pressure on the SMU defense. In the second half Patrick scored on a nice feed and Jason finished the scoring with a bomb from just outside the box. It was a complete team effort. Special thanks to the parents for helping with the nets. Way to go boys!
Cougars 3 - West Hempstead 3
A fine game played by all the Cougars in a 3-3 tie versus a tough West Hempstead squad. The Cougars fist goal was scored by John Ganz on a perfect pass from Joe Myones. Down 2-1, the Cougars tied the game on a goal by Robbie Ferlazzo, assisted by Jon-Paul DiMarco. Late in the second half, with the Cougars trailing 3-2, John Weitzel put a direct kick into the net from nearly the midfield line to tie the game. Offense/midfielders Jason Weestfal, Mateuse Sulkowski, Andy Kalt, Patrick Holahan, Tommy Graziano and Joshua Blank all kept the pressure on, while moving the ball well. The defense was led by Robert Butler and Conor Kerrane. Nima Shahi was impressive in goal. And, as usual, Margaret Myones led the cheering from the sidelines. Great game guys!
Magic Cats 4 - Syosset 0
Even though the Magic dominated in the first half, with Nicole F., Alley F., and Shannon K. on the attack, supported by Kelly S., and Shannon F., at midfield the score was 0-0 at the half. But all that would change when the Magic hit the field for the second half. Precision passes and excellent heads up plays by Alley S., Katlyn C., Megan F., and Shannon K., each scoring a goal with support from the entire team. What can you say about that Magic defense (gotta love 'em) Alley N., Lora C., Dolores Y., and Nicole C., all rock solid stopping every attempt made by the Syosset Thunder making a very easy day in goal for our keepers. Great job. Go Magic.
Panthers 4 - Manhasset Strikers 0
The Panthers continued league play with a strong outing against the Manhasset Strikers in Port Washington. From the outset our Panthers provided pressure as most of the play occurred in the Strikers end. Midway in the first half Chris Abikaram scored the first goal with a shot that deflected off a defender's leg. Minutes later Tyler hit the crossbar and Steven Phillips put away the rebound. Panther defenders Camelo, Bobby and Chris held control of the midfield with strength and speed. In the second half Danny, Ryan and Damien continued to press their offense. Tyler scored the third goal after intercepting a goal kick, beating two defenders and blasting a strong shot. Chris Mercadante, Frank Arland and Steven Palazzolo pressed the Panther defense forward and Frank scored a goal from the top of the 18-yard box. Another great game Panthers, good luck in the State Cup.
State Cup Second Round:
Panthers 5 - Plainedge Strikers 1
The Panthers stayed home at Hillside Grade to take on the Plainedge Vipers in the second round of the State Cup. The team was at full strength as Frank Civitano came back from an arm injury last week. He played great with seven saves the last of which was a stop against a blistering shot as Frankie came aggressively out of his goal. Tyler opened the scoring with a well placed shot in the first half. The Panthers pressed forward with Danny taking over the left wing and making passes across the center. Ryan scored the second goal off one cross by beating the defender. Our defense was up to the task with Frank Arland showing catch-up speed, Bobby with ball control and Chris Mercadante not letting any balls through. Early in the second half, Steven Phillips broke through midfield and scored on a high kick to the top of the net. Carmelo pressed the defense and scored after a deflected corner kick. Plainedge scored on a penalty kick but Chris Abikaram came right back and scored the final goal to put the Panthers into the third round of the Cup. Keep up the good work.
U-10 Boys
Second Place - East Islip
New Hyde Park Boys under 10 team played at the East Islip Columbus weekend tournament and come home with second place. The team played a total of four games, winning three out of the four games. They lost the first game on Saturday 3 to 1 and won the second game 3 to 1. On Sunday they won the first game 5 to 1 and the second game 2 to 0. The second game on Sunday was a rubber game with a West Islip team that was tied with NHP for second place and the winner of the game would take the second place trophy. The team played a very strong defense led by Danny Sprat in goal and supported by Chris Piscotta, Louis Simione and Raul Basu while John Macaluso controlled the midfield. The team played for the most part with two sets of offense; one led by Joe Wise in the middle and Rob Shenke and Joshua Roca as the Wings. Each of the offense scored a goal in the rubber match against West Islip with Justin Wise scoring in the first half and Joe Wise scoring in the second half.
