The Merillon boys majors all star team traveled to Mansfield University, in Mansfield, PA to compete in the East Coast Summer Classic baseball tournament. It was a step up in competition for Merillon, as the games were played using "professional" baseball rules. Merillon went 1 and 4 in the three-day August tournament, and gained valuable experience by playing travel teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York that have played this style of baseball together for several years. The players and coaches also had a tremendous experience while staying in the dorms on the Mansfield University campus. While each player represented himself and Merillon in a positive manner, the coaches awarded some special recognition to the players:
"Night Owl" awards went to Matt Loosen, Matt Morrisey and Tommy Brennan.
The "Perpetual Smile" award went to Steve Cialone and Nicky Lipinski.
Chris Kassoff was crowned the "Junk Food & Electronic Toy King."
D.J. Gerowski was declared the "Neatest and Most Organized" roommate.
Stephen Kostel had the biggest "fan" club - a 36" fan that came in handy in the 100-degree heat in the dorm room!
The winner of the "Game Boy Marathon" was Chris DiCerbo.
Chris Murphy was named the "MVP of the Dining Hall," thanks to his attacking five hero sandwiches at one lunch.
Ethan Loosen was named chairman of the Mansfield "No Dump" campaign, and quickly promised a Heineken for everybody!
All the players, coaches and families gave special thanks to "Amos," for making sure that Joe Brennan was safe and comfortable in his classic pickup truck, while his automobile emergency was attended to.
