Lorraine Pryhuber, 69, of Manhasset will take on Town of North Hempstead Councilman Angelo Ferrara in a primary election to choose the Republican candidate for North Hempstead Town Supervisor. The winner will face incumbent Democrat May Newburger in the general election in November.

Mrs. Pryhuber, the mother of eight grown children, has been a clerk in the office of the Receiver of Taxes in North Hempstead since 1984. She ran for supervisor on the Right to Life ticket in 1997 and has also run to represent the 11th Legislative District.

Her basic platform is that government is bloated and costs too much to run. She also says that neither of the major parties has been responsible to the people.

In her campaign literature, she states: "North Hempstead needs a working supervisor who does not owe anything to anybody. Someone who sets an agenda, selects the best people based on ability--not on their political connections. And someone who is responsible for everything that goes on.

"The current system is unfair and destructive because it focuses on spending. It must be stopped. And surely we cannot depend on the current Republican Party or the Democrats to improve the situation. Nassau County is changing from Republican to Democrat. This change will not improve the situation; it will only make things worse. What we need are Republican candidates selected by the people in primary elections to represent the Republican Party in the November general election."

Whether she wins or loses the Republican primary, and she is an acknowledged long shot, Mrs. Pryhuber will be on the November ballot on the Right to Life line.

Mrs. Pryhuber says that her campaign has been run strictly by volunteers and gives especial thanks to Robert Previdi of Manhasset, "who not only got so many signatures but went out diligently and passed out literature for me. He believes in me and I hope I will not let him down."

Mr. Previdi ran in a Republican primary election against incumbent Congressman Peter King in the last congressional election. "I think it's important for the Republican Party to have a primary," he says. "That's when you find out what a candidate has to say. It's important to get people involved enough and concerned enough to hold a primary." As for collecting signatures for Mrs. Pryhuber (she needed 2000), Mr. Previdi says he enjoyed it immensely. "I met a lot of very nice people," he says. "It enriched my life."
