TOP Soccer Program
June 16
The final match of the season pitting the parents vs. players, lived up to its hype. As usual, it was a high-scoring affair but the parents were ill-prepared in both skills and endurance and the players (assisted by our young coaches) easily handled them. (However, coaches DeMarco, Southern and Hess may be required to appear before the board to explain the blowout). The players got out to a commanding 7-2 lead before coasting to an embarrassing 7-4 victory. Offense came from a variety of players and with an entire arsenal of shots. The fireplug, Adam Jackson, muscled his way through an army of adults for one goal. Stefani Egre blasted a rocket from 30 yards out that the goalie, Kathy Abberton, never saw and lucky for her or she would have been knocked out of the game. Robert Mancini capitalized on some inexperience on the parents' part and scored on a penalty shot for the second straight game. Kevin Ziet scored two goals and Melissa Bauer added another as the players dominated just about every aspect of play. One particular miscue by the parents accounted for a team goal to round out the wide-array of scoring. The parents got off to a quick start as Pete Russo tallied the first goal then added another later on. Keith Solar was able to scramble in front of the net for a third, assisted by a persistent Marci Bauer, who was on the ground at the time. One play had everyone holding their breath as Tony Minerva and Mary Hess went charging after a loose ball at the same time. Fortunately, skill and talent prevailed as Tony went flying and Mary coolly continued with a crisp pass.
The day was highlighted by the presentation of the third annual Jon Ullrich Spirit Award. What is the "Jon Ullrich Award?" Jon was a young man who participated in our program for a number of seasons. Sadly, he passed away in April 1997. But Jon always came with a positive attitude. His smile was infectious. Jon's family asked us to honor one young coach in Jon's memory, emphasizing his spirit, hence the name of the award. The qualifying categories used in assessing the candidates were: age, time with the program and attendance. The committee, consisting of adult volunteers and parents, then applied the criteria of effort, spirit and leadership to make its final selection. This year's recipient is Amy Hess, who received a letter citing her achievements, and a $500 check! Congratulations!

Snow Leopards 2 vs.
West Hempstead Wildfire 1
In the most exciting, heart pounding game of the year the Snow Leopards added another win to their great season with a 2-1 victory against a really tough and skilled Wildfire team.
After a back and forth 20 minutes of play the Wildfire found a hole in the defense and put one in the net for a 1-0 lead. The Snow Leopards came back and tied the score on two penalty kicks (the first one was called back when the referee determined he made a mistake). Tracie put the first one in and when it was called back calmly put the second one in as well! Score tied 1-1 at half.
Lauren, Gina A., Allison and Gina M. kept pushing on the offensive end. Jamie and Tracie played aggressive, hard-nosed midfield. Ellen, Marielena and Kim S. played an active defense moving up and down the field to cut off any more scoring opportunities. Hats off to Erin, Kim M. and Katie who played all three lines offense, midfield and defense when they were needed. Their aggressiveness helped keep West Hempstead off balance. Incredible shot and score by Lauren on a corner kick for the game winner with 10 minutes left to go in the game. Claire played another outstanding game in goal with some excellent saves and tremendous kicks. Great game girls!

Speedycats 5 vs.
Garden City Shooting Stars 4
The Speedycats ended their season with an exciting win. The first half started with the Shooting Stars scoring the game's first goal. The Speedycats forwards Kim Grammas, Nicole Thomas, Alicia DeMarco and Marylu Donovan answered right back with Alicia DeMarco going on a one-woman wrecking crew. With passes from Alicia Ezat, Colleen Holahan and Marylu gave her, her first "hat trick." Midfielder Allison Ferrara fed a speedy Marylu who netted the Cats' fourth goal. Just when you thought Garden City was done for they came right back and scored three goals of their own. But the Cats had Diane McCormick who with a great second effort put in the fifth and game-winning goal! The Cats' midfielders Lauren Marra, Samantha Selvaggio, Cassia Green, Jessica Galante, Diane Amoroso, Colleen, Allison and Diane won the battle for us at midfield. Goalie Jangle Reef and fullbacks Marie Lambda, Denise Ingrain and Alicia Ezat denied any attempts for Garden City to come back and pull this game out. Nice way to end the season girls with an impressive win!

Lady Lynx vs. Plainedge Rage
Lady Lynx 3 vs. Plainedge Rage 2
Oh baby, when the road seems to be the roughest and the bumpiest you know that sooner or later the ride has to get a little smoother, as long as you stay on the course. Well, our road has been just a little on the bumpy side this season but the Lady Lynx always hung in, and never quit on themselves or each other, and, on this day, with a total team effort, we prevailed.
The Lady Lynx came out and immediately dominated the play, pinning the Plainedge 11 in their own end until our girls were able to break. Dena Zornberg received a brilliant pass from Brigid Fee and took a run deep into Plainedge territory, and just as the red shirts converged on her, Dena cut loose a blast that found the back of the onion basket. We took a 1-0 lead to the half but the Rage had other ideas for the second half.
As soon as you could say, "Wait a minute," the Plainedge Rage solved the Lynx defense once and then again on an own goal (Ouch...who doesn't hate those.) and just like that our girls were down by a goal, 2-1.
Enter J.J. Jung. Jen, the kid that gives the opposing coaches agita, knew it was her time to step up and deliver and she did just that as she raised her level of play late in the game, under a withering sun, and scored not once, but twice giving our girls a lead that was theirs to protect. As tired and worn out were our girls, they reached back for that little extra, and with a few awesome saves by keeper Caitie Clark and the smothering defensive play of Liz Kennedy, snuffed out any further Plainedge chances. The game was ours and once again we led the league in smiles.
The plays of the game were too many to mention but the line of the game was an absolute gem supplied by Katherine Murray, "If ya wanna play tennis, go play tennis but we're here to play soccer!" You gotta love these kids. How 'bout dem Lynx.
Lady Pumas 3 vs. Bayside 0
The run the Lady Pumas started on Sept. 8, 1996 at Fort Totten ended today at the same field against Bayside and, like five years ago, with an impressive victory!
During nine seasons, 31 girls played for the Lady Pumas, accumulating a total of 45 wins, 39 losses and 13 ties, scoring 255 goals and allowing 180, in official competitions.
It was a wonderful experience to have led this fine group of young ladies and now, that they embark on their college careers, we wish them the best!
For the record, we wish to thank Melissa, Michele, Erin, Laura, Stephanie, Sarah, Jessica Ma, Jessica Mo, Lauren, Jennifer, Lori, Carolyn, Laurie, Teri, Sabrina, Roe M., Evelin, Ali, Ai, Monika, Madelyn, Liz, Tracie, Jessica S., Puja, Christy, Alex, Meghan, Maria, Roe F. and Allison for the opportunity to coach you along the years and your parents for their support.
Lady Pumas: Farewell and success in life!

Tigers 3 vs. POB United 0
The Tigers finished off this 2001 spring season with an important win. This was important because it gave the Tigers first place in their division. Dylan Mayer, Dan Wortley, Joe Mercadante and Michael Oddo gave an extreme effort to keep the ball out of their defensive end. At halftime Nick Fishman got the team pumped and Joe and Anthony Mongone told the team to take their headbands off for the second half. This worked because Ray Anderson scored the first goal on a header. Then Allen Williams and Andrew Burnett both scored to seal the deal. Roanoke Amin, Chris Jean-Bart and Luigi Muto gave a great effort. Sean McGonigle played great in goal, recording the shutout. This was a great season for the Tigers!
