Special Soccer

By Richard Bletsch

In a fast-paced contest, this week's junior game displayed an abundance of great offense, super defense and outstanding goal keeping. The white team was spear-headed by Joe Ferrara's two goals, one of which was from a terrific corner kick by Adam Jackson. Adam was a dynamo, especially on defense, with smart anticipation on passes, which he continually intercepted. Ehrin McHenry kept up the charge with her determined tackling and passing. The red team had goals from Christian Buccellato and Andrew Raihl. Eric Schwemmer kept the game even with his spectacular goal keeping.

The seniors also finished in a tie. This game saw stupendous offense. Tommy Serra had a hat trick (three goals) for the yellow team. Andrew Abberton closed out their scoring with the fourth goal. Eugene Simmons kept the game within reach with his stellar saves in the net. Melissa Bauer led the red team as she was their rock-solid net minder. Stefani Egre responded with her own hat trick and John Ferrante added the tying fourth goal.

There is no practice the next two weeks in observance of the Jewish Holiday and Columbus Day. We will return on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Please note, there is one change to our schedule. Saturday, Oct. 28, will be a tournament at Plainview, starting at 9 a.m.

New Hyde Park's own fourth annual LIJSL Special Soccer Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 9 a.m. at the Denton Avenue field, is fast approaching. Come on down for a good time.

Speedycats

Speedycats 3 - Albertson 3

In a game where both teams came ready to play, the Speedycats struck first with a beautiful pass from Colleen Holahan to Alicia DeMarco for the game's first score. The teams battled back and forth with defensive brilliance from Marie La Maida, Alicia Ezat and Allison Ferrara who frustrated Albertson all day. They tied the score midway in the first half, but the Cats midfielders, who each game gets stronger and stronger were led by aggressive playing from Cassie Green, Lauren Mara, Samantha Selvaggio, Jessica Galante and Diana Amoroso, who lofted a pass to the attacking Jen Fabian who closed the first half with the go ahead score.

The second half started with both teams battling for control with them tying the score once again. The cats all the more determined saw the aggressive play of Nicole Thomas, Diane McCormack, Marylu Donovan and Kim Grammas who broke free for the third goal to put the Cats ahead. On a controversial hand ball call from the referee, Albertson converted to tie the score. But the Cats never let up as chances and opportunities came and went, but time ultimately ran out with the final outcome ending in a tie. The Cats goal tending was anchored by Janelle Reif and Danielle Losonci. Keep up the intense play girls you keep getting better and better. We wish a speedy recovery for Denise Ingram, we miss her play.

Stray Cats

Stray Cats 3 - Bayside Sockets 1

Today's game was like feeding time at the shark tank as the Stray Cats blasted shot after shot at a good Rocket's goalie. Midfielders Katie Mooney, Megan Stevens, Alison Fliegel and Lauren DeSimone controlled the tempo of the game and diluted any attack the Rockets could muster. Despite our scoring barrage, the Stray Cats found themselves in the unfamiliar position of trailing one to zero. The team decided at the half since Bayside was triple teaming us in the middle of the field, we would try the wings. From the left Alison Fliegel blasted a goal so hard the Rocket goalie didn't react until the ball was in the net. Katie earned the assist on the game winner as she carried the ball down the center of the field. Kathleen Flaherty scored her first ever Stray Cats goal as Katie passed to the right and Kathleen took the ball to the right corner and shot low into the left corner of the net. In the meantime Lauren and Megan shut down the Rockets limiting them to less than a handful of shots. Mary Hess with some nice passing and Michele Galante with bursts of speed fueled the attack. With less than five minutes left to play, Ashley Campson rose to the occasion as she rocketed a free kick from way outside the 18 meter box right on goal. The Rockets goalie was able to get a hand on it but nevertheless the ball teetered on the goal line as an alert Katie Mooney streaked through the field to tip the ball in for the score. This Stray Cat team is very deep and today on a hot humid day all the Stray Cats had a hand in the victory.

Top Cats

Top Cats 1 - Rockville Centre 0

The Top Cats played their first home game at Hillside Grade School and beat the RVC Rockets in a rain-soaked match. Caroline Smolenski played well and out-hustled a defender to bang in a late first half goal. Meaghan McCullagh, Alli Shea and Nicole Puma hustled to keep the ball upfield. Alert team defense kept the opponents offside and off the scoreboard. Nice job in goal by Michelle Vias and Brianna Coker helping the Top Cats to a hard fought victory.

Lady Lions

Lady Lions 1- Massapequa Shockwaves 4

The score does not reflect the amazing game that our goalie Kati Palmer had. Few times do we highlight our goalie Katie, but she must have had 20 saves during this game. Well done Katie!

The defense had their hands full against this well-skilled Massapequa team. It was a well-fought battle, we just came up a little short. Amazing corner kicks were taken by Brittany Schenke and Lisa Beatty. The lone goal was scored by Danielle Sawicki off a rebound shot from Dayna Obidienzo. The midfield and offense gave tremendous effort. Let's keep up the hard work. The wins will eventually come.

Jungle Cats

Jungle Cats 1 - Valley Stream 1

On Sunday the Jungle Cats played a great game. In the first half we had five shots on goal. AnnMarie Puma stole the ball from the other team and passed it up to Nicole DeSimone who got tripped by a Valley Stream defender. When the defender tried to kick the ball away from the goal, she accidentally scored a goal for us. On the other side of the field, Joanne Montoni saved numerous shots within 15 minutes into the game. We had many great plays by Andrea Neto, Daniella Saciano, Heather Colman, Christine Toth, Rhonda Albaneze and Danielle Marra in the first half.

In the second half Marisa Azzato saved a bunch of shots but one accidentally slipped past her hands. Awesome plays were played by Shannon Lovisi, Joanne Montoni, Jessica Kosorick, Gracie Emanuelle, and Emily Small. Great job girls for pulling out another tie. We would also like to thank our flag man, Tony Puma, for doing a great job and also thank Mario Montoni for bringing cookies and milk for the parents and players for after the game.

Snow Leopards

Snow Leopards 1

Bethpage Blue Lightning 0

What a terrific game for the Snow Leopards! Playing an always tough and disciplined Bethpage team, the Snow Leopards showed the enthusiasm and fire they needed to pull out this victory.

The game started out slowly with Bethpage controlling the tempo and keeping the Snow Leopards pinned in their half of the field. But the outstanding defense of Katie, Kim M. and Marielena kept the Blue Lightning from getting off too many shots. When they finally did, Claire made some big saves in net and blasted the ball out to start the offense going! Once they got the ball the Snow Leopards were relentless in their attack! For the next 20 minutes Lauren and Jamie playing midfield kept feeding the ball forward to Jessica, Tracie, Erin and Allison, where they were making beautiful touch passes; gathering the through ball; driving the ball into the open spaces; and cutting back passes for scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity. Gina A. nailed one of those through passes, with her left foot, past a sprawling goalie for her third goal of the year and the only one we needed today!

In the second half the Snow Leopards picked up where they left off in the first playing almost the entire time in Bethpage's half of the field. Gina M. and Jen were outstanding playing forward, pressuring the ball and not giving the opponent any chance to set up any plays. Kim S. and Ellen shut down the offense by playing aggressive defense, moving all the way up the field to intercept passes and sending the ball out to the wings.

This was truly a team victory today where everybody had a foot, a head, or a body on the ball. Great job Snow Leopards! Good luck in State Cup!

Bengals

Bengals 6 - Port Washington 1

The game started off a little slow and the boys were flat the half until the first goal was scored which got the momentum of the game going. Andrew assisted Sean in the first goal getting the boys motivated. Ryan C. popped the next goal over the goalie's head. The third goal was put in by Robbie who took the opportunity when the opponent's defense thought they had time. A beautiful back pass from Sean gave Matt D. a powerful kick that sailed the ball into the net. The fifth goal was from Matt P. to Sean who landed another goal. Robbie put in the last goal for the Bengal team. Chris V., Tom H., Tom C. and Fernando played mid who worked real hard together keeping the ball up by the opponent's territory and assisted the forwards and other mids. James, Pete, John, Matt s. and Ryan L. played very aggressive in defense and made it almost impossible for their opponents to get through them. Chris L. did a superb job in net again doing what he does best. Great game Bengals!

Mountain Lions

Mountain Lions 0 - Jericho Bulldogs 3

The Mountain Lions were handed their first loss of the season by a tough Jericho team. The boys had several scoring chances but just couldn't find the back of the net (maybe they were just saving the goals for the State Cup game the following day). On the positive side, the team never stopped working hard and giving it their all.

State Cup 9/24

Mountain Lions 11 -

Jericho Hurricanes 1

The Mountain Lions blew away the Hurricanes in the opening round of the State Cup. Playing 11 v. 11 for the first time, the boys played well-positioned smart soccer. With Robby Martines leading the defense of Paul Roantree, Ed Daly and Andrew Bott, every attack by Jericho was smothered and turned around into an offensive opportunity for the Mountain Lions. The goal explosion was led by the hard work of Michael Riccardi (four goals), Danny Naso (2), Eric Wendt (2), Makis Konstantatos, Patrick Nicoll and Robby Martines. On the big field, strong mid-field play was crucial and Daniel Santarsieri, Chris Taglich and Ryan Sin really came through by controlling the pace of the game and setting up scoring chances. Playing forward in the second half, Johnny Coster came out of the goal to help keep the offense flying.

Lady Panthers

Lady Panthers 6 - Auburndale 0

The Lady Panthers won their third straight league game in convincing fashion. Dominique DeFelice opened the scoring late in the first half on a well-placed penalty kick. Nicole Daly added another about a minute later when she controlled Emily Domb's rebound, darted nicely to her right and poked it by a diving goalie. Despite controlling the game, the score at the half was only 2-0. In the second half the defense, led by Kathy Gualotuna, Annmarie McHale, Dominique and Jenna Feibus puhed up to lend support and keep the pressure on. Kelcey Zacarese scored the third goal going top right over the goalie's outstreached arms after some nice ball movement by Jessica Egre and Stacey Wood. Kelcey returned the favor by setting up a beautiful finish by Stacey. Emily put one in from the left side when Kathy fed a nice ball to her just outside the six-yard box. Stacey tallied the final goal after some hard work by midfielders Erica Southern, Jacklyn Masci and Alison Grammas who worked a perfect triangle to switch fields and get the ball into Stacey with space on the right side. Special thanks to Olivia Peros for a heads up game in goal despite a painful injury to her toe that prevented her from running the field. Good job, ladies, keep up the good work.

Tigers

Tigers 0 - Farmingdale 3

The Tigers are looking much better as a team. The boys are passing, shooting and kicking the ball much better. They are starting to settle in and do team play with all their new players. This was evident on Saturday. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily the first half of the game and it was extremely hard to play. Farmingdale was able to score three times against the Tigers. The second half the rain let up to a drizzle and the team elevated their level of play. There were several shots on goal, a lot of strong kicks and excellent passing. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough. Anthony and Sean were excellent in goal. Nick who usually plays in goal was great in offense. Andre made several great plays as did Luigi, Joey M., Chris and Michael. Our defense was Danny W. and Joey M. Dylan was excellent in midfield.

Pumas

Pumas 1 - East Meadow 1

This was another game for the "Mud Bowl" record books. With the drizzle turning into a steady rain, the Pumas took the field against their arch rival East Meadow Fusion. Down a few players to injury and having only one sub, the Pumas had to hang tough, and pick their opportunities carefully. Giovanni Palazzo had one of his best all around games. His presence was felt everywhere. Sal Costa was as steady and consistent as he always is. Bobby Hugli continued to lead his teammates by example, filling in wherever we needed him. Michael Howard and Matt Warren were warriors, bending but never breaking. Once again, the Pumas controlled the game from the start. Cashing in on an opportunity, Danny Goldberg got the lone Puma goal, nailing a loose ball in front, following a beautiful corner by Seth Levine. This was a valiant team effort by the Pumas. Under the most adverse conditions, you played on, picking up your injured teammates big time. From the Pumas, hurry back Chris Brewer and Joe Tempone. We missed you. Imagine if we had all cylinders clicking.

Guest Players

The Pumas B-U12 are still looking for few players to round out their roster and guest players for upcoming tournaments. If you were born after Aug. 1, 1988 and you're interested in some good soccer and joining a great bunch of kids, please call the coach at 358-1845 or write pumajoet@aol.com.

Cheshire Cats

Cheshire Cats 3 - No. Shore Hurricanes 1

Coming off a solid win against the Bellmore Hurricanes the Cheshire Cats came out strong with Kara Beardsley scoring the first goal from a difficult angle. The defensive unit continues to shut down the opposition with strong play from Meghan O'Leary and Stephanie Chan. A nice pass from Danielle Young found Michele Labarbera at the corner of the net for the second goal. With Eileen Hunt and Julia Rowinski's strong forward play enabling the Cheshire Cats to control the second half, a let down by the defense allowed the Hurricanes to close the score 2-1. The girls answered right back with a fine left foot goal by Julia Rowinski to stretch the score to 3-1. Girls, keep up the excellent work and let's start preparing for the Columbus Day Tournament.

Lady Starcats

Lady Starcats 0 -

Wantagh-Seaford 3

Tough loss for the Lady Starcats who were trying to improve on their .500 season. Lady Luck was not with us today as the net was an elusive target. Shots on goal by Meaghan Houst (hit the cross bar), Erin Gilmartin (missed wide), Chiara Imbriano (missed wide) and Sam Rosen, failed to make their mark. Wantagh's goalie also made some great stops. A few breaks our way would have made this a different game. Gutsy performance by Alison Monti in goal who saved a penalty shot.

Despite the final score, our girls played Wantagh tough. Midfielders Deanna Perniciaro, Ashley Weinstein and Christine Cusuman fought hard for the ball and defenders Jacqueline Tursi, Kerianne Stein and Jessika Wong played a valiant game against a strong offensive team.

Let's regroup and get 'em next time.

Another shutout for the Sabercats' new goalie Alicia Commisso. The Sabercats started out strong with the midfielders and forwards pushing the ball toward the goal. Nicole saw Maiken on her left and gave a little push pass to her and Maiken scored. Excellent teamwork, Sabercats. Farmingdale gave the team a frightening moment when their forward had a breakaway and headed straight to the goal. Jessica tried to cut the angle and Farmingdale hit the post.
