The last week of the season turned out to be a fabulous one as we traveled to Plainview/Old Bethpage for the annual LIJSL tournament and barbecue. On a broiling morning New Hyde Park was as hot as the weather. Our seniors played on a combined team with North Shore. Curt Walline, Bobby Lee and John Ferrante made their presence known with outstanding contributions at midfield and on defene. The junior game also blended our players with another team. Andrew Solar represented us well as a standout goalie and Joe Ellul had a super all around game. We had a full team at the intermediate level and had some terrific contests. Displaying an awesome offense, our goal scorers were Eugene Simmons, Andrew Abberton, Stefani Egre and Kevin Ziet. Kevin started out at the junior fields but "dominated" those games and was quickly moved to the intermediate games. He no sooner stepped on to the fields than he scored a goal. The rest of the team was just as aggressive but didn't have the same luck in putting the ball in the nets. Melissa Bauer, Charlie Lanza, Joey Bongiorno and Dylan Dowdell had some great shots but were either stopped by marvelous goal tending or just missed their marks. Billy Russo provided one of the few bright spots on defense as he was fantastic as our goal keeper. As if that wasn't enough, the kids decided to have a "friendly" match against the parents, who were still numb from last week's trouncing. Well, their luck, or lack of it, continued. The regulation game ended in a tie and, once again, the match would be determined by a shootout. This week, Andrew Solar came up big as the goalie who couldn't be beaten, while Joey Bongiorno tallied the winning goal.
Then everyone was treated to hot dogs, hamburgers and soda by a wonderful crew who labored behind a roaring barbecue. Also on hand were NHP's own Rich Christiano and LIJSL President Peter Collins. The players were rewarded with beautiful trophies and a special package of gifts (donated by Modell's), consisting of a knapsack, cap and mini soccer ball. A great way to finish a great season.
Look for our announcements for the fall registration, as we will be starting our 10th year of New Hyde Park Special Soccer!
The Alleycats BU-16 are making a habit of being Champions of 1st Division. Considering LIJSL is the largest youth soccer league in the country, being the best in this group is quite an accomplishment. To do it twice (BU-14 1998) is a feat most teams just dream about. The Alleycats achieved this success despite the many serious injuries suffered throughout this season, not to mention the ornery referees with attitudes. As you would suspect, they tallied the best numbers both offensively and defensively, giving up only seven goals and scoring 37. This was truly a team effort, working as one unit with no prima donna's insisting on the spotlight. Most of all they had fun working hard and staying focused. This is a special moment the Alleycats can take forward for the rest of their lives. It was a royal pleasure to see them performing their magic on the field. Isn't this what it's all about?
Congratulations to: Forwards: Dan Rosenberg and John Dunlop.
Midfielders: Danny Verbanac, TJ Santo, Bobby Thomson, Brian Muldowney, Mike Pries, Steven Kang, Doug Bernstin, Mark Goldman.
Defenders: Rob Trasolini, David Cantor, Stephen Lind, Bryan Wolchok, Mark Badayla, John Joyce and Goaltender Matt Nolan. Trainer Paul Caffrey, Coaches: Bill Dunlop, Eddie Cantor and Milan Verbanac. The Alleycats are one of the state's great teams and will be placed into the very prestigious Premier League next year. Go Alleycats!
Lady Cougars 0 -
Valley Stream United 1
In the final game of the season against the undefeated first place team in the division, the Lady Cougars displayed the utmost in determination and teamwork. Unfortunately, despite numerous close shots, a goal was not in the cards for us today. The offensive throttle was in high gear as our dynamic wings, Stefanie Kovacic on the right and Kim Carini on the left ran circles around the VS defense, crossing and shooting, and bombarding their goalie with a variety of firepower. Nicole Dobranski and Vicky Azzopardi handled center forward, testing the goalie as she bobbled shot after shot. Samantha Laszlo shut down Valley Stream in the first half with some spectacular saves - the highlight when their center forward broke free and challenged Sam one on one, only to be charged head on with kick save by Sam. Allie Bresso's nerves were on edge as she entered the second half in goal, but quickly took control, shattering the VS offensive attacks with spectacular diving and kick saves of her own. The defense, led by Jessica Connaughton at sweeper, Masha Mendietta at stopper, Grace Costanza on the right and Catie Kennedy on the left played with their usual finesse and "in your face" style and took several sure goals away from Valley Stream. Midfield and the tempo of the game was controlled by Teresa Ferraro, Nicole Denara and Colleen Sheridan, who each had several very close shots on goal. "T", who was on fire in the second half, had several heartbreaking direct kicks on net. All in all, the girls had a fantastic season as the team really gelled. The parents want to thank Coach Lovorko and Coach Dan for all their time, effort and dedication. We also want to thank the girls for their sportsmanship, teamwork and a season truly worth watching!
The NHP Magic Cats win first place in their division. This season has been exciting one, from making it to the semifinals in the State Cup to winning five games, two ties and only one loss, scoring 28 goals and only giving up 11 during the regular season. It would be hard to single out one player, since this was most definitely a team effort. From our goalie to our forward line, everyone played hard but most importantly they played with their heart. If I sound proud of my boys, it's because I am, not for the win but for their effort. Great playing by Matt Bender, Matt Bursig, Steven Carpio, Jerson Upegui Ciro, Jefferson Upegui Ciro, Daniel Fini, John Fini, Christopher Garcia, Pasquale Imbriano, Michael Makowenskyj, Michael Nathan, Joshua Rivera, Stephen Stallone, Justin Soluri, John Strohschein, Peter Zapulla. We would like to wish Matt Bender a speedy recovery on his knee surgery and thank Steven Stallone for taking over the tough position of goalie. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our parents who stood by our boys, in the wind, rain, cold and heat, coming to the games and cheering them on and being very supportive. Have a great summer! Rocco Imbriano, Neil Nathan and Frank Soluri.
Game 1
NHP 1 - RVC 0
Game was forfeited by RVC.
Game 2
NHP 8 - Cure of Ars (Merrick) 0
Emily Domb started off the scoring with a low left corner shot off a pinpoint pass from Olivia Peros. Dominique DeFelice was next with a nicely placed penalty shot. Jacklyn Masci went high over the goalie's outstretched arms. Stacey Wood scored from the right off a near impossible angle and Nicole Daly put one in low and hard. Kelcey Zacarese placed one in the low right corner from just outside the box and Annmarie McHale added two - one off a rebound right in front and one from about 30 yards out that stunned the goalie. Kathy Gualatuna, Jenna Feibus, Alison Grammas and Jessica Egre kept the pressure on and provided support for the forwards while stopping nearly all the opponents' rushes. In the rare times when they got by, Erica Southern was there to grab all loose balls and send it back with some booming punts.
Game 3
NHP 3 - Auburndale 0
Olivia, Stacey and Katy got off some good shots with some nice passing and teamwork, but the opposing goalie did a nice job. Despite playing in the Auburndale side almost all half, the score was still 0-0. In the second half, Nicole scored the first goal on a penalty shot when Erica was taken down in the box by the Auburndale defender. Emily scored the second goal with her "super left foot" and Kelcey followed up to ice the game two minutes later. Dominique, Alison and Jenna anchored the solid "D" and Erica and Jacklyn shared the shutout in goal with some smart and aggresive play.
Game 4
NHP 3 - St. Joseph's Ronkonkoma 1
This game was a real test and was closer than the score indicates. Nicole came up big when she opened the scoring by again converting a penalty kick and then lifting the ball over the wall and scoring off a free kick just outside the box to break a one all tie. Erica added the third goal on a well-timed breakaway after Jenna's hard work resulted in a perfect lead pass to spring her. Annmarie took a turn in goal in the second half and showed some good sure hands and nice punting ability. Olivia showed her versatility by doing a nice job at sweeper while Dominique and Jessica played good aggressive defense to keep the box clean.
Game 5
NHP 6 - Lindenhurst 0
In the first half, Annmarie, Alison and Jacklyn worked hard to set up some good chances for each other but Lindenhurst's goalie was outstanding. Finally, Emily passed the ball to Olivia who crossed it over to Stacey who found the back of the net. Kelcey took the ball down the right side and crossed it nicely to Stacey who again was perfectly positioned to finish it for her second goal of the game. Jenna made a second perfect pass right down the middle to Nicole who blasted in #3. Kelcey knocked in a corner kick off the goalie and Kathy blasted in a rebound when Olivia took a hard shot that hit the post. Jessica scored the final goal with sheer determination and outstanding hustle.
Coaches Efi, Lou and Cecil would like to thank all the parents for their time and dedication and congratulate the players on their debut as a travel team. We all hope that this is the start of a long and successful run for the girls where they will not only learn to work together a a team but will develop friendships to last a lifetime.
Father's Day Tournament
Brentwood
Game 1
Panthers v. Dix Hills
The girls came out strong with the temperature blazing in the 90s. Unfortunately, Dix Hills slipped one goal in to gain the victory 1-0. Hats off to Stephanie Zornberg who made a first time appearance as goalie and stopped four blazing shots on goal. Great all around play from Lianna Petruccio, Lauren Waite and Ashley Minda.
Game 2
Panthers vs. Bayshore
The Panthers were smokin' this game clutching the win 2-0. Alexandra Siciliano came up strong with a goal assisted by Nicole Contrada. Megan Favale followed up with an unassisted goal. Great defense played by Dolores Yovino stopping the key player from Bayshore. Once again, Panthers found Stephanie Z. to gain the shutout in goal. Great effort from Jenny Tannenbaum and Nicole Ferttita.
Game 3
Panthers vs. Hicksville
The hot temperatures kicked into the Panthers a little bit. Hicksville came up with the 2-0 win. All the girls played their hearts out. Great goalkeeping from Krista Schlueck. Special thanks to Sam Yovino who officially became the "Waterboy" for the team.
June 18
Game 1
Panthers vs. Middle Country
The Panthers, after playing three games Saturday in blistering heat, were a little tired. They fell behind with a 2-1 loss against Middle Country. Nicole Ferttita coming up strong with the Panther goal. Shaina Stern joined us and gave a great effort.
The highlight of the Father's Day Tournament came when Plainedge forfeited giving the Panthers the victory. However, being that we were all celebrating Father's Day on the soccer field and had use of a field, the Panthers challenged all the parents to a game.
Coach Contrada, staying loyal to his team, was the official goalie for the "Kids." They upset the parents 3-0 getting bonus points for a shutout. Steve Zornberg was penalized for running over Megan Favale giving the kids a penalty shot and scoring. Special thanks to all the parents who participated and supported the Father's Day Tournament.
U-11 Lady Tigers Season Wrap-Up
The Lady Tigers had an excellent season in Division 1 winning the NY State Cup, reaching the Waldbaum's Cup semifinals, and finishing second in the division with an 8 and 1 record. For the entire U-11 outdoor season, the Lady Tigers complied a record of 33 wins five losses and three ties while scoring 126 goals and only allowing 37.
Goalkeeper Lyndsey DeSarbo had a great year with goals against average of 0.86 including 15 shutouts and 145 saves. Ali Timpano spent most of her time at midfield and in the sweeper position and finished third in scoring with 11 goals and 27 points. Debra Prevete finished third in assists and has demonstrated some exceptional skills and stamina at midfield this year. Jamie Bourazeris and her aggressive midfield style had her leading the way with 17 assists and 33 points for the team. Mary Kate Spicer joined the team at the start of the spring season in the forward position and is second in average points per game at 1.29. Domanie Kokkoris, a skillful volleyer, started the season at defense but has since shown that she can be a force on offense contributing seven goals and 19 points. Nicole Cavallaro led the team in scoring with 52 goals and a combined 122 goals in her two seasons as a Lady Tiger. Caitlin Gracia finished her first year as a left defender exhibiting some great tacking skills and dribbling abilities. Domenique Carusone also finished her first year with the team at forward finishing second in scoring with 22 goals and 50 points. Francine Leung has become the power behind the defense with an atomic boot which is sure to also become an offensive weapon next year. Marion Delapena continued to show she is one of the fastest open field tacklers in the league as well as a fantastic defensive recovery player. Raquel Cantu led the way on defense when it came to winning 50/50 balls and also has been giving strong support at midfield. Denise Prevete has been very consistent on defense and may be the team's best one-on-one defender.
The Lady Tigers and their parents would like to give a special thanks to coaches Vinnie and Bernadette who worked hard with the team enduring all the rigor mortis that go along with travel soccer. Also a special thanks to all those who came to watch us play, especially our #1 fan, Uncle John, and to everyone who has supported our fund raisers to help make all of this possible.
A very tough division made for a very competitive weekend. This NHP team played with super desire and tenacity against some of Long Island's best.
The offense was outstanding from the opening touch. Ryan Mummagh, Danny Morici, Danny Catapano and Peter John Mastrandrea had chance after chance, pacing the attack. The midfield was awesome. Strong play by Ryan Connerty, Chris Pisciotta, Alex Bruschi and Charlie Arman kept almost every game close. Our defense was like a brick wall, keeping just about everything outside the box. Nicky Prevete, Joey Weiss and Conner Kennedy played tough all weekend.
We used a few goalies this weekend, but th two standouts were Sean Connerty and Chris Mercadante, who both made saves ready for the high-lights on TV.
Thanks from all the coaches for a fun weekend!

Hornets 3-2 in Sweltering Last Game!
If Hornets do their most stinging in hot weather, the J-Cats knew how to put 'em on ice yesterday. With no subs and one player down it was the athletic conditioning and new passing confidence that puts us on top in the last game of the season. The front line dominated and moved the ball up repeatedly and knew when to take the attack back to keep the drive alive, until Ann Marie lined up a high one that cleared the Hauppauge keeper's hands for the first of three NHP goals. We paced ourselves and made solid passes wherever we could by slowing the game down every chance we got to save energy - a natural instinct for Jungle Cats!
Jessica Kosiorek made her presence known early as she supported many attacks from the midfield, and helped out on defense. Strong penalty kicks and throw-ins from her and Shannon kept the ball under Cat claws most of the first half. The defense - Andrea, Daniela, and Nicole P. was superb in front of keeper Marissa who charged all breakaway corners for a first half Hornet shutdown! Goal shots by Joann, Shannon and Nicole D., who came back from wing to cover the midfield in the second half, not an easy task in the heat and without a stopper. Putting many attacks into motion, Andrea made sweeper steals, and sent the ball uptown to Daniela who pased to L Mid Jessica - assist - for a drive and short pass to Shannon for goal #2. The Hornets caught us off guard and sent their first of two into our net. One was answered quickly by RWing Joanne who hit the post on her next shot but grit her teeth [what a snarl!] and sent the very next one into the Hornet's nest!
The remaining eight minutes were witness to some great defensive plays by NHP as everyone felt the afternoon heat. All defenders had great timing into the ball for big kicks back uptown. Both sides held their breath as the Hornets buzzed their last toward our net. A blazer in the 96 degree haze - it hit the L post, then the R post in a blur. Faster than the adults could follow the ball - Marissa slid under it with her knees first, and smothered it with both arms [don't try this at home parents!] - no goal! Just one of her six saves of the day, complemented by Nicole Palmer's many rundowns denying Hauppauge shots. Grace kept the late threats up with two shots until the final whistle.
To top off the day the J'Cats knew exactly what to do with the Montoni ice bucket when they were finished cooling off - the coach couldn't get away in time and took an icy shampoo. Glad it wasn't shaving cream, again.
Thanks to Coach Colleen, trainer Anton, stats keeper Nick and treasurer Shelly for a fun season.
