Bruce Fleisher, in the midst of a stellar rookie year on the Senior PGA Tour, fired a one over par 73 in the final round to win the 1999 Lightpath Long Island Classic at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Fleisher, who won for the fifth time this year, survived a two stroke penalty for improperly marking his ball on the final hole to finish with a 54 hole total of 206, 10 strokes under par.
Leading by three strokes at the start of Sunday's final round, Fleisher claimed the $180,000 winner's prize, vaulting him back into first place on the Senior PGA Tour money list. Fleisher led the Lightpath Long Island Classic wire-to-wire, and in the final round his lead never dipped below two shots. Fellow Senior Tour rookie Allen Doyle finished two strokes back at eight under par, after shooting a five under par 67 in the final round.
"It was a great week," Fleisher said. "On behalf of the players, I'd like to thank everyone associated with the tournament."
The $1.2 million tournament, Long Island's only Senior PGA Tour event, benefits Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park. This year, a donation of $325,000 was made to the hospital, and over $1.7 million has been raised for Schneider Children's Hospital in the 13-year history of the classic.
This was the first year that the tournament was sponsored by Lightpath, the commercial telephone service of Cablevision Systems Corporation.
