At the outset of the last Williston Park Village Board Meeting Martin J. Mullarkey, P.E., Division Manager of KeySpan Energy was on hand to present the village with a check for $325 for planting "wire friendly" trees.

Mullarkey explained that everytime a "wire friendly" tree is planted in a municipality, his company, which is connected with Long Island Power Authority, donates an amount of money to the municipality who plants trees recommended by LIPA, because in the long run, he said, it will avoid having to trim and cut through the trees when they are gown.

Mullarkey said, "Our company is the only one that has instituted this program and we are now receiving calls from all over the country inquiring about the 'wire friendly' program."

Mayor Joseph Connelly announced that the surveyors throughout the village are assessing the roads that need fixing. He said that it is hoped that they will start with the road near St. Aidan's first and then go from there.

The Annual Memorial Day parade will kickoff on Monday, May 31 with a service at the American Legion Hall, Willis Avenue, Williston Park at 9 a.m. The parade will start after those ceremonies and will culminate by an additional ceremony to be held at Williston Park Village Hall on Willis Avenue and will end with refreshments at the fire house.

Mayor Connelly praised both Trustee Ray Cross and Deputy Mayor Doreen Ehrbar for their hard work; Cross for running a successful golf outing and Ehrbar for the rededication of the Williston Park Gazebo, held last week. (Coverage of that event, pictorially, will be in next week's issue of The Illustratred News .)

Deputy Mayor Doreen Ehrbar announced that a concert by the Herricks High School Show Choir will be held on June 16 at the newly refurbished gazebo on Hillside Avenue. Prior to the concert at 6:30 p.m. a display will be held by the Historical Society, followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Williston Park Pool registration has been ongoing since May 19 and Ehrbar urges all to sign up as soon as possible so as not to miss any days at the pool with its new refreshment stand constructed by the Public Works Department, under the direction of Alan Gelderman and his crew for always "smiling." She thanked all who make the village, "look great."

Trustee Ray Masaitis, after making a few comments about the golf outing, reminded everyone that the Holiday Ornament for this year, which is 5th in a series and is $8 is on display at the library and at village hall.

He also mentioned that the village, in order to celebrate the anniversary of Williston Park Village, is trying to identify businesses in the village which have been operating since the village was formed.

Plus, the Parking Committee is hoping to review stop signs and will then meet with the residents of Park Place.

Ray Cross assured all that the pool and the new concession stand will be completed by the opening on June 19 and will include two senior days in honor of the Year of the Older Person, one on July 9 and another on Aug. 13 no fee will be charged on those days. Plus, there will be a Jamaican Band on Village Night on Aug. 18, to be held at the pool. Swim lesson registration will be on June 13 and a late fee for registration will be charged after June 4th.

A concerned resident wanted to know if the county was checking the village sewer problem. Mayor Connelly informed the resident that he has been told that the county has already been around checking the manhole covers. The same resident also praised the village for all the work it has done for keeping the sump looking nice. However, it was mentioned that the inside of the sump, which is the responsibility of the county, has been neglected. Mayor Connelly responded by saying he would call the county back.

The third comment the resident had was regarding the Italian store that parks its two large trucks on the lot. It was mentioned that by doing so oncoming traffic is obscured. Mayor Connelly said he would look into it.

Another resident wanted to know if the new fire trucks are too big for the village. Mayor Connelly explained that basically the bucket truck is the largest and there are ladders on the smaller machines for second story rescues.

Historical Committee Chairman, Rita Hesse mentioned to the mayor the large amount of garbage in the village during the weekend. She said that a lot of the garbage is just put out to the curb in plastic bags that is attacked by cast. Mayor Connelly said he is going to try to get additional receptacles to place on the street to try to avoid the problem. He said he would try to do whatever possible to solve the problem. He asked any residents who might have suggestions to solve this problem to please get in touch with the Village of Williston Park.

The mayor said that if everyone treats Williston Park as "home" then the problem would be solved.

The next meeting of the Williston Park Village Board will be held on June 21 at 8 p.m. at the village hall.
