In perhaps the most exciting game between high school football teams this year, the New Hyde Park Gladiators fell to the Garden City Trojans on the last play of the game. With just 10 seconds left in the game, Matt Casey found a stretching Dan Doherty down the left sideline for a 57-yard touchdown pass and a 20-14 victory.

The Gladiators not only outrushed the Trojans 214-81 on the strength of Dan Gagnon's 122 rushing yards, but the defense had pretty much controlled the game. Leading 7-0 after Dan Gagnons' 10-yard scoring run near the end of the first quarter, the defense made that lead stand up until the last minutes of the first half. The game was tied at halftime thanks to a beautiful 21-yard touchdown connection between Casey and Coherty in the left corner of the end zone.

The Trojans opened up the second half with a 14-7 lead by marching down field and scoring on a six-yard run by John Maloney. The Gladiators responded with a 10-play drive capped by Tom Catapano's incredible catch of a 16-yard Mike Unger touchdown pass over the middle (between two Trojan defenders).

The fourth quarter was left to the defensesors seemed to be winning the battle of field possession. Halfway through the final quarter, the Gladiators marched down to the Trojans' seven-yard line where Catapano missed left on the field goal attempt.

The Trojans earned their last second shot at winning the game when they stopped Gagnon at their 43-yard line on a fourth and one situation. That's when the stage was set for what could be the play of the year in Nassau County Conference II football.
