At the end of June, North Hempstead Town embarked on the renovation of the Senator Michael J. Tully, Jr. Physical Activities Center, located on Evergreen Avenue, off New Hyde Park Road, New Hyde Park, which is scheduled to be totally completed by Sept. 26. However, the main entrance completion is set for Aug. 26.
Because the facility is used to such a great extent, temporary walkways and entrances leading into the main lobby have been constructed. Anyone with special needs should call Raymond Cross at 327-3110, or any of his staff, so arrangements may be made for easy access to the building during the renovation period.
According to the engineers Sidney B. Bowne and Son, since settling has been a problem with the PAC, 30-36 inches in the last few years, a new design was created utilizing new platforms and "bridges" to each entrance. Each bridge structure will be designed to "float" and adjust to continued settling, which is anticipated to continue, but at a slower rate. In addition, the majority of site utilities/drainage was specially redesigned to be structurally supported from the building to prevent damage as the settling continues.
In a letter sent to all members of the Michael J. Tully, Jr. PAC North Hempstead Town Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Gerard R. Olsen said, "Thank you for your cooperation, together we will make the PAC a safer, more convenient and nicer place. Be sure to join us this summer at all of our North Hempstead Parks for a summer of activities and concerts."
