Tryouts for the Alleycats Boys U-14 team are scheduled for Sunday, June 7, and Monday, June 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Denton School. For information, call Bill Dunlop, 328-0611. In August of 1997 the New Hyde Park Wildcats, as a tribute to its late president, Bob Fiston, established a memorial scholarship. The selection committee of the scholarship fund is now accepting written requests for consideration from college bound female soccer players. Cindy Scianablo set the pace for the Thundercats in the first few minutes of the game with a stunning goal. Lindsay Cilia claimed goal number 2 with a clean shot from the line. Samantha Sopilnick crossed to Danielle Scancarelli for goal number three. Then once again Samantha passed up to Analise Siciliano for back to back goals. Make that number four. Colleen Marino continually gained the zone for the Thundercats and claimed goal number five. Jenna Peveraro and Becky Heineman led the defense with outstanding defensive skills and controlling the ball to the forwards. Always being challenged Sara Aron-Bayof - and Cindy Luk kept the Shooting Stars from advancing the ball. Cindy Scianablo came back to score again with goal number six. Tara Marsigliano and Ali Antman in goal held Roxbury to only one goal. Excellent beginning Thundercats. Cindy Scianablo came to play. On a throw-in from Jenna Peveraro, Colleen Marino passed it up to Cindy who banged it past the keeper. Analise Siciliano worked the ball into the goal for a score. Colleen Marino corner kicked up to Analise, boom, goal three. Colleen passed up to Danielle Scancarelli, goal four. Samantha Sopilnick, off her body, booted the ball up to Cindy, who banged it off the post, Analise picks up the rebound, goal five. Colleen controlled the ball coast to coast, right side, goal six was a blast. Cindy wasn't going to be held back, goals seven and eight. Lindsay Cilia worked and pushed until she was able to net goal nine. Sara Aron-Bayof challenged the defender, stole the ball and rang it past the keeper, goal 10. On the defensive end, Jenna Peveraro, Becky Heineman, Cindy Luk, played textbook defense. Tara Marsigliano and Ali Antman played the net flawlessly. Thundercats now 2-0! Thundercats came out strong both defensively and offensively. Once again, Cindy Scianablo led the team with the first goal of the day. Then Cindy passed the ball back to Analise Siciliano for the second goal. Colleen Marino led the offensive rush. Passing up to Cindy for goal three, and then Colleen came right back with a blast for goal four. Cindy claimed her hat trick with goal five. Sara Aron-Bayof played a strong mid-field. On a pass from Colleen, Sara worked the ball around the Strikers, then passed up the field to Analise for goal six. Lindsay Cilia worked hard setting up goal seven. Lindsay's blast couldn't be handled by the goalie, and Danielle Scancarelli was there to pick up the rebound. Jenna Peveraro kept the ball out of the Thundercats zone all game. Jenna and Becky Heineman cut the angle of play, leaving little room for the Strikers to advance. Samantha Sopilnick and Cindy Luk helped to give our goalies Tara Marsigliano and Ali Antman breathing room and a relaxing day in the sun with only a few shots on goal. Thundercats need to win next game to clinch first. Coaches Bob Heineman and Ellen Marino rallied the Thundercats. Our opposition was undefeated and also recorded all shut-outs. This is a must win for the Thundercats! Sara Aron-Bayof came into this game with a mission. She was there to play. She led the Thundercats with a beautiful shot which was set up by Jenna Peveraro's throw-in and Colleen Marino's pass across the middle. Samantha Sopilnick on a break away got the second goal and the Thundercats were on their way. Danielle Scancarelli banged in goal 3. Cindy Scianablo punched in goal four and Danielle came back with number 5 on a pass from Colleen. Lindsay Cilia worked hard for both her goals this game. Analise Siciliano had one, too. Once again the defense ruled the field with aggressive play by Becky Heineman, Cindy Luk, Jenna, Lindsay, and Samantha. At this time Ali Antman and Tara Marsigliano, our keepers, would like to thank their teammates for their strong performance both defensively and offensively. Way to go Thundercats! Playing full-sided against three premier teams from the upstate region, they knew they would face an uphill battle all weekend. Their efforts and grit showed through this tough weekend as the final scores didn't necessarily reflect the tightness of the games. Opening up against a N. Rockland team which obviously knew how to play, the Aristocats responded with a spirited effort. Forward Melissa Fulgenzi used her speed to provide many scoring chances, and was denied a goal by a tackle and take-down by the N. Rockland goalie. Diana Cotilletta scored the first goal for the team on a beautiful drive through the middle of the field. Ashley Felcon had a strong game setting up the attack, and she scored on a nicely executed penalty shot. Alicia DeMarco's crisp play at sweeper kept N. Rockland away from our goal. Paige Darby was tough at outside marking back. The Aristocats continued to have their share of bad luck in their second game. Starting strong they scored on another gorgeous corner from Ashley Felcon to a waiting Suzie Joskowski who skillfully directed the ball into the net off of her chest. Alicia DeMarco stepped up to center midfield to anchor the attack and drove in a goal of her own. Starting the second half up 2-1, Aristocat fortunes changed when an injury to Ashley Felcon put her on the sideline for the entire half. Alison Luby had a wonderful game at marking back, playing with speed and aggressiveness. Guest player Alicia Ezat and Diana Amoroso combined to control the center of our defense. Danielle Losonci played well in the net. In the end, the Aristocats fell to fatigue as Hewlett knocked in two late goals to win. This was one of those games where the team plays well, has a number of quality scoring chances, and yet the final score gives you a false impression. The Aristocats started the game with a changed line-up, and most of the girls stepped up to the challenge with some spirited play. Paige Darby made her debut at sweeper and responded with some strong play. Diana Amoroso and Lauren Marra were terrific at outside marking backs. Danielle Losonci played some fast midfield in the second half. The Stampede scored their second goal on one of those balls which bounced funny off of the post. Forwards Suzie Jozkowski, Diana Cotilletta, and Melissa Fulgenzi worked hard to develop many good scoring drives. Great effort girls, in a totally unlucky match. In their second contest of the day, the Aristocats faced a strong, physical team from upstate, the Washingtonville Lady Storm who obviously knew the full-sided game well enough to make it to the State Cup semifinals. Aristocat misfortune continued when Washingtonville scored just two minutes in on an obviously blown offside call. Depth and experience were on the Washingtonville side, as the Aristocats struggled to get anything going in the first half. Backs Paige Darby and Alison Luby responded with some tough play as Washingtonville pressed the attack. When Washingtonville scored just seconds into the second half on a ball which bounced high over our defender's head, the Aristocats knew that the rest of the game would literally and figuratively be "against the wind." To their credit, our girls never hung their heads and gave up the fight. Lauren Marra and Diana Cotilletta played some smart two-way midfield. Ashley Felcon got fired up and made the Washingtonville team aware that physical play does not intimidate these Aristocats. The Aristocats had the fortune to close out the weekend against another premier team, the Tri-Valley United. Despite being put into a quick 1-0 hole on another missed offside call, the girls responded with some gritty play against this obviously more experienced team. Suzie Jozkowski and Melissa Fulgenzi ran the wings on this big field but couldn't penetrate the skillful Tri-Valley backs. Ashley Felcon was solid at left side midfield and stepped in to win many loose balls. Alicia DeMarco was cool under pressure at sweeper. In the second half our lack of subs hurt as fatigue and the relentless Tri-Valley attack wore down our defenses. Danielle Losonci was solid as ever in the net. In the end, this tournament was a difficult one if you look only to the win column. As coaches, it gave us the opportunity to see where we need to develop as we grow to a full-sided team. In particular, I'm proud of those many individual efforts by the girls showing determination, pride and courage in the face of the toughest competition under difficult circumstances.

The Firecats traveled to central New Jersey and took home a second place trophy from the Randolph Memorial Weekend Tournament. The opener against Lachmont featured goals galore, as Jen Mason, Lea Bell, Michelle Prizeman (directly from a corner kick), Moira Tuohey, Melissa Suarez and Staci Scianablo (2) all dented the twine in a 7-0 shellacking of the Giants.

The competition turned tougher as the Firecats took on home team Randolph in game #2. Molly Herrick stood tall against fierce pressure early in the game, making several spectacular saves, including one seemingly impossible stop of a rebound from a prone position. The buoyed Firecats then turned on the offense, with Lauren Ratafia tallying twice, once on a short-sider off a pass from Moira and then the game winner on a chip over the goalie from the top of the box after a wonderful set up from Michelle. The defense, spearheaded by Mary McFarland and Jen Mason, took it from there as the Firecats bested the Raiders 2-1.

Game #3 against Sachem saw the continuation of the Firecats' pattern of difficulty waking up (literally) for early morning games. Stellar defensive play from Jen Baumann, Eleni Roulis and Christine Maulion kept the Firecats out of serious difficulty, but the offense could not get untracked. The Spears, seeming to play for a tie, packed 10 and sometimes 11 players into their defensive box, and the tactic proved successful as the game ended with no score.

In the finale against Denville, uncharacteristic loose play in front of their net put the Firecats in a deep, early hole. Most of the remainder of the game was evenly played, but the damage was already done. Janette Antic created a number of scoring chances with skillful ball handling but her big drives could not find the range. High energy efforts by Melissa and Stacci were similarly unrewarded. A late goal by Michelle was not enough, as the Express prevailed 3-1 and took first place. Although the Firecats were a bit disappointed by the final result, they represented themselves and their club well with their skilled and spirited play.

The Lady Leopards participated in the Quinnipiac Valley Invitational Tournament. Playing up in the U-16 age group the Leopards captured second place. They were unbeaten and unscored upon in the preliminary rounds before being hammered in the championship game by a high school varsity team. The Leopards came out on fire and over powered the West Haven team. A balanced scoring attack featured two goals each by Cathy Caballero and Katherine Hock and singletons by Lauren Lidowsky, Lauren Spota, and Patti Leahy. Diana Buccella orchestrated a solid defensive effort that nullified any West Haven attack. This was an exciting game that featured end to end action. Samantha Didrikson and Laura Sasso controlled the midfield. Michelle Colletti and Andrea Hiebler turned in tenacious performances at marking back. Patti Leahy was sensational in goal making several fine saves. Cathy Caballero scored the lone goal on a breakaway. The Lady Leopards turned in a stellar performance in defeating an old nemesis and the current Division I leader. The Leopards got on the board first when Katherine Hock headed in a beautiful crossing pass from Jen Capasso. Hock added an insurance goal in the second half. Once again the defense was sensational. Kim Krakauer was oustanding at sweeper. Patti Leahy had another tremendous effort in goal. Katie Sakowich, Andrea Hiebler, and Michelle Colletti were solid at marking back. The Leopards came out flat against this seasoned team and fell behind quickly. It was all downhill after that. Nonetheless, the Leopards hung in till the bitter end. Alison Papalexis, Laura Sasso, and Lauren Spota played valiantly in the midfield. Patti Leahy scored the lone goal.

Lady Jaguars 1 - Orange Strikers 2

Lady Jaguars 3 - New Haven (CT) 0

Lady Jaguars 5 - Madison Tigers 0

Playing on an all grass field for the first time, the Orange Strikers from CT. struck first for an early 1-0 lead, but as is their trade mark, Heather Burkey's pefect corner found Jenny Spota who touched it in to knot the score at 1-1. In the second half our girls took control of the play with Lucia Giordano and Lauren Baumann who were tracking down the speedy Strikers but with one minute remaining our girls were unable to clear a loose ball and the Strikers capitalized for a 2-1 victory. This goal turned out to be the difference in advancing to the semifinals.

In game 2, our girls dismantled New Haven, led by Amanda DiJanic's pass to Alyssa Friedman for a 1-0 lead. Maria Concilio and Sam Robbins assisted on both of Pamela Fiorillo's two goals for an easy 3-0 victory. Laura Papalexis, Stefanie Weitzel and Heather Burkey provided the shut-out in goal.

Our Sunday morning game versus the Madison Tigers, Sam Robbins scored off a scramble in front for the first of her two goals. Meghan Pate's pass sprung Alyssa Friedman for the first of her three goals. Leah Cantor, Elizabeth Montrieul, Kristen Fricione and Lauran Stacom were playing new positions and played keep away to keep the score at 5-0. Our girls finished second place in our group but only the first place teams advanced.

Danny would like to thank Eddie Cantor for his organizational skills and Denese Giordano for her carpooling help. And we would all like to thank Liz and John Weitzel for their outstanding cocktail party in between and after our games. The fun never stops with our Lady Jaguars' families!

NHP 2 - Yankee United Magic (CT) 3

NHP 2 - Bowie Piranhas (MD) 2

NHP 0 - Long Beach Supreme (NY) 1

The spirited Cyber Cats converged on sunny Potomac, MD, for a tough divisional draw in the Memorial Day Tournament. Each game was hard-fought against evenly skilled competitors - the winner being the one with the last lucky break of the game. Keeper Helen Zelman was poised throughout, keeping each game in reach with some incredible saves in goal despite the tough pitch of the field.

Game 1 pitted the team against the Connecticut Yankee United Magic in a match up of speed and ball control. The Cyber Cats dragged in the first half and went down 0-3. Recharged in the second half, Corinne Tisei led the offensive with gritty ball handling and shots on goal from the right wing. The duo of Megan Stevens and Kara Tloczkowski heated up and provided sizzling drives at the goal to frustrate the defense. The Cats scored their first goal on a terrific corner kick play set up by Genna Himmelstein to Nicole Lippolis for a quick tap back to Genna who lifted the ball over the defenders to Christine Zenzerovic for the score. Later, Christine crossed to Kara for a nice shot and goal number two. Despite numerous opportunities and terrific defense of Karen Trebing to keep the ball on our half, the Cyber Cats were unable to put the ball into the net and ended the game a disappointing 2-3.

In the afternoon, game two against the Maryland team, quick, accurate passing was key to scoring for both teams. Stefanie Stanoli overcame the season long Cyber-jinx of the scoreless first half to move in on a loose ball and drive through the defenders for a textbook shot into the net. Carolyn Durniak provided the defensive punch to thwart the Bowie Piranha attack. In the second half, Kim Costanzo challenged the keeper over and over from the left side and Kathleen Flaherty alertly reacted to a long backfield pass to beat out the keeper and post the second goal. The final score was 2-2.

On Sunday morning in a tight race for the playoffs, the Cyber Cats knew they had to beat a team they knew well from Long Beach. Both keepers were busy throughout the game. Vicky Parente maneuvered in and out of defenders to feed the ball up from midfield. Lindsay Martin pounded the ball from the 18 meter area with airborne shots on goal. In the second half, Lauren DeSimone tirelessly ran down the keeper on saves in the box but the score remained 0-0 until the final minutes when a corner kick was deflected to an unmarked Long Beach player who connected with the far corner of the net. The final score was 0-1 and the Cyber Cats were eliminated from further rounds.

The tournament did not start the best way for our girls, who got caught asleep during the first 30 minutes, allowing two goals on two defensive lapses. However, they came alive in the second half and they put the opponents on the defensive. Scoring chances were created, but the lack of accuracy of the final touch dictated the final outcome. A very physical and intensive game right from the beginning, and one could tell that the winner would be the one to score first...Our defense under Rosemary and Lori's lead sustained the opponent's pressure, while Liz, Puja and Carolyn tried to feed the offensive line where Ali was causing problems to L. Grove. The luck of the game turned the opponent's way on a deflection from a free kick, that the sparkling Allison couldn't handle. The Pumas' final assault was impressive, but anxiety gave way to rational play and with it the undeserved loss. Facing the long ball playing Huntington for the second time in one week, Christy and Tracie controlled the opponent's fast wingers, while Alex blast put the Ladies ahead by the fifth. Meghan increased the lead by the 20th for an uncontested 2-0 at half time. The same Meghan gave Maria's cross the best direction, early in the second, during which time Jessica was outstanding on defense and Sarah showed some bright flashes. Ali's second minute goal seemed to have gotten the Ladies on track for an easy victory. The official's intimidating tactics took their toll on our girls in spite of Liz and Rosemary's efforts to bring the game under control. Relief came thru Lori's powerful shot from a direct free kick 30 yards out and Ali put the game out of contention, by the 25th minute of the final period. Carolyn filled in superbly as GK for the second time in the day, while Puja had an outstanding game in midfield.

A battle for third place and for pride, made our Ladies outplay the unknown Garden City on the rainy afternoon. The rock solid defensive line of Christy and Jessica formed an unsurpassable barrier and Evelin's feet provided the magic missed in the previous two days. Alex's rebound shot found the back of the net by the 15th, while Maria kept knocking on G.C.'s door. The opponent's reaction in the second half led them to the equalizer, after Tracie had stopped a penalty kick! But Meghan's right wing cross found the incoming Ali for the final touch and truth on the final score!

It was a good tournament, girls! The outcome could have been better, but sometimes we do forget coaches recommendations. Thank you to the parents for their support, although a better control of our emotions would certainly help the team's performance!

Justin Soluri led the charge and charged through the defense to score our first goal. Just before the halftime whistle Justin again was on the charge and sent a beautiful pass to Pasquale Imbriano who put us into the lead at halftime with the goal. Pasquale continued to his hot play as he scored two more goals in the second half for a hat trick with another assist from Justin. Steve Stallone played solid in defense along with Mike Nathan and Patrick Carter continually stopping any attack.

The midfield play of Evan and Scott Chen continued to feed our forwards with the ball. Super goaltending by Matt Bender.

The Magic Cats continued their dominating play in the second game as four different players scored in a 7-0 romp. Justin Soluri again ignited the offense as he accepted a pass from Pasquale Imbriano five minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Chris Garcia made it 2-0 when he received a beautiful pass from Evan Chen and placed it in the net. Pasquale not to be denied, angled a shot into the net. Pasquale also added another goal when he launched a rocket which bounced into the net. Justin also added another goal when he received a perfectly placed pass from Peter Zappulla. Robby Nilsen, playing aggressive in defense, stepped up and blasted a shot into the net from the top of the box. Mike Makowensky, whose continuous hustle paid off when he blasted a shot into the net. John Fini and Chris Sigmund were tremendous in dfefense. Great offensive pressue by Dan Fini. A shutout by Matt Bender. After a long gap in between games and due to a scheduling conflict, the boys had to play a shortened game and immediately were down 1-0. The injury bug bit us in this game when both Pasquale Imbriano and Justin Soluri went down with injuries. Pasquale hurt his ankle and could not return for the rest of the tournament and his presence was sorely missed. Dan Fini and Chris Garcia played their hearts out in forward and John Fini and Mike Nathan and Robby Nilsen played super in defense. The Magic Cats had an early game on Sunday mrning and took some time to wake up. Justin Soluri scored off a corner kick from John Fini to start off on scoring. Down 3-1 at halftime, the Magic Cats showed their determination and true grit. Justin Soluri sent a missile into the net on a direct kick to make it 3-2. With time running out, Dan Aruch playing agressive soccer pushed the ball into the net to tie the game at three and sent us into the semifinals. Another outstanding performance in defense by Peter Zappulla and Steve Stallone, Chris Sigmund and Patrick Carter. Some questionable calls by the referee when it appeared the goalie caught the ball when he was clearly out of the box. The boys could not penetrate a tough Blue Mountain defense and again were hampered by some questionable calls by the referee. Great midfield play by Mike Makowensky and Evan Chen. The boys earned medals for their efforts and are to be commended for giving 100 percent on the field and never giving up. Coaches Tom Carton, Paul Chen and Rocco Imbriano want to thank the parents and their families for their cooperation and support in making this a memorable weekend of soccer and good times. New Hyde Park started slowly but turned it on in the second half. Fine goal by Ken Z. on a penalty shot. Kyle R. cemented the victory with a beautiful goal on a fine assist by Conrad T. Superb all around play by Paul H., Kyle S., Mark R., and Joe G. The boys completely dominated this game. Andrew H. was outstanding in goal. Goals were scored by Ken Z (2), Joe V (1), and Ryan S (1). Assists were by Kyle S., Conrad T., and Ryan S. Fine all around play by Patrick D., Jake A., Johnny C., and James O. Against a Division 3 team the Cougars took charge throughout the whole second half and just missed the winning goal on two scoring opportunities in the last minute. Nice unassisted goal by Ken Z. Good all around effort by Jessy W., Brian C., Ryan S. and Kyle R. The Cougars battled against a tough Bay Shore team but couldn't get past their defense. It was one of those games where the team did not play as consistently as in the prior games. The Cougars played a great game against a team which had dominated in all their prior games. Fine goals by Ryan S. (2) and Ken Z. Great defense by Kyle S. and Kyle R. All the boys played hard in this game and the team came away with third place trophies. The weekend was a good experience for the Cougars in their first tournament play. Thanks to all the parents for their support and enthusiasm. Alexis Davis and Aileen McGonigle excelled in goal for the Coyotes. Jaime Bernardo and Michelle Gasperaitti led the offense. Terrific defense by Christine Cuesta and Mary Delaney. Caroline Smolenski (3), Alison Grammas and Brittany Rogers scored for the Spice Girls. Great defense by Kim Brooks and Lauren Glasheen. Brandi Lacertosa was super in goal. Olivia, Emily and Jessica led the Soccer Stealer defense. The offense was paled by Christina, Melissa and Jacqueline. Coleen Kennedy and Kathleen Nicolello were divine in goal for the Angels.
