As we start our 12th season, our ranks keep growing. We would like to welcome our two new members, Joe Ferraro and Mary Kay Leibman. They both jumped right in as if they had been here for years.
The junior game saw some early season mistakes. The red team's goal was scored on a long distance blast from Billy Russo. Unfortunately, it was just seconds after Eric Schwemmer was taken from his goal keeping position (after posting a shutout) to try to add some offensive punch and was replaced by one of the coaches (a somewhat questionable substitution?). The yellow team had trouble mounting an attack but a lucky turn of events evened the score. A swarm of players, led by Vinny Oppedisano, charged the goal and, after what seemed like a hundred shots, one found its way into the net to tie the game. The red team had a terrific effort by Samantha Epstein, Eugene Simmons and Lucas Epstein.
The seniors appeared a bit rusty after their winter layoff. However, Robert DeTrano and Stefani Egre were in mid-season form as they sparked their team's attack. Melissa Bauer and Curt Walline provided some tenacious support at midfield.
Featured Assistant: This week we'd like to congratulate five of our coaches who spent last weekend attending a special soccer coaching course. This invaluable experience will only benefit our program with their enhanced training and certification. They are: Ray Andersen, Mary Jo Bursig, Matt Bursig, Bob Eilbott and Greg Walunas. Thanks again for your time and effort to attend this most worthwhile class.
The Lady Leopards leapt into the league winning column with a 6-1 victory over Bayside. The workmanlike effort featured a balanced offense and scrimping defense. Cathy Caballero scored first to ignite the attack. Katherine Hock headed in a corner kick by Alison Papalexis for the second goal. Lauren Lidowsky closed out the first half scoring when she drilled in a direct kick from 30 meters out. In the second half, Lauren Spota's hard ground shot took a fortuitous bounce for the fourth goal. A momentary lapse in defensive intensity allowed the Dynamite to score. The Leopards bared their claws again when Hock took the ball in and beat the charging goalkeeper. Lidowsky closed out the scoring when she drilled in a shot from 20 meters out. Laura Sasso and Diane Buccella turned in solid performances.
The Cyber Cats satisfied a long hunger by picking up an elusive win against longtime adversary Newfield Lightning today. Aggressive offensive play dominated the game as Corinne Tisei peppered the field with quick key plays and Nicole Lippolis sewed up the sideline from wing to keep the pressure on the Lightning keeper and defense. Still scoreless well into the second half, Vicky Parente set up the play from a wide throw in to Lindsay Martin who fed the ball up to Kim Costanzo for her signature sure shot into the net. Late in the game, concentration lapses allowed Newfield a direct penalty shot on goal, but keeper Helen Zelman denied them the opportunity with a terrific grab. Another mistake gave Newfield the ball and they worked it downfield to get off a shot to tie the score with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation time. In overtime, the Cats displayed all nine lives by bumping, bruising and sliding to win all 50-50 balls and sending the Lightning into a tailspin. No nonsense defense by Lauren DeSimone and Carolyn Durniak turned back any attack. Marissa Affronti, threatening all day, picked up a rolling ball at the field and drove it home for the go ahead score of 2-1. Stefanie Santoli wore down the defense with her skillful speed and drew a penalty from frustrated defenders. Kim took advantage of the awarded ball to line it through several defenders and into the net for a final score of 3-1.
In an iron-woman effort, the Lady Leopards defeated Village of the Branch 1-0. The win placed the Cats in the second round of State Cup play. In the first half, the Killer Bees went on the offensive. Only an outstanding defensive effort kept them from scoring. The effort was orchestrated by Kim Krakauer and featured tenacious play by Katie Sakowich and Andrea Hiebler. Michelle Colletti made two incredible saves to keep VOB off the board. On the offensive end, opportunities were limited. However, the Leopards cashed in when Jennifer Capasso took a pass from Patti Leahy and drilled it into the net from 20 meters out. In the second half, VOB continued their assault on goal. Once again, the Lady Leopard defensive contingent, led by Lauren Lidowsky, dug in and kept the Killer Bees at bay. In the midfield, Lauren Spota and Samantha Didrickson were exceptional in leading the counter attack.
The Pantherettes started this game knowing that Bayside was a more than admirable adversary. Bayside jumped ahead quickly scoring a goal on a penalty kick. Going into halftime down one goal, the girls knew that they would have to regroup and take charge of this game, and that they did! Looking like a completely different team than the first half, with crisp passing and teamwork, they took charge. Starting our scoring was Diana with a perfect left-footed volley that the goalie never saw coming. Following was Jessica, with her speed and tenacity driving to the net ricocheting the ball off the post. Jackie weaved in and out of Bayside's defense popping one over the goalie's head. Jackie netted her second goal off a very impressive bicycle kick. Our midfielders, Lauren Corcita, Maureen and Jeanne were outstanding with their two-way playing, tireless in their attempts to break up Bayside's plays, winning balls on the ground and in the air. Super game by Jeanine and Laura whose hard work created many scoring opportunities, their tenacity and aggressiveness kept Bayside's players constantly guessing which move they would make next. Our defensive trio of Danielle, Prachee and TerriAnn once again did their job thwarting many of Bayside's scoring opportunities. Nicole chalked up another win in goal with outstanding goaltending throughout the game.
The Aristocats continued Saturday's classy play right into Sunday's State Cup game against the tough Division I Oceanside Twisters. Oceanside drilled in a long blast to take the lead, and our girls were a little on their heels early on. Halfway through the first half, the Aristocats picked up their play. Midfielders Ashley Felcon, Alicia DeMarco and Jennifer Fabian took control of the center of the field, and kept the attack going. Suzie Jozkowski used her speed and strength to score a beautiful goal, tying the game at the half. These cats went roaring out after the second half whistle, stepping up their aggressiveness. Diana Cotilletta stepped up to center midfield and drove the ball into the net for the go-ahead goal. Defensive backs Alison Luby, Paige Darby and Alyson Bader had spectacular games, completely frustrating the Oceanside attack. The Aristocats had one more gear to switch into, as Melissa Fulgenzi used her speed, and ball savvy to drive down the right side and score twice to clinch the victory. Lauren Marra contributed a beautiful assist on one of those goals, and was solid in her midfield play. Danielle Losonci capably defended the net for both halves. Without her play, the team's ultimate victory would have been in jeopardy. Playing 11 v. 11 for the first time, on a full sized field, and with no subs, today's efforts and accomplishments leave us wowed. Congratulations girls, on a super weekend: Two Cup games victories against tough Division I teams.
The Lady Jaguars opening game in the State Cup was a convincing 4-1 victory over Rockville Centre. Heather Burkey's solo rush in the opening minute she blasted in to put us up 1-0. Heather's perfect corner found Meghan Pate who put it in under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead. Leah Cartier's one touch goal again from a fine pass from Heather gave us a 3-0 lead. Stefanie Weitzel, Elizabeth Montreuil and Kristin Fricane won all loose balls in our end. Lauren Baumann's pass to Heather Burkey allowed Heather to notch her second goal of the game to increase our lead to 4-0. Amanda DiJanic, Jennifer Spota, Maria Concilio and Alyssa Friedman dominated the midfield play.
On a blustery day, where the throw-ins were plentiful, the Lady Cougars edged out the Massapequa Meteors 1-0. Forwards Allie Bressio, Andrea Flori, Kim Carini and Stefanie Kovacic put the pressure on with some fine play. The defensive trio of Caitlin Kennedy, Dena Wlodarczyk and Nicole Dobranski held off the Meteors' attack. Midfielders Alison Kiernan, Nicole DeNara and Teresa Ferraro led the offense effectively all game. The game ended in a 0-0 tie forcing two 10 minute overtimes. With 2 1/2 minutes to go in the second overtime, Kim Carini scored the lone goal. Her rebound shot was set up off a perfectly executed give-n-go play from Stefanie Kovacic and Teresa Ferraro. Goalie Samantha Laszlo continues to wow the crowd with her clutch saves in the net. Good luck girls in the next round.
Once again an "undermanned" Snow Leopards team showed up for the State Cup game and was sent home with a disappointing 5-3 loss to Longwood; but the score was not indicative of the effort put out by the girls. Longwood erupted for three quick goals in the first 10 minutes and it appeared that it was over. The girls hung tough and played some of their best soccer. Tanya Brescia tallied for the first score with sheer determination. Sabrina Caronna answered with a well placed penalty shot to cut the lead to 3-2 by the half. The defensive line of Lisa Gulino, Monika Junker, Elizabeth Pujdak and Jessica Lewandoski were solid in stopping the Longwood attack. Katie Snell, Teri Zebrowski and Rosemary McHugh were brilliant at midfield and established the tempo for the game. Ai Fujii was electrifying on the wing and Cynthia Rossi blistered an outside shot for the tying goal. Laurie Anne Oates made many spectacular plays to keep the game close. However, the injuries mounted and the girls had to play "short" on the field. A direct kick and a header gave Longwood the edge they needed in the closing minutes of the game. Special thanks to the injured players for the "gutsy" play and to the entire team for their superb performance under adverse conditions.
Against a tough Division 1 opponent, the StrayCats gave a strong performance, coming up on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat. The first half was a defensive battle as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie. Despite a relentless Eagles attack, keeper Vicki Nikic kept the Eagles off the board. Ashley Campson stepped it up a notch, keeping the attack away from the front of the net. Beth DeMarco showed her customary poise coming out of the backfield to bat the ball to our midfield. Alyson Rose and Lauren Castilla provided strong play in the middle of the field. Scoreless after the first half, the StrayCats were playing for the victory. Alison Fliegel moved up to forward and coupled with the play of Xania Saldana and Eileen Hunt, managed to apply some offensive pressure. The play of Nicole Southern was the story of the half as she saved two goals which passed right in front of the net and applied the heat deep in the Eagles end. Despite a strong effort by all the girls the Scoring Eagles finished on top. Even though we lost the game, this should show all the StrayCats we can compete against the best.
Thundercats kept pressure on first half Colleen, Analise, Cindy, Sara, and Becky kept pushing offense. Ali Antman with outstanding goalkeeping kept the first half to a 1-0 score. Sam, Cindy L., Jenna, Lindsay provided excellent defense. Tara gave her all in goal second half. Good game, Thundercats.
The Lady Starcats were eliminated from State Cup competition when they were shut out in a one sided game against a superior Division 4 Merrick team. Our girls were simply outmatched and outplayed. Despite the result, strong efforts were displayed by Erin Gilmartin, Kaitlyn Kennedy, Samantha Rosen and Chiara Imbriano. Meaghan Houst and Deanna Perniciaro pounded out tremendous goal kicks. Samantha Kunion and Nisha Ohri both played valiantly in goal. Girls, don't be discouraged by this loss. Let's work hard in practice and get ready for our first league game on April 18 against Baldwin.
This cup victory over Zafiro a Cosmopolitan League team, helped the Alleycats shed those winter blues. In the first drive, forward Mike Milillo caught Zafiro by surprise with a quick move to the goal and score. Dan Rosenberg tallied the second goal for the Cats when he dazzled his opponents with some fancy footwork. With a two goal lead the Alleycats settled down to perform without haste, moved the ball well and set up another scoring opportunity. Danny Verbanac answered the call and scored #3. These scoring opportunities were made possible by the supporting cast of defenders and midfielders; the likes of Danny Korman, John Dunlop, David Cantor, Stephen Lind and Frankie Crello. It appears some referees make obvious strides to even the score and favor the underdogs. Zafiro was awarded a penalty shot but failed to score against J.P. Smolenski. Justice prevails. In the second half, the Alleycats continued to dominate and score one more as Robert Trasolini kicked the perfect corner for Dan Verbanac to head in. Bobby Thomson played well in goal this half although it is a new position to him.
In our opening State Cup game, both teams came out determined to win! The Strykercats were down 1-0 at the end of the first half against the wind. In the second half, within opening minutes, the Strykercats came back to tie it up with a goal by Neal Morris on a fine lead pass from Chris Viviano. Our midfield play was controlled by Thomas, Adam, Matt P., Enrique and James. Our winning goal came late in the game with an unassisted goal by Matt Santalesa which he made under great pressure. Our defense, Joe, Plejandro, Justin, and Selan were awesome and kept us in this close contest. Tommy Corey had an outstanding day in goal. With our first exciting win behind us we look forward to our next game and hope for continued success!
The East Northport Pythons played tough, but the Bengals prevailed. First half, great passing made by Chris Lang and Tommy Jelcic kept the Pythons chasing. Not far into the half, Matt Dellabonta soloed. Defense by John Moffa and Ryan Leung was terrific. Second goal put in by Robby Russell assisted by Matt D. After the Pythons scored one, the Bengals came back with a goal by Fernando Gualatuna assisted by Ian Ciesla to take control 3-1. Second half, Ryan Campson had some long shots that just missed. Tommy Heller was outstanding all game, but put in the final goal with help from Ian. But it was Pete Zimmerman who made sure East Northport fell short making our goaltender's (Chris Sawicki) job a little easier, for once! Let's keep up the winning - toward the State Cup.
Another great effort by our boys who never gave up. The only goal was scored by Kenny Z. Two minutes into the first OT. Again, Kyle R, Kyle S., Joe G. and Mark R. played great defense. Kenny Z., Jonathan C., Joe V., Jesse W., and Patric played good midfield. Conrad T. had some good runs on offense.
The Magic Cats came out shooting for our first State Cup game. Pasquale Imbriano had a hat trick and Michael Makowenskyj popped the other one in. Great defense by Chris Sigmund, Patrick Carton, Mike Nathen and John Fini. Good midfield support by Evan and Scott Chen.
A very physical squad from E.I. along with the cold weather and poor field conditions did not allow the Pumas to develop their game.
Although the score was so lop-sided, the same does not reflect what truly happened. A few defensive errors cost our girls three goals in the first half...However, in the second they got into striking distance when Maria reduced the deficit in the early stages. A couple of bad decisions by the official inside E.I. penalty area and three or four missed chances disabled the girls from turning the game around. The opponents with two late goals reduced the Pumas hopes to ashes.
Good defensive efforts by Ro, Tracie and Christy while Liz and Puja tried to spark the offense.
Good battle girls, but more concentration and movement needed urgently! Let's do it!
The whole team played great against a very physical Auburndale team. Andrew M., who played in goal for Patric D., had a terrific game. Kenny Z., Jake A., Jonathan C. played great in midfield. Kyle S., Kyle R., Mark R., Paul M. and Joe G. played tough on defense. Kenny Z. and Jonathan C. won the game for Cougars in the penalty shootout!
The Magic Cats played a great team game to advance to the quarter finals in the Waldbaum's Cup. The first goal was scored when Chris Garcin launched a kick in front of the net and on a great following by Pasquale Imbriano we took the lead 1-0. Elmont playing aggressively came right back to even the score at 1. The Magic Cats came right back to take the lead when Dan Aruch placed the ball perfectly into the net off a nice corner kick from Pasquale. Justin Soluri, using his speed and determined spirit, evaded the charging opponent and netted our third goal. Pasquale Imbriano also displayed his moves and quickness in scoring our fourth goal. Great midfield play by Mike Makowenskyj and Stephen Stallone and super hustle by Dan Fini. Some aggressive goaltending by Matt Bender kept us in this game. Keep it up guys!
The Stormcats met their match in the Commack Wild Ponies. In overtime the Stormcats lost 3-2 to end their Waldbaum's Cup chances. Joe Marranno and Christian Uy scored.
The Cyber Cats lost sight of the game at hand and were eliminated from the Waldbaum's Cup by longtime rival Massapequa Hot Shots. Precise passing and use of the entire field allowed the Hot Shots to scramble team confidence and outscore the Cats 2-0 in the first half. In a second half marked with yellow cards and verbal warnings against both teams, the Cyber Cats put together a better game with more shots on goal and great hustle at the net by Megan Stevens and Christine Zenzerovic. Kathleen Flaherty added savvy midfield support and Karen Trebing provided a punch from her fullback position. Efforts by sweeper Kara Tloczkowski and stopper Genna Himmelstein kept the ball in Cyber Cat control, but the lone goal was scored on a penalty shot from outside the 18 meter area by Kim Costanzo.
The Aristocats began their quest for a repeat Waldbaum's Cup title with an outstanding effort against the defending State Cup Champs, the E. Islip Strikers. Knowing that only their best would get the job done today, each Aristocat responded with intensity and desire. Our girls carried the play early on with midfielders Alicia DeMarco, and Ashley Felcon stepping in to control the ball and send it forward. Our score in the first half came on a long ball which Suzie Jozkowski sped to and pushed through a crowd of defenders to an open Melissa Fulgenzi who drove it home for the goal. Early in the second half, Melissa Fulgenzi drilled an angled shot which rebounded off the keeper's hands to a charging Diana Cotilletta who coolly placed the ball in the net. Outstanding play by marking backs Paige Darby and Alison Luby denied all E. Islip scoring opportunities. Once again, Danielle Losonci was the star in net for both halves, earning the shutout for the team. On a chilly, grey day the Aristocats lit up the field with a superb team effort, earning them a victory against a quality opponent.
The StrayCats advanced to the quarter finals of the Waldbaum's Challenge with a convincing 3 to 0 win against an opponent we had never defeated. Capitalizing on the wind in the first half the ladies jumped to a two goal lead. Alison Fliegel's two corner kicks were the story of the half. Her first kick sailed to the front of the net as stopper Vjosa Isein placed herself in excellent position and scored the game winner. Alison's next kick was even better than her first, bouncing right in front of the goal. This time right wing Xania Saldana got the job done as she headed the ball perfectly past the goalie. Mary Hess, Michele Galante, Kristina DiCostanzo and Michelle Petzold played up front and deprived the Strikers offense of the ball. Now with the wind in favor of the Strikers it was all defense for the StrayCats. Keeper Vicki Nikic was flawless in goal. Her steady play and take charge approach earned the shutout. Once again, Ashley Campson, Nicole Southern and Beth DeMarco formed a steel curtain completely shutting down Wantagh. Halfback Lindsay Rella's second half play contributed to the day. Despite a strong wind in her face, forward Jessica Busardo left no doubt of the game's outcome with the third goal of the day.
They took the field looking very sluggish and one step off the ball. It was the tireless efforts of our defensive team of Jeanine, Danielle, Prachee and TerriAnn, that held RVC to only a one goal lead at halftime.
With a regrouping the girls came back on the field in their usual aggressive style. Tying up the game was Jessica with a beautiful shot on goal popping the ball over RVC's goalie's head. Diana quickly followed driving to the net putting the ball past the goalie's outstretched hands. A frustrated RVC player fouled, giving us a penalty kick. Stepping up was TerriAnn whose powerful shot completely had the goalie guessing the wrong way.
Midfielder Jeanne and Vikki and Laura were relentless in their attempts to win the ball and move up field. Stepping up and out of her usual field position to play goal was Maureen, who impressed us all with her quick hands, making some remarkable saves. The team would like to wish Kristen a speedy reovery - we miss you!
In a rare home-and-home series, the Firecats advanced to the next round of both cup challanges by identical scores. Keeper Molly Herrick showed her mettle and set the tone of the first game by ranging to all parts of the box to stifle the East Meadow attack. Mary McFarland and Maura Tuohey played with strength and poise on the back line. The team's ball control attack was in full force all afternoon. Mid-way through the first half, Eleni Roulis sent Stacy Scianablo in alone on the Diamond keeper with a picture perfect through pass. Staci buried the shot to give the Firecats the halftime lead. In the gathering darkness of the second half, the Firecats continued to play smart, controlled soccer. Melissa Suarez clinched the victory with a slick shot past the sprawling keeper.
In the rematch, playing the first half against a wind so fierce the birds were flying backwards, the Firecats could barely get the ball out of their own end. However, outstanding defensive play by sweeper Jen Mason and fullback Jen Baumann kept the Firecats out of difficulty. The Firecats returned the favor in the second half. Led by Lauren Ratafia's full-throttle runs down the wing, they bottled up East Meadow, causing their tiring defense to foul. Midway through the period, the Firecats debuted a nifty set up for Michelle Prizeman on an indirect kick from about 25 yards. Michelle fired an arcing, curving thing of beauty into the top corner. Late in the game, Christine Maulion, whose solid midfield play and long throw-ins kept the Diamonds off balance throughout the half, launched a huge throw into the box. The fullback could not handle the ball, which was stolen by Staci, who found the back of the net to close out the scoring and a long but highly satisfying weekend.
After a hard fought defeat, the Ladies went down to V.S. ready to ensure a spot in the Waldbaum's Cup semi-finals.
From the beginning, our girls pressed the opponent into their half and it was no surprise that Evelin opened up the score by the 18th minute.
With Lori and Alex setting up the game's tempo, Carolyn's speed produced a handfull of unconverted scoring chances. By mid-second period, previous day efforts started taking a toll on our girls and V.S. got the equalizer on a questionable penalty kick.
On a late attempt, Meghan and Sarah were instrumental eroding V.S.'s tenacious defense, with Jessica's support.
And OT came and with it Maria's perfect cross that Ali finished for the winning goal.
Allison was nearly perfect in goal.
A precious win girls! More work and further victories are sure in our future!
The Cheshire Cats split a pair of tournament games this weekend. A very physical Cold Spring Harbor overwhelmed the Cats despite some excellent individual play. Stephanie Chan, Lisa Virzera, Athena Chen and Sarah Mahan played outstanding defense to prevent an even more lopsided score.
Fortunately, the girls rebounded nicely the next day to get in the winning track again. Michelle Cohen rose to the challenge of keeper by stopping several hard and bouncing shots. Kara Beardsley fought off a stiff defensive challenge at the 18-yard line to net the gamewinner. Laura Carey had set her up with a beautiful centering pass. Jenna Bresso applied strong offensive pressure from the other wing and dropped back later to provide equally strong midfield play. Jamie Cantwell led several late charges to get the ball out of our zone when the wind and the Sachem team seemed to have us trapped. Congratulations to the girls for their hard play in both games.
Ann Marie McHale scored for the Diamonds with offensive help from Angela Verdirame and Nicole Link. Tough defense from Samantha Cheung and Melanie Tiongson. Alyssa Tagios was great in goal. Nicole Daly and Jessica Egne each scored a pair of goals for the Panthers. Dolores Yonino and Erica Siciliano were great in goal. Solid all around play by Christina Falco, Kaitlyn Rogers and Samantha Fullis.

Alexandra Flori and Clare Adams were outstanding in goal for the Falcons. Excellent all around play by Sarah Moutrane, Kelsey Brown and Hope Shild. Deanna Cannella scored a goal.

Deena Pravete and Stephanie Zornberg were outstanding in goal. The Spice Girls were led by the goalkeeping of Caroline Smolenski and Brittany Rogers. Great defense by Lauren Braun and Rebecca Quezada. Allison Grammas scored a goal.
The Sparklers got great goalkeeping from Shaina Stern and Katelyn Sheridan. Strong defense by Stacey Wood, Dina Nicastro and Nicole Acquafredda. Alexa Lofaro and Julia Albanese led the offense. The Angels offensive charge was led by Danielle Restivo and Angela Chioffi while Diana Losi and Hannah Edwards provided the defensive power. Kathleen Nicolello and Jennifer Fazzolari played terrific.
Brittany, Alexis, Nicole and Aileen led the Coyote attack. Sharp defense by Christine and Mahree. Mary and Jamie excelled in goal. Jacklyn Masci led the Coyotes with a goal. Erica Southern led the defense with support from Amy Kalwiss, Susan Mason, Jennifer Fox, Lauren Zubovic and Nicole Puma.

Another strong effort by the Thunder. Brijen Patel was tremendous on defense and keeper. Andre Burnett was a driving force on offense. Great goaltending by Andrew Arenth. Good defense by Ryu Kawana, Dylan Mayer, Desi Farrell. Midfield strong with John McNichol, who had a goal along with Mark Hermano and two by Anthony Mauro. Good team play.
