Afro-Centric Program at Long Island Children's Museum

Kwanzaa Celebration at New Calderone Cinema
Dr. Maulena Karenga, creator of Kwanzaa, will join the African American Museum's annual Kwanzaa celebration at noon at the New Calderone Cinema, 145 North Franklin Street, Hemsptead. The ceremony will include a candlelighting ceremony presided over by Dr. Karenga, poetry readings, traditional music and dance, an Afro-centric fashion show, special children's presentation by the children of Terrace Avenue and a show and sale by the Black Crafters' Association. Artwork from a recent children's stamp design contest sponsored by the Hempstead post office will be on exhibit at the African American Museum from Dec. 27 to Jan. 11. The Kwanzaa celebration is co-sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Recreation and Parks, Division of Museum Services; the U.S. Postal Service, the New Calderone Cinema Management and the African American Heritage Association. Hofstra Gray Wig Presents Jesus Christ Superstar
The Gray Wig, Hofstra University's Alumni Repertory Theater, presents the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber Tony Award winning musical Jesus Christ Superstar at 8 p.m. Appearing in the production will be Brad Barth, of the Herricks community, who is also the editor of the Syosset/Jericho Tribune, an Anton Community newspaper. The show will also be featured on Jan. 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 at 8 p.m. and on 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. in the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, South Campus. The Patterns of Quilts
At the Long Island Children's Museum, 550 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, children will learn the secrets of designing a quilt. They will then create a paper coverlet of Long Island's Revolutionary Period by using traditional patterns and shapes and learn about contemporary ones as well at the museum's stART pattern exhibit. Winter Antique Show and Sale
The Department of Student Activities of C. W. Post College of Long Island University will present its Winter Antique Show and Sale in the Hillwood Commons Building at C. W. Post Campus. Mineola Choral Winter Concert
The Mineola Choral Society will kick off its Golden Anniversary musical season with its Annual Winter Concert to be held at St. Aidan's Church at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Martha Regelmann, the concert will perform Gounod's St. Cecilia's Mass, the patron saint of music and Britten's Ceremony of Carols, songs of joy and mirth of the people, with orchestra and featured soloists. Dances of the American Revolution
The Debra Weiss Dance Company will perform at the Long Island Children's Museum at 2 p.m. The dance company will perform the lively allemande from George Washington's youth and the graceful minuet, a court dance which was a favorite of Washington's. The children will then learn an old Dutch dancing game called Seven Steps and have an opportunity to join in the President's March. Big Grey Concerts
Big Grey Concerts will present Scottish folksinger Ed Miller with a concert opening performance, at 8 p.m., from Scottish small piper, Deborah Nuse. The concert will be held at the Searing/Roslyn United Methodist Church at 134 I. U. Willets Road. To honor the Scottish month of pride and celebration Ed Miller, who hails from Edinburgh, will sing a variety of tunes from whimsical children's ditties to strong songs of Scottish nationalism. Miller not only gives a thoroughly enjoyable performance, but an education into the ebbs and tides of Scottish life. General admission is $10, with $8 for seniors and $4 for children under 12.
