Coach's Classic/East v. West

East 3 - West 1

In an effort to find out just how "easy" the game of soccer is, the coaches of the East challenged the coaches from the West in a "winner take all" match this past weekend. The East was led by captain Sean McGonigle and player/coach Desi "World Cup" Farrell. The West brought in "select" coaches Sonia Tempone and Gerry Kassoff for guidance and inspiration.

The first half was a close fought defensive battle. Keepers Dominic Marrano for the West and Bob Morici for the East kept it a scoreless tie at the half, both making tremendous saves. Marrano was quoted earlier saying, "But Coach...I only play center forward." The East defense was led by Ray Anderson, Larry Spota and Jim "All-World" Hanna. The West defense was led by Cormac O'Sullivan, Tony Perico and Gerry "The Wall" Howard. Vito Pucci and Bob Kassoff controlled the mid-field for the West. Jack Levine, Ray Schacor and John Ricardi were relentless for the East. James Flaherty, Joe Tempone and Ed Uy made some great passes, but could not find the net for the West.

The East finally broke through, 30 seconds into the second half, with game MVP Oscar Salguero scoring the first leg of his "hat trick." The West struck back quickly with Frank Rutigliano setting up his Dad, Tony Rutigliano, for a picture-perfect goal. Luigi Muto, on a bum ankle, John Palazzo and Luigi Muto II were awesome for the West, but this day belonged to Oscar Salguero and the Eastern "All Stars." Thanks to all the coaches, Moms, Dads and kids for making this a special game and a fun day for all - we had a lot of laughs. Thank you, ref Chris Siracusa, for calling a close game.

What did we learn? Soccer is not an easy game and our kids really do play their hearts out, each and every week. Also, we need oxygen tanks for the coaches instead of juice and oranges! To everyone - have a healthy and happy holiday season!
