Toys of the Colonial Child

The Long Island Children's Museum will help children create the toys and playthings of children who lived more than 200 years ago. The games will include Ball-in-the Cup, Tops, Buzzers. Holiday Pet Photos to Benefit Ronald McDonald House

The Mineola Animal Center, 44A Jericho Turnpike, Mineola, is sponsoring its 4th Annual Holiday Fundraiser on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House, located in New Hyde Park. The center will hold a Holiday Pet Photo Session on Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photos of pets themselves, with a family member or with Santa, will be taken at no charge. However, a $12 donation is requested to benefit Ronald McDonald House, a non-profit organization which serves as a home-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill children being treated at area hospitals. Folk Songs of Colonial America

Long Island Children's Museum, 550 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, will present a program of Colonial American folk songs and stories for children and adults performed by George Gaines Swanson. Children will try the banjo and play the spoons, an old American folk instrument. Performances at 1 and 3 p.m. In conjunction with Newday's "Long Island: Our Story, the Colonists." Dried Flower Workshop

A dried flower workshop will be held at Old Westbury Gardens from 10 a.m. to noon in the employees meeting room. A chance to create an 18 inch Christmas tree made from fresh-cut greens and flowers harvested from the gardens. The expert volunteers who create the unique arrangements which are so popular in the Holiday Gift Shop will instruct. Fee for members is $35 and for non-members $40. Pre-registration is required. Babysitting Course at American Red Cross

The American Red Cross, Nassau County, 264 Old Country Road, Mineola, will offer a babysitting course from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $25 per student which includes the babysitting guide. Plus passing students receive a three year ARC Babysitter Certification and a baby sitter's lapel pin. Minimum age to register is 12 years old. New Hyde Park Village Tree Lighting Ceremony

The New Hyde Park Village will hold its Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Marcus Christ Hall, corner of New Hyde Park Road and Jericho Turnpike. Prior to the tree lighting ceremony, State Bank of Long Island will sponsor Mark and Kym magicians who will delight the children with their bag of magical tricks. Irish American Christmas Fair

The Irish American Society of Nassau/Suffolk/Queens will sponsor a Christmas Fair at the Irish American Center, 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola. Times are: Dec. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m.; Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be Irish entertainment Saturday evening after the fair. Shop Ireland-USA will be the theme of the fair. It will be an ideal way of doing Christmas shopping. Twenty Irish vendors will sell an assortment of china, jewelry, hand knit sweaters, albums, casettes and Irish food products including Christmas cakes, plum puddings and bracks. The Herricks R.E.A.P. (Retired Educational Activities & Programs for men and women 55 and over) will host "The High School Show Choir" with Nina Pfeffer, director. The shop at Clark Botanic Garden is hosting a Holiday Boutique between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. It will also be held on Dec. 11, 12 and 13. Clark House will be decorated for the holidays by several floral designers and will feature gift items for the garden and home, live plants, silk and dried flowers and holiday items. Town To Hold Star Application Help Day

North Hempstead Town Supervisor May Newburger and Receiver of Taxes Ann Galante have announced a Star Application Help Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Receiver of Taxes Office, 200 Plandome Road, Manhasset. Staff members will be available to provide information and to help seniors complete their applications. Seniors must have necessary paperwork and copy of their deed, proof of age and residency and all 1996 earning statements.
