News

The unusually heavy rain, after a summer of draught, caused havoc and extreme damage to homes, especially on Allen Street in the Herricks section of New Hyde Park.

Allen Street, located right behind the Denton Avenue School, off Hillside Avenue, was particularly struck by the excessive rain as one house basement was so  flooded that it resulted in the side of the house caving in compromising the structure of the entire house, causing it to be evacuated.

Further, almost 100 residents of the block had to be evacuated,  due to a gas main that ruptured. However, once the electrical equipment was deemed safe and the gas lines repaired, some of the residents were allowed back into their homes, but others, were not.

The Red Cross was on the scene making sure that all the displaced persons would be cared for and would have a place to stay until they are allowed back into their homes.

The homeowner of the home, with the caved in basement, said they moved into just four months ago and had stored all their possessions in boxes in the basement, bringing them up as they unpacked them. He said as a result, they have lost everything.

Garden City Park firefighters and the Nassau County police were called into action as they received many calls from auto owners trapped in their cars due to the excessive flooding because of  the sudden excessive rainstorm.

At the last New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board meeting, the board presented an outline of what is proposed in the $8.5 million capital projects plan, from monies in the capital reserve fund built up by the district over the years, and not to cost district taxpayers any monies, to be voted on by residents on Oct. 12 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Manor Oaks School, 1950 Hillside Avenue, New Hyde Park.

Superintendent Robert Katulak then presented the proposed plan identified by the architect and the building principals as necessary for the maintenance of the buildings and to address problematic needs.  He then explained the difference between maintenance and problematic needs.

Sports

Thanks to coach Joe Renta, the Merillon Girls 12U Sharks had a great summer playing in the Williamsport Tournament, Floral Park Tournament as well as the “First Annual Merillon Softball Classic” held at our facility. Renta said, “I wish to thank the entire team and parents for a job well done and showing tremendous support throughout the summer. I also want to thank Pat Rossello for helping me out during the summer, running the team and making my job easier. All of the players showed great ability and I am so proud of them. In fact we even had a “triple play” during one of the tournaments which is a remarkable accomplishment. The Merillon AA is proud of the girls program and we are hoping we can get more girls to play softball with us. Merillon AA is committed to the girls program, and I thank them for that. May everybody enjoy the rest of the summer and I will see you next year.”

The NY Mets are honoring the NHPLL Girls Minors Eastern Regional Champs on Monday, Sept. 13th before their 7 p.m. game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at CitiField.  NHPLL would like to have a nice turnout from our league at this game to support the girls and celebrate our league. All are welcome.

The NHPLL girls will be on the field for batting practice and hopefully may be on the diamond vision too. The girls will be wearing their uniforms, medals, and will carry their championship banners and trophy, and will hopefully be interacting with some players also if all goes well.
