Long Island community members are invited to join New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) for the annual Walk with Us to Cure Lupus program. The walk will be held on Saturday, June 12, at NYIT’s campus in Old Westbury.
Participants can walk individually or form a team with family, friends, or co-workers to help raise funds for lupus research. All donations made to the ALR, the world’s largest charitable fund for lupus research, and every dollar raised through the walk will go directly to support lupus research programs. Lupus, which affects people of all ages, is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system turns against the body’s own cells and tissues, causing inflammation and tissue damage. Lupus can cause life-threatening damage to major organs such as the kidneys, lungs, heart, and central nervous system. Despite the fact that more than 1.4 million Americans have lupus, there is no cure, and there has not been a new treatment available in more than 50 years.
“We are excited to welcome the Alliance for Lupus Research to the Old Westbury Campus of NYIT,” said Clyde Doughty, Jr., director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation at NYIT. “We applaud the determination and devotion of all individuals who get out and walk to bring awareness to the fight to cure lupus.”
