The St Ignatius Cardinals’ 15U fall baseball season is soon approaching, and is scheduled to start on Sunday, Sept. 11.
To honor this day, and to remember those who were lost as well as those who survived and persevered, we will be conducting a short ceremony prior to the start of the game. We have invited some local dignitaries, as well as some local active and retired members of the FDNY and police departments. After the game, which will be a single nine-inning wood bat game – real baseball – there is planned a picnic with our Cardinal family and our honored guests.
Organizers are very pleased that Thomas Orlando has agreed to honor our team and throw out the first pitch – representing not only Hicksville, but his father and the FDNY. Thomas’s father, Tommy, was a genuine 9/11 hero. While he survived that day, the community lost him suddenly and tragically three years ago this December. Many of the players are Thomas’ friends, and many were coached by Tommy, so this should make for a memorable, albeit emotional, day.
An invite is extended for each of you and your families down to Giese Park. The day is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
“As Americans, New Yorkers and Long Islanders, we somehow find the strength to turn tragedy and sadness into something good and pure, too find some semblance of happiness and togetherness out of an anniversary marred by tragedy. It is what sets us apart, and makes us special,” said a representative from the Cardinals.
