Seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11, so that residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some town beaches will open for weekends.

“So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Joseph Pinto said.  “Town residents, who purchase a town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.”

 

Golf Course To Be Named In Honor Of Colby

On Saturday, May 18, the Town of Oyster Bay will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years. He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public service in 1992. The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury.

“When the sign for Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is unveiled, it will celebrate an outstanding career in public service,” Supervisor John Venditto said. “Joseph Colby has always had the needs of the public as his top priority and has been widely respected for his innovation and responsiveness. This golf course will now forever bear his name as a tribute to his outstanding legacy.”

 

Zumba Fitness Fundraiser

On May 5, Relay for Life of Hicksville is holding a Zumba Fitness Fundraiser to raise money for the Relay for Life event on June 8 in Cantiague Park. Relay for Life is a walk-a-thon hosted by the American Cancer Society in an effort to raise awareness about cancer, remember those who have perished and celebrate those who have overcome the disease.

Certified Zumba Instructor Cathy Cromer, along with Elyse Davidson, Joanne Pergola and Joy Kohn, will be leading this Latin-infused, high-energy dance fitness class to raise money for Relay for Life and to celebrate Cinco de Mayo — Zumba style. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the class begins at 6:45 p.m. at Hicksville Athletic Center located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville.

 

Triathlon Clinic On May 16

Little League Opening Day

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano joined members of the Mets, Pirates, Cardinals, Dodgers and Athletics teams to celebrate Hicksville Little League’s Opening Day on April 13. Also in attendance were Town Supervisor John Venditto, Legislator Rose Walker, Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Senator Carl Marcellino, Judge Rhonda Fisher, Town Councilman Tony Macagnone, and Town Councilman Joe Pinto.

 

 

Junior Triathlon Training Program

Youngsters ages 8 through 13 are cordially invited to participate in a Youth Training Program for budding triathletes.           

The program is being organized by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the auspices of the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department.

The program will start with a training seminar in early June. Following the seminar, there will be a series of eight weekend sessions to be held each Saturday afternoon 4 to 6 p.m., beginning on June 29 and running through Aug. 17. All sessions will be held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay and consist of instruction of all three elements of the triathlon – swimming, biking and running.

 

Basketball Teams Compete In State Tourney

Long Island Lutheran’s Girls’ Basketball team captured first place in the State Federation Tournament of Champions Class “A” Finals held this weekend in Albany. Facing Troy, the girls’ team pulled off a 62-45 victory. Securing a first place finish in this year’s tournament was the goal for this team all season long and capped off a great season in their new division. Tournament MVP award honors went to Lauren “Boogie” Brozoski. Additionally, Katie Lavelle and Staci Barrett received All Tournament honors.

LuHi’s Boys Crusaders outscored their opponent in the semifinal round and won against Abraham Lincoln 73-55. In the Class AA Federation Title game, the Crusaders battled back from an early deficit to trail Christ the King 38-35 at halftime. Unfortunately they came up short and the Royals went on to claim the title 73-64. Despite the loss, they placed in USA Today’s “Best of the Rest” category.

Kentan Facey received All Tournament honors and Mical-Ryan Boyd received the Sportsmanship Award.

Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey is pleased to announce that New York State Park golf courses on Long Island are opening for the season. Contact information for regional State Parks golf courses are listed below. Changes in weather may impact operating schedules. Golfers are advised to call ahead if there is a question about course conditions.

Bethpage, Farmingdale – The Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow Courses are open. The Black Course is anticipated to open April 13, weather dependent. 516-249-0700.

Friday Night Ice Skating Special

A Friday Night Skate Special will be held at the ice rink at Cantiague Park at 480 West John Street in Hicksville beginning Friday, April 12, and continuing through Friday, May 31 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Michell Fulfills Wrestling Dream

Kevin Michell, a seventh-grader from Hicksville Middle School who has cerebral palsy, showed tremendous bravery on March 20, as he accomplished his long-time dream of wrestling competitively.

Michell spent the winter season as team manager for the Hicksville Meteors middle school boys wrestling squad, but his desire to compete led him to the opportunity of a lifetime in the season finale, as Hickville’s coaching staff granted him the chance to hit the mat for the very first time. He competed in the stacked 134-pound weight class, squaring off against Nick Wolff, a tough opponent from the East Meadow Jets.
