Long Island Fury Remains Unbeaten

Amanda Rooney, of Hicksville, scored in the first half and Gina DiMartino, of Massapequa, added an insurance goal late in the match to lead the Long Island Fury to a 2-0 victory over FC LVU Lady Sonic in a Women’s Premier Soccer League match at New York Tech recently.

The win boosted the Fury to 3-0 and nine points and into a tie with BuxMont Torch FC for the Tri State Division lead. Lady Sonic (six), which hails from the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, fell to 2-2.

 

Hicksville Hotshotz Win GU11 Cup

On June 8 at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview, Gary Sullivan, who played for both the Rough Riders and Rapids a decade ago, coached the Hicksville Hotshotz to the Girls-Under-11 (GU11), Small Sided, Arch Capital Group Cup. The game for Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) supremacy was played 8 vs. 8 and they blanked another Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) team, the Sachem Speed, 5-0.

Five players—Kiera Haggerty, Kayleigh Goodrich, Julia Aronov, Kenar Gelmand and Kerry Pearson—scored for Hicksville.

“This is a group of girls that loves the game,” commented Coach Sullivan. “I have never coached a group that loves soccer as much as this. They are very competitive, even with one another in training.”

 

Outlaws Defeat Lynbrook/East Rockaway United

Two goals by John Rojas and one by Nick Pepi gave the Hicksville Outlaws all the goals they needed to win the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association’s Boys-Under-13 Arch Capital Group Cup. Hicksville defeated another Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) team, Lynbrook/East Rockaway United, 3-1, in the championship game on June 8 at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview.

“We were very aggressive, very hungry and we have a great defense,” said Hicksville coach Mario Cirigliano.

Lynbrook/East Rockaway received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the game officials. Now retired, the remarkable Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

 

Town Honors Military With Baseball Showdown

America’s pastime gets the local treatment as Town of Oyster Bay officials announced Massapequa’s John J. Burns Town Park will host a special baseball game between the U.S. Military All-Stars and the Long Island Force High School All-Star team on Tuesday, June 25 at 8 p.m.

The teams will play for the 2013 Supervisor’s Trophy and honor the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform to protect the country.

 

Wildcats Triumphant In State Cup Tournament

The Girls U10 Wildcats soccer team prevailed on June 2 in the Eastern New York Upper 90 State Cup Tournament.  The tournament commenced on Mother’s Day, with the Wildcats traveling to White Plains and culminated in an early morning finals played at Stringham Park, upstate, in LaGrange.

In the final game, the Wildcats held the lead through both halves and emerged victorious in the month long tournament. The Wildcats would like to thank their coaches for all of their hard work and dedication. Follow the Levittown Wildcats on Facebook.

 

Hicksville Runners Score In Belmont Run

Award winners Jill Loveland and Anne Broderick led a large contingent of runners from Hicksville who successfully completed the 2nd annual Belmont Stakes Blue Ribbon 5K Run for Prostate Cancer on June 2.

Loveland was the first woman in the 25-29 age group to cross the finish line with a time of 23 minutes, 19 seconds. Broderick scored in 26:15 to earn the first place award in the women’s 45-49 age group.

The Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament has returned. This tournament consists of a six-player division and a four-player division. All six-player division games will take place on Saturday, July 13 and all four-player division games will take place on Sunday, July 14.

Hicksville Runners Score In RunNassau Race

Congratulations to Hicksville runners Jill Loveland and Mary-Jo DePaoli, both taking home awards from the Jonas Chiropractic RunNassau Series Race # 4 at Eisenhower Park recently.

DePaoli took first place honors in the women’s 35-39 age group, crossing the finish line of this four-mile run in 30:30, a pace of 7:38 per mile. Loveland scored in second place in the women’s 25-29 group with a time of 29:51.

Tommy O Memorial 5k Run

On Saturday, June 15, the FDNY is sponsoring the fifth annual Tommy O Memorial 5k run/ walk. This event honors the memory of Tommy Orlando, a NYC firefighter, who died tragically on Dec. 4, 2008. Tommy was a community activist and very involved in youth sports in Hicksville. He was a Holy Family CYO coach and board member.

The race will be held at Wantagh Park, rain or shine. On site registration begins at 10 am and the race will start at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $30 for adults and $10 for children 16 and under. Make checks payable to Engine 65 and in the memo line show Tommy O.
