10K Run for Aspire March 27

Runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes of all ages and levels of ability are invited to the H.B. Mattlin Middle School in Plainview on Saturday, March 27 for the 33rd Annual Nationwide Insurance 10 Kilometer Run for ASPIRE, Long Island’s oldest continuously held 10K run.


Certification Classes for HS Football Officials Offered

The Long Island Association of Football Officials is seeking individuals to become certified Nassau County High School Football Officials. Classes begin at 7 p.m. Monday, March 1 in the Bethpage High School Mini Theater. The first class will be an orientation class.

The fee of $150 includes books, papers, practice exams, the state exam and certification, 2010 dues, door prizes and miscellaneous giveaways.

Local Youth Hockey Teams Compete in Lighthouse International Tournament

Runners Edge, GLIRC to Host Winter Fun Run February 28

Runners of all ages and levels of ability are invited to join in the fun at the annual Runner’s Edge Winter Fun Run on Sunday morning, Feb. 28.  The run, which is being co-hosted by the Runner’s Edge and the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) with Runner’s Edge CEO Bob Cook and GLIRC Fun Run Chair Sam Zinn sharing the event director’s chores, will start and finish in the Municipal Parking Lot in back of the Runner’s Edge, 242 Main Street in Farmingdale. The starting horn will go off at 9 a.m.

Picnic reservations for the coming season may be made at Nassau County parks beginning Monday, Feb. 1. Reservations can be made for the following parks:

• Christopher Morley Park: 571-8113

• Cow Meadow Park: 571-8685 – during winter, reservations taken at Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park.

• Grant Park: 571-7821

• Inwood Park: 571-7894 – reservations taken at North Woodmere Park.

Reservations must be made in person at park locations, and a valid Leisure Pass and appropriate payment (fees depend upon group size) must be presented to obtain a confirmed reservation. Payment can be made by cash, check (made out to “Treasurer of Nassau County”) or credit card (at some locations). “Rain-or-shine” shelter areas are available at Cedar Creek Park, Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park, Nickerson Beach Park and Wantagh Park.

County regulations require that 75 percent of all picnic participants be Nassau County residents. A special permit is required for the use of alcoholic beverages, and this permit must be purchased at least one week in advance of any reserved or unreserved picnic.

To make catering arrangements, patrons must contact the park concessionaire, Dover Caterers, at 933-4444, ext. 12 or 16. Picnic reservations must be secured from the individual park before catering can be arranged.


St. Ignatius Loyola’s Flag Football Winners

The sixth, seventh and eighth grade physical education classes at St. Ignatius Loyola School recently concluded their flag football unit. All of the students learned the basic skills of football and competed in games during their physical education classes.  


Caumsett State Park to Host Annual Runs This March

The Mountain Ultra Trail Council of USA Track & Field has designated the Caumsett State Park 50 Kilometer Run to once again be the USA Track & Field National Championship 50K Run for 2010.The 50K run will take place at Caumsett on Sunday, March 7. The accompanying 25K run will serve as the 25K Championship for USATF’s Long Island Association.
