Local Residents Shine at Recent Event

Chris Mammone of the Bellmore Striders missed this year’s Kings Park 15 Kilometer Run earlier in March in order to compete in the USATF 15K Championship in Jacksonville, but he came home in plenty of time to score a convincing victory in the March 27 33rd annual Nationwide 10K Run for ASPIRE through the streets of Plainview and Old Bethpage. Chris’s 21:31 finish brought him home 18 seconds in front of runner-up Aaron Robertson of upstate Rouses Point, with Mike Petrina of the Sayville Running Company scoring in third place OA. Top Master was Paul Murphy.

The Cantiague Park Senior Men’s Golf League had a beautiful day to start its golf season. After all the rain and high winds from last week, it was good to be out there on a sunny day. They had 35 golfers and the scores were about average, some good and some not so good.

Town Hockey Championship to Be Held At New Rink in Bethpage March 24

The Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor’s Cup Ice Hockey Championship game will be held at the Town’s new state-of-the-art rink in Bethpage on the evening of Wednesday, March 24. The title game, which will feature the top two Town of Oyster Bay high school ice hockey teams, will start at 7:45 p.m.

“The Town is proud to host this outstanding event,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Venditto said. “The sport of hockey is extremely popular on Long Island and local residents will have a unique opportunity to see some of the area’s best young hockey players competing at a very high level.”


Holy Family CYO Announces Tommy Orlando Memorial Scholarship

 Holy Family CYO has created a scholarship fund to honor the memory of Tommy Orlando, who died tragically in December 2008. Tommy was a longtime coach at Holy Family CYO and also coached youth sports for several other organizations in Hicksville. Applications are now available for the 23rd anniversary Runner’s Edge - Town of Oyster Bay Triathlon, Long Island’s largest triathlon, and perhaps the most athlete-friendly multisport event in the country. Approximately 1,500 athletes representing 12 States participated in the 2009 edition of the Tri, and an equally big turnout is expected for 2010.

The date is Sunday, Aug. 29, the place is Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, and the distances are a ½ Mile swim in Oyster Bay Harbor, a 15 Kilometer bike through Oyster Bay Cove and Laurel Hollow, and a 5 Kilometer run up to the Planting Fields Arboretum, and back to the exciting finish at Roosevelt Park. This is an event that is perfect for first-timers, but yet is challenging enough to satisfy the veteran triathlete.

The event began in the auditorium, where Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics, Driver Education and Recreation Mr. Matthew Calarco shared some impressive statistics about the winter student-athletes.
