Athletes, Celebrities Golf For Good

The Second Annual Big Daddy Celebrity Golf Classic Honorees’ Evening Cocktail Party will be held on Monday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Oheka Castle in Huntington, hosted by Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado of New Hyde Park. This year’s honorees are Scott Rechler, chairman and CEO of RXR Realty and Michael Strahan, FOX NFL Sunday and co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael. Tommy O Memorial 5k Run

On Saturday, June 15, the FDNY is sponsoring the fifth annual Tommy O Memorial 5k run/ walk. This event honors the memory of Tommy Orlando, a NYC firefighter, who died tragically on Dec. 4, 2008. Tommy was a community activist and very involved in youth sports in Hicksville. He was a Holy Family CYO coach and board member.

The race will be held at Wantagh Park, rain or shine. On site registration begins at 10 am and the race will start at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $30 for adults and $10 for children 16 and under. Make checks payable to Engine 65 and in the memo line show Tommy O.

Hicksville residents honored by tennis association

The U.S. Tennis Association Long Island Region has recognized several Hicksville residents for their tennis playing or volunteering achievements. The group was honored at the USTA Long Island Region’s 23rd Annual Awards Dinner, which recognizes superior efforts both on and off the tennis court.

Terry Fontana received the Vitas Gerulaitis for the Love of Tennis award. She has been a longtime fixture in the Hicksville tennis community and is the driving force behind the Hicksville Community Tennis Association (CTA), which, since 1995, has been promoting the development of tennis as a means of healthy recreation and physical fitness and to create a community resource for physical activity throughout the area.

It was a cold season for softball this year, colder than usual. Anyone who knows the sport recognizes that the weather can be changeable, but this softball season was fraught with snow, pouring rain, cancelled games, frigid temperatures, and blowing winds that would cause any team to crave the warmth of indoors.

That wasn’t the case with the Hicksville High School Lady Comets Varsity Softball team. They played through it all like champions, and endured the rough weather like superstars.

Seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11, so that residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some town beaches will open for weekends.

“So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Joseph Pinto said.  “Town residents, who purchase a town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.”


Golf Course To Be Named In Honor Of Colby

On Saturday, May 18, the Town of Oyster Bay will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years. He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public service in 1992. The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury.

“When the sign for Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is unveiled, it will celebrate an outstanding career in public service,” Supervisor John Venditto said. “Joseph Colby has always had the needs of the public as his top priority and has been widely respected for his innovation and responsiveness. This golf course will now forever bear his name as a tribute to his outstanding legacy.”


Zumba Fitness Fundraiser

On May 5, Relay for Life of Hicksville is holding a Zumba Fitness Fundraiser to raise money for the Relay for Life event on June 8 in Cantiague Park. Relay for Life is a walk-a-thon hosted by the American Cancer Society in an effort to raise awareness about cancer, remember those who have perished and celebrate those who have overcome the disease.

Certified Zumba Instructor Cathy Cromer, along with Elyse Davidson, Joanne Pergola and Joy Kohn, will be leading this Latin-infused, high-energy dance fitness class to raise money for Relay for Life and to celebrate Cinco de Mayo — Zumba style. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the class begins at 6:45 p.m. at Hicksville Athletic Center located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville.

Also in attendance were Town Supervisor John Venditto, Legislator Rose Walker, Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Senator Carl Marcellino, Judge Rhonda Fisher, Town Councilman Tony Macagnone, and Town Councilman Joe Pinto.
