Friday Night Ice Skating Special

A Friday Night Skate Special will be held at the ice rink at Cantiague Park at 480 West John Street in Hicksville beginning Friday, April 12, and continuing through Friday, May 31 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Free skates will also be available on a first come first serve basis. Michell Fulfills Wrestling Dream

Kevin Michell, a seventh-grader from Hicksville Middle School who has cerebral palsy, showed tremendous bravery on March 20, as he accomplished his long-time dream of wrestling competitively.

Michell spent the winter season as team manager for the Hicksville Meteors middle school boys wrestling squad, but his desire to compete led him to the opportunity of a lifetime in the season finale, as Hickville’s coaching staff granted him the chance to hit the mat for the very first time. He competed in the stacked 134-pound weight class, squaring off against Nick Wolff, a tough opponent from the East Meadow Jets.

 

Long Island Marathon May 3-5

The Long Island Marathon Weekend will be held May 3-5. The event has grown to include a full and half marathon, 10K, 5K, 1-mile run, and Kids Fun Run.  The festivities begin on Friday, May 3 at 3: p.m. with a vendor expo at Mitchel Athletic Complex, followed by the Main Event “Carbohydration” Pasta Party at 6:30 p.m. courtesy of the Main Event Restaurant and Sports Bar. The races begin on Saturday, May 4, with the 1-mile run starting at 8 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, the 5K will commence at 8:30 a.m. Both the 1-mile and the 5K races start on Charles Lindbergh Blvd. and finish at Mitchel Athletic Complex.  The last race of the day, The Kids Fun Run, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Mitchel track. On Sunday, May 5th, the marathon, half marathon and 10K will take place. All participants will assemble at the starting line on Charles Lindbergh Blvd. for an 8 a.m. start.  

 

Stroller Strides

Stroller Strides meets Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays through April 13, by the new soft play area by Panera Bread at 10 a.m. for a one-hour class throughout Broadway Mall. Try a free class on April 10.

Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes power walking and intervals of strength and body toning exercises using exercise tubing, the stroller and the environment. Society Golf Outing

Hicksville’s Our Lady of Mercy Holy Name Society, 12th Annual Golf Outing will take place on Tuesday, May 28 at the Town of Oyster Bay Course in Woodbury. Palmiero-Winters Is A Woman Of Distinction

Amy Palmiero-Winters of Hicksville has been named among the eight Town of Oyster Bay residents as one of this year’s Women of Distinction.

Palmiero-Winters is the founder of Amy’s One Step Ahead Foundation, an organization focused on helping children with physical disabilities build self-esteem and self-confidence through athletics. Her work with children to help teach them independence and responsibility, as well as how to handle challenges. Palmiero-Winters shares her love of volunteering with the children and mentors them to be role models for other children facing similar difficulties.

 

Kickline Makes History

The Hicksville Middle School Kickline team coached by Katelyn Heuser competed in the hip-hop category for the first time, placing both second and third in the Scholastic Kickline Competition. The team competed amongst nationally ranked teams in hip-hop, Pom, and Kick.

 

Annual Family Skate Night

Town officials and members of the town’s youth hockey league recently welcomed New York All-Time Great Ron Greschner to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Family Skate Night and Awards Ceremony held at the ice skating center in Bethpage. The event wrapped up the Town of Oyster Bay’s youth hockey season and provides the opportunity to thank the coaches and families for their support of the program.

Ron Greschner played in the National Hockey League for 16 seasons (all with the Rangers). He scored 179 goals and 431 assists for 610 points. Greschner’s best offensive season was 1977–78, when he scored 24 goals and 48 assists for 72 points.

The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (ucpn) Ninth Annual “Polar Bear Plunge” benefit fundraiser was held recently at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. The day’s event featured brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for ucpn and its many outstanding programs and services. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto has served as an Honorary Co-Chairman for the event since its inception.

 

Keith Cromwell, Cream Of The Crop

Hicksville native Keith Cromwell ended his lacrosse career as the leading scorer in Rutgers University history and on March 1, Cromwell’s legacy was cemented as he was named to the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame.

“I never imagined something like this, being inducted into the Long Island Hall of Fame after growing up here in Hicksville. It was a humbling experience,” said Cromwell, who moved back to Hicksville in 2006.
