Letter: Is the Internet Safe for Children?

I was very sad to read about the recent suicide of a teenage girl due to Internet bullying. I wonder how can people be so cruel? Unfortunately, there are many cruel people in the world who get their kicks by hurting others. Or, they may have mental illness.

The Internet is a wonderful place, but you do have to be careful. I find that I keep my distance from message boards as there are way too many creepy people there. I had posted some things on the Red Hat Society Queens Message board and I was attacked by a group of about 12 women. The Red Hat Society assumed that I was the villain as 12 women could never be wrong compared to one.

One place where I have found a lot of nice people is Facebook. But even here there is the occasional bad apple. A simple removal of the person usually solves the problem.

I have had a few stalkers and midnight attack home calls. But since I have stopped posting on the message board, this has stopped.

Parents always need to be spies when it comes to their children. It is not wrong. It is just a precautionary thing. You can find anything on the Internet. And, I mean anything. One of these is porn, which you certainly don’t want your kids to see.

The Internet is a magic place to find information, connect with friends, buy, sell, etc. I could never live without all the Internet has to offer. But even an old lady like me needs to be careful.

The Internet is not a replacement for real life. Make sure your kids don’t spend all their time on the Internet. It is not healthy. Make sure they have plenty of real life friends and are involved in sports and clubs.
