Janet Ann Palmese (nee Terrell), of Hicksville, died on Nov. 12, 2010.
Janet was a lifelong resident of Hicksville and graduated from Hicksville High in 1952. She was the beloved wife of the late Carmen and is survived by her five children: Daniel (Madeline) Kerhonkson, NY, Gary (Irene) of Hicksville, Karen Grappone (Paul) Hillsborough, NJ, Edward (Lanjo) of Hicksville and Thomas (Carmela) of Merrick. Loving nana to her seven grandchildren: Laura, Mary Ellen, John, Christina, Nicholas, Marina and Francesca and grandnana to Audri, Liam and Evelyn.
The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, Hicksville Chapel. Mass at Our Lady of Mercy RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity in Janet’s memory would be appreciated.
Henry (Hank) E. Frey, of Hicksville, 76, passed away on Oct. 6, 2010. Hank graduated from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He then worked for Sperry (later Unisys) in Great Neck as an electrical engineer. When the union organized he became a union steward. Hank liked his job of helping people and providing information and support.
After Hank retired he worked part time for his son Russ’ computer business. He continued as a volunteer to Unisys retirees with such things as medical questions. Hank loved going to the Y in Plainview.
Jean Christ Loken died peacefully on July 17, 2010. Jean was born on Feb 8, 1945 to Ingrid and John Christ. She attended the Hicksville schools graduating in 1962, graduated from Wagner College, Staten Island, and received a master’s in library science from Columbia University. She worked as a reference librarian at the Dakota County Libraries in Minnesota. In 1995, Jean made medical history by becoming the first Minnesotan to receive a Left Ventricular Assist Device after a massive heart attack, which sustained her for three months until she received a heart transplant. Jean was very active in transplant support groups and organ procurement organizations.
She was an avid quilter, winning prizes at both the county and state level and quilted for many charities. Recently, until her death, Jean devotedly served as the Minnesota coordinator of the Home of the Brave Quilt Project. This project honors families of fallen Minnesota soldiers who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with a handmade Civil War reproduction quilt.
Jean is survived by her husband Steven; children, Robert and Diana; two grandchildren, her mother, Ingrid Christ Middleton of New Market, VA; sisters, Dorothy Lagerroos of Grand View, WI, and Sue Brown of Equinunk, PA; brothers, Rick Christ of New Market, VA, and Jerry Christ of Fitchburg, MA . Nancy Kostel-Donlon, 52, a lifelong Queens and Long Island native, passed away on Sept. 17, 2010 from a ruptured brain aneurysm. Born on July 10, 1958, she had just celebrated her 30th anniversary as a nurse, educator and mentor. She spent her entire professional life helping to save countless lives and her last official act was to donate her organs so that others may live, see and fight diseases like cancer and diabetes. Her most recent accomplishment was helping to a establish a stroke treatment center at the world renowned St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn.
In addition to the countless hours spent at St. Francis, she and her family are tireless fundraisers for NSSA – Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism. They have two children, Alex 16 and Brianna 13. Her son Alex was diagnosed with autism when he was 18 months old. She has made his treatment a very personal cause.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Donlon, a retired NYC transit policeman. He spent countless hours at Ground Zero immediately after the attack on 9/11 aiding in the search and recovery. Today he works for EDEN II and runs two group homes on Long Island for young adults with Autism. He is also the president of the Holy Family CYO and coaches several teams. She is also survived by her brothers, Andy and Mike, and her sister Faith, all lifelong New Yorkers.
Robert M. Schmelzle, of Hicksville, passed away peacefully, on Aug. 26, 2010. Beloved husband of Wilma. Devoted father of Peter Marion, Robert S. Schmelzle, Susan J. Salmon (Eddie), Janet Schmelzle, Thms Marion (Margaret), Timothy Marion (Kris), Kathy Fischer (Kenneth), Kathy Yuill (Gil). Adored grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of two. Walter Eskil, 81, of Hicksville, passed away surrounded by his loving family on July 17, 2010. Beloved husband of 51 years to Millie. Loving father of Donna and Denise Jackson (Ivan). Cherished grandfather of Dana and Scott Jackson. His beautiful smile and great sense of humor will never be forgotten. He proudly served in the army during the Korean War. Retired NYPD mounted unit.

John Philip Martarello, 73, former resident of Hicksville, lately of Lima, OH, passed away on June 28, 2010.
Former husband of Anna (nee Pavlicek). Father of John III and Tina Wallace. Grandfather of eight. Great-grandfather of three. Beloved of Barbara Sellers. Brother of Rosie, Janet, Joey and the late Mary and Angelo. He was a graduate of Hicksville High School Class of 1954. He was retired from a lifetime of trucking and was NYS Truck Rodeo 5 Axel Champion 1968, 69, 70.
