Mildred Norma Krahn, 86, of Hicksville, died peacefully at home surrounded by family, on Aug. 16, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 63, Frederic A. Krahn; her son Rick Krahn, his wife Peggy and daughter Leann; and by her daughter Liz Rock, her husband David Rock and their children, Heather, Michael and Julianna.
She was born in 1922 in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in art history. She worked in the Milwaukee and New York public libraries.
Visitation at the Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home, 125 Old Country Rd., Hicksville, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral service Saturday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Isobel (Breit) Castoro, 93, formerly of Plainview, passed away in Hudson, FL, on Aug. 8, 2009. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her son, Carl of Hicksville and daughter Cathy Snyder of New Paltz, NY, as well as five grandchildren. Widow of Michael P. Castoro.
Isobel was “Rosie the Riveter” and the first woman to receive an “A” rating for her work in defense during WWII. She also aided in the capture of a saboteur.
Madeline D. Matschat, of Hicksville, died on Aug. 10, 2009, in her 82nd year. Wife of the late Paul L. Mother of Deborah A. Skelly (the late Jim) and Paul L. Jr. Sister of Alice Holt, George Pruett, Barbara Bell and Betty Williams. Grandmother of James, Dave and Chrissy. Aunt of many nieces and nephews and treasured friend. John C. Spadola, who was born in Hicksville, passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2009 at the age of 54. He is survived by his wife and three children and two grandchildren, his mother, his two brothers and his two sisters. He was preceded in death by his father. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Edward R. Schluter Jr., 92, of Halcottsville, NY, died on July 11, 2009 at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville, NY. He was born on July 23, 1916 in Oyster Bay, the son of Edward R. Schluter and Lillian Puvogel.

At 92, Marion “Tess” Teslik was an independent, quick-witted, working woman with a flair for fashion.
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, Ms. Teslik attended finishing school after her high school days and later enrolled at Fordham University.
She attended three years of college before meeting her husband, Alexander, Jr., while on a train traveling between New York and Connecticut. They later married and Ms. Teslik, an only child, went on to have three children, Alexander, Steven and Melanie.
