Legislator Rose Marie Walker was recently sworn in for her third term at the Nassau County Legislature.  Walker represents Legislative District 17 which includes parts of Hicksville, Bethpage, Farmingdale, Massapequa, North Massapequa, Old Bethpage, Plainedge, Plainview, Seaford, Wantagh and Westbury.

At the legislative meeting on Jan. 6, Walker was also elected to hold positions on four legislative committees. She is the Chair of the Health & Social Services Committee, Vice Chair of the Veterans and Senior Affairs committee, and a member of the Minority Affairs and Finance Committees.

Walker’s goals for this term include completing the steps necessary to fix the county tax assessment system and making government more accessible.  Legislative District 17 recently changed to include new communities, and Walker says she looking forward to getting to know her new constituents.

“I am excited about getting to know the residents, local officials, and business owners in Farmingdale, North Massapequa, Seaford and Wantagh,” said Walker. “We have many projects underway locally, including road projects in Bethpage and Hicksville, that I will continue to monitor through completion. As a caucus, we will continue to focus on Nassau’s fiscal recovery including the final fixes to the county’s property tax assessment system and fighting tax increases.”

Walker was first elected to represent the 17th district in 2009, and was then re-elected again in 2011. Prior to her election to the Legislature, Walker served as a Councilwoman in the Town of Oyster Bay from January 2004 through December 2009.  While on the Town Board, she proposed legislation to create a Veterans Service Division and expanded services and programs for seniors.

A lifelong resident of Hicksville, Walker attended both private and parochial schools.  She earned a BA in Education from Belmont Abbey/Sacred Heart College in North Carolina. Upon graduation, she worked for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, St. Stephen’s Nursery School in Hicksville, and the Hicksville Union Free School District. In addition, she has also served as a trustee on the Board of Education in Hicksville, as president of Dutch Lane PTA, Hicksville Middle School and High School PTSA and PTA Council.

She remains an active member of the community, involved in numerous civic organizations including the Hicksville Community Council and Chamber of Commerce, Order Sons of Italy Capt. Kathy Mazza Lodge, and Joseph Barry Columbiettes, and is the current President of Irish Americans in Government.
