A frigid November day was no match for the warm hearts of all those who took part in the 1st Annual Hicksville Alumni Lacrosse game, which benefited the Hicksville-based Michael Magro Foundation.
The event, which was held on Saturday, Nov. 24 on the turf field at Hicksville High School, raised more than $6,200 for the Magro’s organization dedicated to the support of children with cancer and their families.
The event featured a clinic for the Hicksville High School varsity lacrosse and a second clinic for players of all ages, which was sponsored and run by MDP Lacrosse LLC. According to Terrie Magro, vice president of The Michael Magro Foundation, the clinics were “organized, professionally run and everyone had a great time.”
Although there wasn’t much time to prepare or advertise for the fundraiser, there was still an impressive turn out, as more than 60 Hicksville alums participated in the lacrosse game. The event began with an inspiring rendition of the National Anthem that was sung by Hicksville High School senior Mary Elizabeth Assante. Hicksville’s rich tradition of lacrosse was also displayed as Vincent Hoosak (class of 1963) and Tom Campelettano (class of 1977), who posed for a ceremonial faceoff at midfield. Hoosak was a member of the first lacrosse team for Hicksville High School.
The teams were split up based upon odd or even graduating years and many players showed they still have the skills to play lacrosse at a high level. The Orange team (odd) beat the White team 9-7 in a well-played contest, which had everyone hugging at the end.
After the game, Gary Schweitzer and Teddy Marrotti, owners of Crossroads Restaurant, graciously donated a buffet for the hungry players. There were several hundred people at the restaurant where raffles and 50/50 tickets were sold. The two people who won the 50/50 drawings were kind enough to donate their winnings back to the foundation. Some of the prizes that were raffled off were a gift certificate to the Cheesecake Factory, as well as a gift certificates to Peppercorns, Mia Posto, Jericho Wines and Liquors and more. The MMF committee secured 28 raffles for the event. Starbucks of Plainview generously donated several containers for tea, hot chocolate and coffee.
Possibly the most exciting aspect of the event is that the alumni are now motivated to make this an annual occurrence. According to most participants, the event was great to help support the Michael Magro Foundation and also to have something to look forward to on the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year.
Terrie Magro is thrilled to have the new exposure for the foundation. She stated, “The lacrosse fundraiser is an event that Paul and I are thrilled to add to our annual calendar of events. It is about raising awareness for the Michael Magro Foundation, sharing our mission and helping children diagnosed with cancer and other chronic illnesses.”
Much gratitude was expressed by Terrie and Paul to all of those who assisted in this wonderful event, as well as to DJ Gem Entertainment NY and Katie Burnett Photography for donating their talents and time.
