Local teacher Walter Weil is ready to close the books after 34 years of educating students. The technology teacher from the Hicksville School District will be retiring after 14 years of teaching there. Weil was the technology teacher in both the Hicksville High School and the middle school.
His time spent at Hicksville Middle School was special to him, especially this year. “The middle school was like a family to me,” said Weil. “The people were closer and closer and nicer and nicer.” His time spent in the school district was a happy one because of how he was treated by all.
While Weil is ready for the next page of his life, he will surely miss the interaction with the students. He recalls one time when a student gave him a Christmas card and then asked if this would get him a 100 in the class. He especially loved passing on his knowledge of technology, teaching his students about electricity, which was his specialty.
Weil’s next chapter would bring him to Florida, where he will work with seniors at a local senior center conducting family interviews. Some words of wisdom Weil would want to pass on are to treat people the way you want to be treated. He has found that this has worked out well for him. He thanks the school district for the open opportunity, as he gets ready to begin his retirement.
