Here Comes Hockey Season At Cantiague

Kids of all ages are welcome to come play hockey at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, and this winter is no exception. Both shape-up sessions for those who want to get in shape for hockey season and tryout dates have been announced. The schedule, broken down by age group, is as follows:

Mites (birth years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)

Shape-Ups: March 13, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.; March 14, 6 to 7 p.m.; and March 16, 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Tryouts: March 20, 6 to 7 p.m.; March 23, 8 to 9 a.m.; and March 27, 6 to 7 p.m.

Squirts (birth years 2003, 2004)

Shape-Ups: March 12, 6 to 7 p.m.; March 14, 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.; and March 16, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tryouts: March 20, 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.; March 23, 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.; and March 27, 7:15 to 8:15 a.m.

Peewees (birth years 2001, 2002)

Shape-Ups: March 13, 7 to 8 p.m.; March 14, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.; and March 16, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Tryouts: March 18, 8 to 9:15 p.m.; March 20, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.; and March 25, 8 to 9:15 p.m.

Bantams (birth years 1999, 2000)

Shape-Up: April 7, 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.; April 13, 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.; and April 14, 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Tryouts: April 17, 8 to 9:15 p.m.; April 18, 8 to 9:15 p.m.; and April 20, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

Midget Minor (birth years 1997, 1998)

Shape-Ups: April 7, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; April 10, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.; and April 13, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. Tryouts: April 15, 8 to 9:15 p.m.; April 18, 8:15 to 9:15 p.m.; and April 20, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

All events are held at Cantiague Park, located at 480 West John Street in Hicksville. The Nassau County Hockey Program is open to Nassau County residents only, and all players/parents must have a valid Leisure Passport. The fee for each shape-up session is $25, while the tryout fee is $100, payable to “Treasurer of Nassau County” at the first tryout. All players are expected to attend all three tryouts.

Hicksville Board Outlines District Profile

Hicksville School District Superintendent Maureen Bright gave an overall picture of the district profile at the school board meeting last Wednesday night. The meeting was the final one before the upcoming budget vote, which will take place on Tuesday, May 21 at Hicksville High School from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The total number for the 2013-14 proposed budget is $124,595,008. This is a 3.29 percent increase or $3,963,375 from the 2012-13 school year. In 2012-13 the total budget was $120,631,633.

James Russo, 11, of Hicksville, came in sixth place in the States Competition at 120lbs. Ryan Schecht, 11, of Hicksville, placed third in the States at 105lbs, and is on his way to the Nationals Championship.

Beach Stickers Sale

Seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11, so that residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some town beaches will open for weekends.

“So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Joseph Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.”
