The government's new economic stimulus plan includes tax credits that will pay for 30 percent of the cost of an energy-efficient boiler and/or water heater.
One of the provisions of The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 is an energy tax credit for qualified energy efficiency improvements in the taxpayer's principal residence. It's a dollar for dollar tax credit equal to 30 percent of the investment, up to $1,500.
The tax credit is limited to certain types of boiler and/or water heaters, which the Long Island Plumbing Authority can help homeowners select.
With the ups and mostly downs of the stock market, people wonder where there's a safe place to invest their money. I don't think there's a safer place than your home and family. And the money you save heating your home is tax-free!
So it's no surprise that one of the most effective ways of reducing your energy bills is to replace an old or inefficient boiler, generally those over 15 years old. All modern boiler systems are designed to be energy efficient and need less fuel to run, with the most efficient modulating boilers using 30-40 percent less fuel.
According to the Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program, water heaters last around 13 years. Consumers with aging water heaters that could result in a home flood if the water heater starts leaking should consider replacing in advance of failure. Contact Long Island Plumbing Authority at 942-5700 or visit the company's website at www.longislandplumbing.com to schedule an appointment for a free evaluation of your existing boiler and/or water heater to determine whether replacement is necessary.
