(Editor's Note: The following letter was sent to the Hicksville Illustrated News and the Oyster Bay Town Board and read into the record at the town's Jan. 20 meeting regarding Don't Pass the Gas' request for a special use permit to operate a car wash/gas station in Hicksville. No decision was made at the meeting.)
Concerned citizens of Hicksville please close your eyes. Did you see Old Country Road and Newbridge Road - this four-way busy dangerous traffic intersection with four strip malls and four gas stations? Yes, four. Would you consider it a very dangerous four corners to i.e. disabled, school children, carriages, senior citizens, etc trying to cross over? If not, just take a ride and look.
Well, close your eyes again. On Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. the Town of Oyster Bay Planning Board [was scheduled] to decide on whether or not to allow another new gas station plus a car wash on the southwest corner of Old Country Road and Newbridge. This will be a disaster in the making if allowed.
Cars backing up on the south side of Old Country Road to enter, disrupting free flow of buses and traffic making a right onto Newbridge. Blind spots occur on the southwest. Newbridge will be an "exit" another danger [as] buses are coming across Old Country Road from the north to the bus stop slightly on the southwest side onto Newbridge - another blind spot. More obstruction of free flow traffic. Crossing here are children coming and going to Hicksville High School.
A bit forgotten is a tiny strip mall next to this site, a bit west on Old Country Road, that will certainly be affected by the blockage to their entry while cars wait on line for the car wash.
It is not often we use our privileges as residents but we certainly should more often. The town fathers must listen to you and these are the ways we must use to communicate. Attend a town board meeting. If you are unable to attend, call Supervisor John Venditto's office at 624-6373 or write Supervisor Venditto and the Planning Board, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11711. Please tell your neighbors.
