University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) freshman guard Michelle Kurowski, a resident of Hicksville, was named America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third week in a row. The award covers all games from Dec. 1-7, Dec. 8-14 and Dec. 15-21.
In two games the week of Dec. 15, Kurowski averaged 11 points, five rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. She netted 13 points against James Madison on Dec. 18, including 12 in the second half, and added five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Then, against Loyola on Dec. 21, the rookie tallied 9 points while also contributing five rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Kurowski is averaging 16.3 points per game on the season, second-best on the team and in the league. She is the first America East freshman to win three straight Rookie of the Week awards since Vermont's Courtnay Pilypaitis did it five weeks in a row (Dec. 24, 2006 to Jan. 22, 2007).
